Interest on Time and Savings Deposits Oscar Stranahan, 17 year old son of C. H. Stranahan, fell under O. K. & N. train No. 6 Jin The Dalles Thusday night and had his right leg so badly mangled that amputation was neces sary a short while later in the Dalles hospital. Young fctranahan, aceom nanied bv Clint Mooney, left here on the east bound train at 10:2.r. Al though the lads had money to pay their fare they beat their way on the outside of the train and it was in at tempting to get off the train near the Umatilla House that young Stranahan fell under the wheels and had his leg ground off. The limb was amputated several inches below the knee and it is probable that the boy will be able to walk again with the aid of an artificial leg. Jim Stranahan, brother of the injured boy, visited him Friday at the hopsital. He sustained no other in juries and he is not regarded as being in a serious condition. l i r. a. Will Remove Shoal. 2 After having deepened the upper en trance to the Cascade Locks suffi ciently to permit the easy passage of steamers through the channel without danger of going aground, the orange peel digger belonging in to the Govern ment and which has been employed at that point for several weeks shifted last week to the lower entrance or the locks, where she will remove the shoal formed where during the Juno rise of the Columbia. When the channel at that point has been dug to the desired depth the digger will return to the upper entrance, whore she will dt some additional work. Since going to work at the locks it is estimated that the digger has removed 10,000 cubic vards of material from the channel. The material consists almost entirely of fine sand, much of which is blown into the river from the deposits oi both banks of the Columbia. A Reliable Medicine .Not a Narcotic Get the genuine Foley's Honey and Tar in the yellow package. It is sate and effective. Contains no opiates. Refuse substitutes, bold by C. A. Plath. Sold bv all dealers. The Suffering Potato. American farmers are warned by the Department of Agriculture to watch for a new potato malady, which has developed into a plague in Europe. The "black scab" "warty" or "cauli flower ' disease, starting in Hungary in 18!Ki, has seriously infected Ireland", England, Germany, Scandinavia, France and Italy. It appeared on the North American Continent last year in Newfoundland. The keenest lookout must be kept, for where disease has taken hold no healthy tubers will de velop. So insidious is the plague that it not only renders all the soil of a held diseased, but bits of dirt clinging to the boots or implements of a farm hand may carry the pest to uninfected areas. Thereafter the ground will pro duce unsound crops for a number of years, unless an intelligent system of crop rotation is used to heal the soil. Diseased potatoes shuold invariably be burned or," if too wet to burn should be buried in a hole and covered with unslacked lime. Seed potatoes should never be taken from ailing crops, it the seed is suspected, it should be powdered with sulphur and stored away until planted. Farmers should cooperate with the Department oi Agriculture ty reporting, any ap pearance or the disease, so that it may be kept from fastening itself into American soil.
