WESTERN APPLE CROP INCREASES ONE HALF Late reports on apple conditions show that there may be only slightly less than normal crops in those eastern states bordering the Atlantic ocean, heavy yields in the western states bordering on the Pacific ocean, and almost complete failures in the states between the coast lines of the two oceans. In a report on the western apple crop published in eastern fruit trade papers, W. N. White, a New York buyer, estimates that there will be 21,900 cars of apples in the west tnis year to 14,450 last year. He credited Oregon with 4uu cars lam year hiiu ni estimate for the coming crop in this state is 2,000 cars. He has placed the Hood River Newtown Pippin cro; at 100,000 boxes or four times as muc as last season. Mr. White draws from the large .. . ...hi i rt increase mar. mere win uu iuwci prices with the-usual scheme or logic employed by the fruit buyers. He is particularly pessimistic with regard to the winter apple market. Last year it is well known most; oi the fruit specualtors lost heavily on apples, and this year these same men have matured their plans for the com intr fruit capmaign, and as a consc ience the buyers do not care to ex press themselves on fruit prices. Their decision in this matter is to be commended. The Northwest is a great fruit district, but it is pre eminently an apple district, and the show which Spokane is trying to make an important institution will be de voted to a worthy purpose, and will be a more distinctive affair, if its mana gers stick to the apple. In time this will be the greatest apple show in the word if it is handled right. The first years of its existence it probaby will become merely one of a dozen or 20 fruit fairs.
