Mr. and Mrs. Harry Morrow, of Portland, are spending a short time here with Mr. and Mrs. P. 1. Packard at the Morrow-Packard orchards. A number of I'ndcrwood people went to Hood River last Sunday to hear Billy Sunday, the noted evangelist. H. W. Hamlin went to Portland Fri day to join Dr. Geo. Whiteside on a mutor trip through Medford, Ore. W. B. Rine was a Hood Kiver visitor Wednesday of last week. Miss Ruth Cooper was the guest of Miss Hazel Holmes the latter part of last week. Mrs. S. E. V. Weber and grand daughter were in Underwood for a few hours last Thursday on their way east. Miss Katherine Hewett was in Hood Kiver (shopping Wednesday I of last week. W. G. Detwiller left for Stevenson Monday, where he will take up the position of principal of the high school. Miss Ruth Vinton, accompanied by Miss Koshoro, of Hood River, spent the week end here with Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Vinton. Miss Clara Weiss returned to Port land Friday after visiting here with Miss Gladys Lowden for the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gibbs, of Wal lace, Idaho, are enioting a vacation on their ranch here. 11. S. Adams was in Portland on bus iness for a couple of days last week. On Wednesday afternoon Mra. Slade and Mrs. Carnine entertained the Woman's club of Underwood at the beautiful home of the former, which is located on the White Salmon river at Husum. M. S. Smith accompanied a party from Hood Kiver which went on a tish ine trip in the region of Lost Lake re cently. A party of Underwood people includ ing J. W. Shipley, H addon Manners, the Lapham brothers and Mr. Bone brake, of Hood River, left last '1 hurs- day for a trip to Mount Adams. Miss Bertha Masters, of Portland, and Miss Flora Furrow, of Hood Kiver, were the guests of Miss Kuth Cooper during last week. Miss Gladys Lowden and her guest, Miss Margaret Creech, of Portland, left Sunday for Cascade Locks to join a camping party there. Geo. Hewett and H. W. Hamlin were in White Salmon Tuesday of last week. Hazel Adams is visiting her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Adams, at Cascade Locks. Sunday school was held at Valley Crest, at the home of G. W. Collins last Sunday, on account of the Under wood school house being under repair. C. B. Arisman was in Stevenson Saturday on buisnesa. J. W. Haran came up from Portland Saturday to stay over Sunday at the Sheehy-Haran ranch. A brush fire which started at the railroad track at Hood last week and spread up the bluff, threatened for a time the home of G. H. Marsh, but with the combined efforts of the neigh bors .(was soon under control. Mr. Marsh was called by phone from Port land and staid until all danger was over. At the meeting of the residents of district No. 27 Thursday afternoon it was decided to erect a school house with the funds on hand and bids will be opened in the near future. TROUT LAKE. Ed Cole is preparing to build a barn on his ten acre tract. B. C. Hamilton and F. S. Inman made a trip to White Salmon last week, Mr. Hamilton going on to Portland. J. E. Reynolds is harvesting his win ter wheat, which is rather an experi ment in this locality. It is proving very satisfactory. The Eastern Star had another of their spreads last Saturday evening, with a few outside friends. The Indians who have been in the mountains picking berries are com mencing to return to Yakima. The fair committee is kept busy an swering questions as to when, where and what. Reports from the outside indicate a large attendance. Do not forget the grange meeting next Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Pearson have been entertaining Mrs. Neppach, of Portland. Again the mowing machines are busy with the second crop of clover. A good deal of building is going on in the valley this fall. A number in the lower and are making additions and other substantial improvements. JohnJWyder, who raises only alfalfa, claims it has the advantage three to one over clover. Mr. Clover Man, take notice. Chas. Hall is clearing on the proper ty lately purchased from B. C. Hamil ton. There have been several ranches in the valley rented this past season and several inquiries for ranches to rent. This, t with several other indications, make it evident the valley is becoming better known. What we need in this valley is dairy farmers and the dairy cow. There is raised in the valley right now hay enough to keep 500 more dairy cows. That would mean $50,000 a year income to the valley. Here is a chance for the city man who belongs on the farm. He might make a success here where he is making a failure there, and bring up his children under influences and conditions that will make them gtronger mentally, physically and morally. WHITE SALMON. (From the Enterprise) The Western Klickitat Fair Associa ion held a meeting last week and de cided on October 15-16-17 as the dates for the fair to be held here this fall. C. C. Anderson, an undertaker of Hood River, recently of Spokane, was in town last week. It is understood that he will make arrangements with the White Salmon Hardware.Co. for a branch office in this city. R. R. Oldham, of Laurel, passed through town last week on his way to Hood Kiver where Mrs. Oldham is in the hospital. He expects to be there for about two weeks. Geo. Cole was second, winning a gold watch and a certificate gnud for part payment on a piano. Miss Marion Wood was third, winning a lady's gold watch. WINANS CITY Mrs. Harry Emery and sister, Mrs. Edward Coe, of Omaha, Nebr., psent a few days last week at the beach. Among those who visited Cloud Cap Inn last week were Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Wilson, Misses Frances and LaVerna and Floyd Wilson, of Winans; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Clark, of I arkdale, and Mrs. Sue Windle, of Portland, who is spending the summer with her sister, Mrs. M. A. a liar, of Summit. The party left the Wilson ranch Thursday morning at 5.30 in the Clark automo bile, arriving at the Inn about 10 o'clock. Mr. Clark says the roads are in tine condition except between the Wilson ranch and Dee. John Wirrick, of Dee, spent Saturday in Hood Kiver. Several young folks of Dee motored to Cloud Cap Inn Sunday. A most en joyable day was spent by those of the party, who were Miss Yates, Miss Er ma Yates, Nels Nelson, Richard Yates and also Chas. G. Robert's granddaugh ter, who is spending a few days in this vicinity. The proprietor of the Dee hotel has erected a 20x50 foot building which will be used in the future as an amusement hall. The new building is across the bridge on the west side of the river. Dances will be given, and it is planned moving pictures will be shown at least twice a week. Part of the building will be given for the use of a library. Dee has been in need of such a building for the past four or more years. The first dunce to be given in the new building was "last Saturday evening. Quite a crowd was present. There was music from Hood Kiver. D. L. Rowntree is building a new barn on his ranch, which he intends using for his stock. It will be an IHlxS structure. Mrs. Kowntree has just received a new cream separator from McKay & Henderson, of Odoll, and is quite pleased with it. Weather has been very cool the past week, and many of the campers are re turning home. Julian P. Scott is now in Portland vis iting friends and brother. Mr. Scott's sisters, the Misses K. and P. Scott, of St. Louis, Mo., are among the tourists of Europe, who have found difficulty in returning home. the Misses Scott were in London, Eng., when word was last received from them. Paul Winans is improving as well as can be expected. D. L. Rountree is erecting a new barn on his ranch. It is an 18 x 18 foot building and Mr. Rountree intends using it for stock only. Mrs. F. P. White and D. C. White, of Spokane, Wn., who have been visit ing the past two weeks with Mrs. White's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Emery, left this week for their home, Julian P. Scott was in Portland for a short visit with his brother, Wm. Scott and friends, last week. C. Edwards and family, of Winans, will leave this week for Estacada, Ore. Paul Winans, who was hurt quite seriously two weeks ago, is improving as well as could be expected. Miss Agnes Lane, of Portland, and Miss Weatherred, of Hillsboro, are the guests of Mrs. Edith Lnzier Weather red, of Winans. Miss Weatherred is a niece of Mrs. Weatherred. Miss LaVerra Wilson spent the week end with friends in Pine Grove. Mrs. D. L. Rountree and Miss Velma attended the meeting of the Guild in Odell, last Thursday.
