HOOD RXV R GLACIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1910 ADVOCATES A HIGHER SALARY Editor Glacier Some reference hav ing been made to my candidacy for the office of County Judge of Hood River County, a few plain statements may now be in order. I have been a resident of the State of Oregon for 35 years, and a resident of Hood River vulley for more than 20 years. I have property interest in Riverside Farm three miles west of town, and an equity in about CO lots in the city of Hood Kiver. I re presented Sherman and Wasco Counties in the House in 1898 and 1H99 as a Republican, during special and regular sessions of the Legislature. Several bill were introdcued by me anil some of them became laws and remain on the statue books to this day. One is for the protection of the beautiful silver gray squirrel, often Keen in the Hood Kiver valley. Also a general curative act, and the horticultrual Jaw. 1 believe a public office is a public trust, not only so, I think the laborer is worthy of his hire, and in this connection let me ask if you think the small sum of three hundred dollars per year is sufficient salary for the County Judge of Hood Kiver County, in which is located the most famous and fertile valley in the world ; where grow the finest apples and strawberries, superb almost beyond description, where orchards sell for $2000 per acre and an assessed valuation in the county of ten to twelve million dollars. Would it not seen just a little awkward if, perchance, the county seat should be located at some interior point far from the business center of the county, and the county Judge should be com pelled to strike camp in a tent and, with frying pan ever ready, cook and prepare his own meals. It is likely he would not be ablo to travel by auto to any groat extent, and quite certain he would have no extended use for the modem flying machine backed by this princely sum. In my business career, covering nearly 25 years, I have done considerable contracting, and found it wise to become familiar with the terms of the contract before entering into its performance, so I deem it proper to say in this connection, that I do Jiot feel that I could afford to give my time and energy nece..ary to meet the demands of said office, for Ichs than $1500 per year. The County Judge of Jackson County uregon, receives ifiKUO per year. Many ordinary bookkeepers receive nearly as large a sum as this for their services. I do not think it urgent to enier into a lengtny discussion of the political issues of the day. However, 1 have to say that the mere fact of holding an assembly does not const itue an unlawful act, but is in accordance and within the scope and meaning of me direct primary law of the State of Oregon. There can bo no harm in an assembly of the voters of a party or of a voluntary assembly, providing each and every member there of is allowed a free and untrammelod ex pression of his political views. Under these conditions every candi date recommended for office by a party assembly is clearly within his rights. It is just as true that every candidate for public office who is nominated by petition, is within the scope and meaning, of the direct pri mary law of our state. So far as the law is concrned, their rights, duties and privileges are on a equal footing. TBose persons . who have signed, as candidate statement No 1. have a right to the exercise of that personal privilege, but statement No. 1 has nothing to do with the office of County Judge. But very few things of any great importance, have been ac complished in this world without or ganization. Every organized body must have a leader, who, with the as sistance of his- associates is enabled to promote the welfare of mankind. I believe in patriotism of the kind that upholds, protects and defends the Con tsitution of the United States of America; I believe in progressive Republicanism, ever supporting the advance guard of modern achievment ; I believe in progress of the kind that takes on practical business application to public affairs and in a civilization that securely upholds equality and justice. I am not a candidate for the office of County Judge of Hood River County. J. W. Morton. Larsen-Probst. Mrs. Charles A. Bell received a postal card Tuesday announcing the marriage of Charles Larsen, the pop ular day clerk at the Mt. Hood hotel and Miss Grace Probst, one of the efficient waitresses of that hostelry. Mr. Larsen, who has been in Hood Kiver for the past 14 months, left last week to take his vacation going to the farm of his mother near Laurell, in Washington county. Miss Probst left about the same time for a short vaca tion and the first news of the wedding came Tuesday when the ;ard stated that they were enjoying their honey moon on the farm Miss Probst is the daughter of a well to do rancher near Centralia, Wash., and is known to the hotel patrons of Hood River. The bride and groom did not state whether they expected to return to Hood River, and Mr. and Mrs. Hell are regretting the loss of two very efficient employees.
