Walter went to Portland Tuesday of last week and were visitors in that city until Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Young arrived home one day last week from several days' business stay in Portland. Wallace Young and L. A. E. Clark went to The Dalles early last week taking a number of horses to leave with a gentleman several miles out from The Dalle for wintering. Mrs. Cushman is seriously ill. She suffered from erysipelas and later blood poison threatened. We hope she may improve and eventually regain health. Mr. and Mrs. Fred McNeill left Thursday. They expected to spend a few days in Portland before going to their home at Sheridan, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Stephenson are now at home in the cottage of the Homoiei. uo., at Udell. J. H. Eggert went to Portland Wed nesday of last week, returning home Sunday. While away Mr. Eggert vis ited friends at Salem, as well as those in Portland. He also attended the Ap ple Show. C. P. Odell is very seriously ill at the hospital in Hood River where he has been for several weeks. Hope Shelley left Hood River the night of Tuesday, November 29, for Ann Arbor, Mich, where she will enter Ann Arbor Medical College. Miss Shelly has a large number of friends here who wish her all success in her chosen profession and they have reason to expect that she will attain high rank as she has done wherever placed here tofore. A school meeting has been called for Saturday, December 17, for the pur pose of levying a tax on all property real and personal within District No. C f 4- I I lit - .1 i, iui me nuppuii. biiu uenent 01 me school within said district. The meet ing will be held in the school house at 2 p. m. The valuation of sehool dis trict No. 5, according to county records, is above $1,500,000. Fred Bradley went to Portland last week. We understand he intends going to California. Mrs. L. Silliman was seriously in jured in a runaway accident recently. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jochimsen, of Estacada, Ore., have been here visit ing Mr. Jockhimsen's parents and other relatives. W. P. Kemp left Friday for Rupert, Ida., for a visit with relatives. Mayme Howard is a Portland visitor this week. O. H. Ehrck attended the Apple Show in Portland last week. Mr. and Mrs. Guy F. Smith and daughter, Josephine, and son, Francis, returned Sunday from Portland, where they attended the Apple Show and visited relatives. Mr. Smith repre sented Lawrence & Smith, who had thirteen entries and carried off nine prizes at Portland last week. Con gratulations for Lawrence & Smith and for Odell. The prizes included cash amounts varying from five to twenty-five dollars, a barrel of spray, nursery stock amounting to twenty-five uuuars ana two meaals. j How pleased we will be when some i of the roads about Odell surrender to the permanent road movement and we have reason to believe not many more winters will pass until this is true. The matter of a few dollars more tax is as naught compared to the gain financially that would result from im proved roads. There is aside from the money value, the increased personal comfort and satisfaction, resulting from such transformation that should be worthy of of consideration. An earnest sermon by Rev. Troy Shelley last Sunday morning. An in teresting C. E. meeting last Sunday evening with Marie Loekman, leader. Next Sunday evening the C E. meeting will be in charge of Miss Delia Rush. Following the C. E. meeting Rev. Crenshaw will conduct services. R. H. Waugh lost a black rain coat recently and would greatly appreciate its return to him. The attention of those interested is called to the fact that the East Fork Irrigating Co. will hold a meeting in Hood River next Saturday. OAK GROVE H. A. Cunning, A. 0. Anderson and G. A. McCurtly spent three days last week in Portland, and took in the Ad- : pie Show. j Herman Pregge, John Couchman and John Hatcheller returned last Thurs day from a wild geese hunting trip near Arlington. They brought home eighteen ot the wild towls. I James Lnmmon and J. N. McKennell I spent last week in Portland. I F. S. DeWitt left Tuesday of last week for the East to spend the winter. He will visit in St. Louis and points in Ohio before returning here in the spring. John Hakel attended the apple show in Portland last week, where he carried off first prize for Wagners. Jasper Wickham and family moved last week to Hood River for the win ter. His son, James, however, will remain on the ranch. The road leading from the Rockford store to the Shoemaker place is now in a frightful condition, which might have been averted had some one been put on the road and turned the water off the center sooner. It would be well for our County Commisioners to visit the said road and see the con dition that Jt is in, almost impassable with a load. The two children of L. E. Dart, Josie Jand Annie, have been pretty sick, but they are now somewhat improved- and trust will soon be back on their way to school. SS Ed Watts has been in the district again plastering a house for H. D. Steel on Methodist Lane. The Christian Endeavor of the Val ley Christian church met at the home of Mrs. J. J.
