NICIIOL, THE MAN WHO SELLS ORCHARD LAND Tbe Fruit Trade Journal and Produce newi aava that: Vice-Counaul Stephenson, of Liver pool, report j that tbe importation of fruit into Liverpool during 1910 showed a marked increase, taken aa a whole, over 1909. This increase was pnnci pally in the item of raw apples, the tizurea for 1910 being 7O0.9S4 hundred weight (English hundredweight equals 112 puundD.) valued at $2,241,933, aa compared .with 430,460 hundredweight, valued at $l,328,837,'Jnll909, saya Mr Stephenson. The following etxracts from reports concerning markets are interesting : "Aa to the method of aale of both fruit and vegetables, it would appear to be cumbersome and resulting what would seem to be a small return, Little fruit ia disposed of outright by thejeiporter to parties on the market here. The growers ;or buyers in me United States generally consign the; article for sale to'a commisson house here. The commission house puta the fruit or vegetables in the auction room, and it is sold to the highest bidder. Thesefbiddera are almost in variably jobbers, and they in turn sell to the retailera. As a consequence of this procedure, the account submitted to the shipper in the United States does not at times'show the result ex pec ted. "It has been suggested by an Ameri can shipper of fruits, after careful personal investigation of the customs and practice!of the trade in Liverpool that large growersjin theUnited States should pool their interests and send a representative to thii market, or ap point an agent'here to'receive the fruit and to sell it direct to. the retailers. In this way, it is claimed, that not only will thfTeharges of the middleman be eliminated, but that only the actual expenses incurred would be charged to the shiupers'of 'fruit. In the absence of such a pooling oi Interests, with direct represenation in this counry, the methods to get upon the market cannot be better stated than in the words of a responsible com mission merchant in this city, who says: 'We think he (the inquireir) could not do better than Bend some ex perimental shipments along small shipments to.takettheir chance on the market here and by the result, which could be 'cabled, he might determine whether it would suit him to con tinue.'
