fldOD RTVBK GLAOIER THPftSDAY, JULY i5, 1909 Three A Winner. Raymond li. Early When in the dawning days of the liltb century, tbo iutiepid explor erg, nt a'ld Clark, sailed their frail batteaux dowu tbe ntH ot tbe Colu Tbia, tbey beheld u oouutry ot virgin wilderness; majestic as tbe oeatuiy was, and uiaitii'nt as were tbe possibilities vvbieti eeeu tben could be foreseen by tin- haid band ot Argonaut, yet tbe vast scene was uutoucbed by tbe ba;d of civiliza tiun ; no sound was beaid -,u the daubing of tbe Dragon as it Bowed lbstl-8sy to the sea. Now ami tbr.n tbe call of tbe Indian hunter l.r Ui upon tbu stillness, while upon aouie distant hillside the tribal cuuipUre alone showed that buujau habitation was pieaeut. ibis was but a triQe over a hundred years ago a mere bagatele in the chronicle of time- but marvelous cbauges these few yeais brought forth. Some twenty odd miles below tbe rapids at 1 he Dalles, where these hardy explorers again embarked in their boats, tin y bebeld a scene which caused eveu their accustomed eyes to open wide in wonder at tbe beautiful spectacle pieaouted. On tbeir left, gushing f om the eternal snows at tbe toot of the grand old mountain, flowed our picturesque and uow far famed 11 od Hirer; to the south Mt. Hood raised its whitened bead in solitary magnitlcHuoe ; while to tbe north Mt. Adams looked dowu in limned splendor. Little dreamed these pioneers how a bundled years should tiausform tbe scene, which they tben witnessed. but little time did Lewis and Clark have to puuder what the future years should biing to tbe locality which tbuy weie passiug. Eagerly they were pressing forwaid to the Bbore of tbe Pacific, which maiked theii journey's end. They hastened on their way, glad in thought that the tlrst half ot their arduous tiip would souu be ao oomplisbed in safety, and that foot woru aud weary, they could rest iu the sound of the ocean breakers. And so tbe yeais went ou and still on other pioneors (lime aud Baw tbe same beauteous scenery ot Hood Kiver, but passed ou to tbe Wilamette Valley where first came to be laid tbe foundations of tbe great oonim n wealth of the state of Oregon. But "though the milt of the Cods grind slowly tbey grind exceedingly Hut", aud with increasing years this tail valley began to be settled. From this time ou, the story is tamilar to us all. Fsr and wide wherever the English language is spoken, aud mote than that, eveu in countries where foreign tongues hold sway, the fame of Hood Kiver and hef marvelous products am known aud wondered at. I'be tot.io 1 bave chosen for this occasion is "A wiuuer" and to whom or to what oould it be belter applied than Hood Kiver lloocr-' liiver city, Hood Kivei valley, because tbey are all as inti mately associated with one auolher and their interests are as closely intermingled that tbey are in truth all in one. To anyone who has watched the development of Hood Kiver, city, valley, aud oouutiy, from the time wben tbe old Coe aud Kouson Dona tion Land Claims marked tbe Hist settlemeutfi, till today when tbe eyes of tbe whola country are turned to us iu wonder and admiration, suiely the stoiy is a wondrous one. Here, right in our midst, base been applied these intelligent applications of brain and Industry, which bave lesulted iu pioducing a truit which has received the applanation of Kings and Emper ors, hroni these very Holds which every day our eyes look upou, have been sent the products, the tairest ot their said, the It Mid has ever seen. Upon our mouutuiu soles and by the banks ot creeks and river. grow the timber which Mature has plauted, ami which the demands of man cause to be shipped to the tuithermost parts ot the world. i'be future prospects of our com munity are indeed bright Wben we think of the wondeilul improvements ot the pant few years, we can but wonder at wh .t n changes tbe future n ay hold lor us. Many new projects are being in ventilated and developed; new meth ods of boiticiiltuie are being studied for scieutitlc care of our orabards; the roads and streets of our valley and city are being improved; uen buildings are constantly springing up ou all sides Each year mure people come from less favored localities aud make their homes here; morn orchards are set out, more fields are put under cultivation, to supply tbe whole woild with tbe peei i - products of our soil. Each year the forest clad hillsides are dotted with more clearings anil the line of f1 rest is force I to retreat fur ther and further toward! snow-capped Mt. Hood. Indeed, our valley has been en dowed so many natural resnures aud sucb wild Bud magnificent scenery, that we may well wonder it this waa not tbe original Harden of Eden. The progressive people of oui locality chini; e I its rugged grandeur somewLat but tbey have made it still moie beautiful, with its well kept orcbaids and green fields. I be time allotted me is lai inade quate to do jns',.oe tc the beauties and advantages of our famous valley, liul not alone to tbe material side must we look. Ever since tbe valley tlrst began to be settled, careful at tention has been paid to educational features. From the small one stoiy school house have grown the spneious buildiDgs which are now to be fouud everywhere, and which mark the people of this community as intelli gent aud progressive citizens, who are determined that the risiug gener ation shall bave all tbe advantages possible in equipping them for tbe life that is opening out before tbem. It is this which iu the end willl make aud always keep Hood Kiver a "A Winner" In the true sense of the word. Rowel Complaint ir. Children When six months old tbe little daugh ter of K. N.
