Williamson, secretary of the O'f- gon st ite Board ol Agriculture to wnic-h ti e communication was referred answered as follows: "it is true that the American Pomc logical Society uses the Spitzenberg apple as the standard of excellence, so far as quality is concerned, aid rates it 10. The rating for quality given the Yellow Newtown is 9-10. This rating was given before Oregon Yellow Newtowns were known outside of the state. This rating applies solely to the quality of the flesh. "It is a strong assertion to state that any one variety of apples ranks all others if we take into considera tion, in addition to quality of flesh, color, form and keeping quality of the fruit, and health, vigor and bear ing habits of trees, and the diverse tastes of different consumers and groups ol consumers "mere is a marked difference of opinion among good judges as to the comparative merits of the Spitzenberg and Yellow Newtown in the matter of quality of flesh. Downing, one of the best authorities on fruits who has ever lived in this country, placed them on a par, to wit: "The Esopus Spitzen berg is a handsome, truly delicious apple, and is generally considered by all good iudges equal to the Newtown Pippin, and unsurpassed as a dessert fruit by any other variety." "The most valuable recent publica tion on apples is "The Apples of New Yor." In this work the quality of the flesh of the Newtown is rated "best"; that of the Spitzenberg "verv good to best". "In the United States the Spitzenbergs of the fanciest grade sell for higher prices than Newtowns of the corres ponding grade. In England the New town is preferred to all other apples sent from this country, and the Spitz enberg is not especially popular, selling there at about the same prices as Baldwin, Northern Spy and King ap ples of equal condition. The Yakima Valley will be furnished a daily fast fruit special of not to ex ceed 15 cars throughout the fruit season this year, according to. the an nouncement made by the Northern Pacific Railway. The train will leave the valley daily and be run through to St. Paul on express time. The Lvle Commercial Club held its regular monthly meeting April 12. Those present enjoyed and profited by the addresses given by V. C. Brock, the well-lknown banker and apple grower of Hood River and C. R. Greisen, of "Better Fruit." Mr. Brock spoke on "Possibilities of the Fruit Growing Business particu larly Apple Culture," showing in a very clear manner how the fruit land can be made produce a revenue of 10 per cent on a valuation of $3000. Mr. Greisen gave an interesting and graphic account of the method of packing and disposing of the Hood River apple crop, incidently throw ing out suggestions for the develop ment of new sections. Probably one of the most unique banquets ever held in the State is to be held soon by students of the Univer sity of Oregon. It is a "Know Oregon" banquet, at which none but Oregon pro ducts will be on the menu. Every commerical organization will be asked to furnish its reason why its locality is the best in the State and these rea sons will be set forh in characterisic booster speeches by prominent stu dents from various counties.
