Phone 282L One of the unique features in con nection with the National Apple shows in Spokane, 'November 14 to 19, and in Chicago, November 28 to December 4, will be a aeries of apple packing con testa for county, state, national and in ternational championships, with suit able trophies and cash premiums to the winners. Square and diagonal packs of the various recognized tiers in reg ulation northwestern boxes will be used in single, five and 10-box con tests, open to all. It is also likely there will be a contest for teams in packing a full car or 630 boxes. There is much rivalry among packers in the several valleys in the northwest, where grading and packing has reached a de gree of perfection not yet attained elsewhere, and it is expected that many of the cracks in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and other states pos sibly Colorado and California, will en ter. Plans for the contests have not yet been worked out, but it is expect ed a full announcement will be made early in August. TIiobo Pies of lioyhood How delicious were the pies of boy hood. Where She Found Comfort. At. a prayer meeting held in the backwoods of Rhode Island, testimon ies were requested, and a very old woman tottered to her feet. "I want ter tell this blessed com pany," her voice quavered, "that i have rheumatiz in my back, and rheumatiz in my shoulders and rheumatiz in my legs, and rheumatiz in my arms, but I hev ben upheld and comforted by the beautiful Bible verse, 'Grin and bear it.' The town, which has been "dry" for three years, has returned to the "wet" column, but the man who owns all the ice in the neighborhood is a rampant Prohibitionist and has refused to allow any ice to be sold to a saloon under any circumstances. As a result the "thirsty members" of the community must either drink their beer hot or go without and hot beer is certainly not very palatable for a man who has his mouth puckered up lor a glass or the cold brew after- Three years of drought.
