Adv. CHAS. N. CLARKE. Marion Cook Stow, author and poet, known especially for her verse and tales of Oregon, died Friday at the home of her father, C. W. Cook, in Portland. Mrs. Stow had been ill a short time with consumption. Coming less than two years after her marriage to Charles M. Stow, of the Oregonian staff, the death of Mrs. Stow is particularly sad. She was about 35 years old and until recently had en joyed excellent health and was ex ceptionally fond of the out of doors, as was evidenced by many of her writings. Bom in Ohio, but a resident of Oregon, for 20 years, and educated in Portland, Marion Cook early beagn to describe regon scenes ana flowers in verse. One of the best known of her poems is "Where Flows Hood River", and her bound verse includes a collection entitled "Nature Sonnets" and "Voices of the City." She also wrote a book for children, "The Child and the Dream" that has been widely read. Mrs. Stow leaves her husband, her father and two brothers, W, M. Cook, cashier of the Ladd & Tilton bank, and Frank R. Cook, of the Pacific Hardware & Steel company. Funeral services were held Sunday and the remains cremated. Mrs. Stow had many friends and admirers in Hood River and she had visited here, having distant relative! Jn the valley. Bigelow, of Cincin- ati. spoke at the Pine Grove hall Sat urday evening expounding the theory and working ol tne bingie I ax. tie advocated land tax which wouWcompel the improvement of property and do away with the repeated taxation of the products of labor. Rev. Bigelow cited the system in vogue in.Vancouver, B. C., where the single tax is in opera tion and showed evidence of the greater improvements taking place in that city than in others similarly located where Improvements on land were taxed. Rev, Bigelow also spoke briefly of the political situation in Ore gon and disapproved of the assembly.! For County Commissioner.
