Max Adams MeCall of Scio, '10, who has been teaching agriculture and manual training in a high school at Davenport, Wash., has been assistant in agronomy at his alma mater, succeeding Henry A. Uoyt of Garretford, Pa., who goes to the University of Arizona for similar work. E. C. Uallaway of Spokane, Wash., who got his master's degree in the pharmacy department last June, is the new city milk chemist of Portland. Hugh McCall, a former student at the eollege, has gone to the position of cashier to the Cove State Bank from the LaGrande National Bank. O. L. Lance, another O. A. C. boy is now president of a stock company for the manufacture of a newimproved railroad switch which can be operated rom the engine thus promising preven tion of many switch, wrecks and saving time and expense. John Quincy Adams, of Sheboygan, Wis , who'graduatedjast June, is man ageijund superintendent of Mackintosh Manor, Superior , Mont., a large fruit ranch, at an excellent salary. Otto El mer of Mulino, also '11, is supervisor of a 120 acre tract of fruit land at Wren with A. F. Lafky of Salem, was employed this summer on government work in pre-cooling. H. E. Walberg of Lents, and S. B, Hall of Cleone will teach agriculture in high schools at Los Angeles, Cal., and Kaymond Loosely of Ft. Klamath will do likewise at Ferndale, Cal. F. L. Griffin of Canby will be at Boise, Ida., in the same work, and Laura Hill Griffin at Payette, Ida. Cornell Students Study Packing. E. L. Markell and H. R. David, of Baltimore, Md. ; and E. C. Auchter, of Rochester, N. Y., arrived in this city last week to spend a short time making a study of Hood River's pack. All of the young men, who are stu dents at the Agricultural Department of Cornell University, have been mak ing a tour of the principal apple sec tion of the Urited States this sum mer. They visited the citrus fruit district of California and came here from Mejford, where they studied pear packing. "The Hood River pack is considered one of the best, in the Fast," said Mr. Davis, "dnd it is possible that it will be introduced to a great extent in the near future by growers for making ihe pack of their fancy fruit." FISHERMEN MUST " PRESENT LICENSES Hunting or fishine unon receiuts fur nished by Notaries and Justices of the Peace will not be allowed in the fut ure, according to instructions recently issued by State Board of fish and game Commissioners. Deputies all over the state have been told to arrest any hun ter or fisherman who fails to show a fishing or hunting license in his iioses sion, upon demand. The holder of a receipt will be treated in every way the same as though he had never made application for a license. The reason for this action is plain. In the past, Notaries and justices of the Peace, who have authority to col lect for licences, issue a receipt and mail the money to the County Clerk, who in turn mails a license to the Notary or Justice, to be delivered to the applicant, have failed to do so, pocketing the money and advising the! applicant that a receipt is equivalent to a license. To stop this petty graft ing, Game warden Finlcy insists that licenses, in the future, will be recog nized as the only evidence of a right to hunt or fish. "We have a fairly complete record of notaries and justices who have re tained money belonging to the game fund," said Warden Finley, "and they are located all over the state. These men have actually accepted money for licences and made no returns of it, nor have they secured licenses for those who have made application. By ar resting those holding merely receipts for licenses, we will shortly run down those who have been guiltv of this fraud." It is provided by law that any Jus tice of the Peace or Notary in the htate may receive money for the County Clerk on application for hunt ing or fishing licences, and the Game Warden has no disposition to place an obstacle in the way of hunters to thus easily secure their rights. He is firm, however ,in his intention to break up a practice which has proven demoraliz ing to many public and semi-public officials in all parts of Oregon. A Great advantage to Working Men. J. A. For sale by all dealers. , ' SUNDAY SERMON ' PAUL'S ADVICE Let us not therefore judie one an other any more; but judne this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Romans xiv., 13. These words of Paul, the ao8tIe, are but an excerpt from his philosophical and valuable discourse to the Romans, in one of his letters to them, in the charitableness of the judgement of one man concerning another and its repre hensible tendencies. They contain the good suggestion that every man should lend a hand of help to his neighbor in all things. Far too many people are living in the world today, who, in their zealous rush and hurry to make what they consider a great personal success in life, are too prone to pay little heed to the wel fare, yes, even to the rights of their brethren. Sometimes through thought lessness, but more often through real design, they place stumbling) blocks of nil kinds in the pathways that others must tread. Their slogan is of the "me and mine" variety regardless of what may happen to the 'other fellow. Many of the victories of life in its pursuits are won through just such methods as .these, but they are far from being desirable ones notwith standing their material features. They are bound to carry with them uneasy consciences. For, say what you will, there are always moments in the life of everyone, particularly among those who are looked upon as having been most successful, when reflection is sure to make. With it is certain to come the thoughts of those who have been ruthlessly pushed aside and tramped upon in the heedless march, often a mad one, to whatever success has been attained. These thoughts cannot help but be bitter ones and discomforting. They can be brushed aside for the one time, but they will recur again and'again, bringing with them unpleasant and dis quieting forebodings, for, as Paul says in his letter, "every one of us shall give an account of himself to God." When the rtime 'comes for the giving of these accounts there will be many who will wish that their records were more free from the disregard they have shown to others. Deacon Sagebrush. What sur prises me is that those letters come from so distant districts; today 1 re ceivedjfrom Georgia, and several from British Columbia, and not long ago, even fromJWisconsin and Rhodejlsland, which proves inai your magazine is not only distributed and read over the United States and British Columbia, but it is doing a good missionary work in advertising our Oregon." Birth Statistics for July and August. The birth statistics, taken from the books of Dr. M. F. Shaw, county health officer, and Dr. Malcolm Bron- son, city- neaun onicer, snow mat thirty one children were born in the county of Hood Riiver during the months of July and August. The sexes were almost equally divided for the two months, the books showing 16 male children and 15 girls. Births in the city numbered 15. The birth rate for the two months was a must two thirds that of the death rate. The county during the time had 11 deaths, six of which were in the city. The new cor poration will at once commence the planting Jof fruit trees, berries and ornamental trees and the entire tract will be cut up into small farms and placed upon the market. The plans of the company include the estubslish ment of a townsite and a number of other improvements will be made as soon the population will warrant. A school is now located on the property and mail is delivered to the door of the ranches. The Dalles Chronicle. Pioneer Woman Dies in California. Mrs. Anna I'entland Brooks, a pio neer woman of the state of Oregon, died Monday, September 11, in Pasa dena, California. Mrs. Brooks who came to the west in 1850 by way of the isthmus of fanama together with her mother, joined the father, Robert Pentland .who had settled a nunihnr of years' earlier at Oregon City. They later moved to Hie Dalles, where in August, 1872, the deceased 'was mar ried to Robert u. lirooks. I he journey to California was made last May, in hopes that the change of climate would benefit Mrs. lirooks health. The Line Shaft and Governor of the Body. The rspinal cord within the spinal column is the "line shaft" of the body, furnishing power to .Host ot its organs and parts. . The stimuli for these muscles arc toxins within the organism, generally within the alimentary tract. Injuries may move, or "subluxate," a vertebra to a position in which those muscles are unable in themselves to return it to its proper apposition. These involuntary muscles along the spinal column, as well as the subluxa tions i rum injuries, cause asymmetries n the position of the vertcDrae. - .
