VALLEY HAS BIGGEST
CROP OF CLOVER
Never in the biitory cf tb. Hood
River valley has tucb a crop of clover
and alfalfa been seen among the trees
of the orchards. Several .yeas ago it
was the exception rather than the rule
to sea an orchard seeded witn a forage
crop. But today it is the other way
and all orcharidsts are crowing luxun
ant crops of clover. In young orchards
and in old the rank green leaves of the
healthy clover and alfalfa add an ap
pealing touch of color to the broad ex
oanae of the valley. Viewed from an
some of the districts with their differ
ent crops and sections of newly plowed
fields, present the appearance of a
crazy quilt.
And along with the increased produo
tion of forage crops bas come pigs and
cows. Driving along the highways of
the valley now, one can see droves uf
hogs lying in fence corners of clover
fields, truly pigs in clover, and but few
barnyards fail to have a cow and a
fawnlike calf.
GROWERS URGED TO
PREPARE EXHIBITS
Oregon will bo called on frequently
this fall to furnish material for eastern
land shows, Mute fairs and traveling
exhibit car. The Oregon products set
a high standard last year and took first
prizes almost everywhere. "In order
to maintain this reputation," says C.
C. Chapman, state immigration agent,
"it will be necessary that progressive
growers keep in mind the importance
of saving samples.
Mr.fChapman urges all growers who
desire to make exhibits to communi
cat. with him. ;The former policy of
labeling all products in the name of
the county and grower will be adhered
to, and credit will be justly distributed.
Capt. Cot Honored in California
Capt. H. C. Coe, one of the pioneers
of this city, who will be remembered
by all of the older residents, was re
cently elected president of the city
council of Manhattan beach, Calif., a
suburb of Los Angeles. Reporting
Capt. Coe s election, the Manhattan
beach News says:
Captain Coe's varied experience in
the business world nas nttea mm
splendidly for the office, and he is cap
able of fulfilling his duties as president
of this honorable body in a dignified
and satisfactory manner.
For many years Capt. Coe was a
river man, in charge of some of the
largest boats plying on the Columbia
river. He was one of the founders of
the Hood Kiver territory where the
famous apples grow.
For many years he has been rub
bing elbows with all kinds and classes
of people, which fact establishes his
right to understand people and to know
how to deal with numerous problems
that are a part of the commeicial lite.
Mr. Coe is an extensive property
owner near the Standard Oil property.
He owns several acres of choice land
there, and is therefore deeply interest
ed in the future of Manhattan lieaeh.
Although living, as he expresses it,
"on borrowed time," he is younger
than many men who cannot eount the
years that he can. He is energetic and
eager for advancement, qualifications
that mark him for one who will always
labor for the best interests of the
place which he calls home.

B. A. Walker Dies at Mosier
Baldwin A.Walker, familiarly known
to the people of Mosier as "Pad," died
last week at The Dalles hospital, where
he had been suffering with a complica
tion of troubles. The deceased, while
working the week before, had been
taken suddenly ill. He was 08 years of
age.

PIONEER WOMEN
HOLD A REUNION
In celebration of the seventy-seventh
birthday of Mrs. O. L. Stranahan, the
pioneer women, and a number of the
men, of Hood River valley were enter
tained last Fridav afternoon by Mrs.
Bert Stranahan, the duughter-in-law of
the guest of honor, at her home on Uak
ft reel. With big. teautiful blossoms
from her own hardline garden and
that of her neighbor, Mrs. W. r. Lara
way, Mrs. Stranahsn's home was dec
orated with a profusion of roses. Little
Miss Geraldine Softy met the guests
at the door, presenting eai'h with a
handsome rose bud.
The afternoon was si.er.t very pleas
antly by the pioneers, wIki, as they re
counted deeds and incident oi me
early period, lived over the interest
ing days of old tin es. E. L. Smith,
while lunch was beirg served, told sev
era! of his most interesting Indian
Ugends. The minds of the pioneers
were carried back to the babyhood
days of Hood River city by the place
cards, bearing representation of the
first post'office and the old Mount Hood
hotel, which were painted by lco. I
Howe. Mrs. Stranahan was , the first
appointed post mistress of Hood River,
having served for nven years.
As the pleasant afternoon drew to a
close and the guests prepared to make
their departure, a kind of solemnity
settled over the gathering, the piO'
neers forgot for a moment the events
of the past, as they bade each other
good bye, and were thinking of similar
future events, when faces of some of
those present rriday would probably
be missing. Tears stood in the eves
of the aged men and women as they
exchanged handclasps and departed for
their respective homes.
