Will AuKiist Orst is tbe time named for Huishlng the uradiut; of tbe uew ex tension of tbe Mt. tlnod Hailroad beyond Dee, and it is expected that tbe work will be practically completed at tbat time, exoept for a tew bad places nlonK tbe line, the worst of tboso buiuu near Dee, wDicb will probably require a couple of weeks longer to tlniab. The steel ruila toi the rxtension are already on tbe road, aud with plenty of ties at tbe mill at Dee, there will be no delay iu laying rails, aud tbat part of tbe work will not lequire much time to oomptete. I he matter of a new bridge over the Kast frYrk has been delayed. It was practically decided to put iu a steel bridge iostead of wood, bu; tbat mat ter was not deoided until Friday, so tbat It will require quick action to get the bridge done iu time tot tbe rest of tbe road. The question of a name for tbe new town and station at tbe end of tbe extension has bad due consideiatlon, aud tbe company have practically a.' rend upon tbe name of lialdwlu. This uaine la not altogether satlstac tory to the residents of tbe upper valley, who would like some name to designate that part of tbe Hood Kiver valley, realizing the value ot the rep utatinn of the name Hood Kiver, wbile tbe name lialdwlu would carry uo significance to a strnuger nnto. quainted with the locality. If a bet ter name is sugges'.ed, however, the railroad company bus no objection to adopting It. Anticipating that there will be a poetoltloe located there, a name of one word w ill be chosen, 111 the pcstoUlue department will accept no more names of postofliaes which hare more than one uame, otherwise, the uame Upper Hood Kiver could be used. The name Haidwin was sug gested by tbe oouipsuy for tbe reason that it was the name of oue of tbe early pioneers ot tbe Upper Valley and also for the reason that tbe vot ing precinct lu tha ter-itoiy is called Ualdwiu. There will he other sidings aud probably one ttation ou tbe Wood wort b plaoe uear Tomlinson's, but until tbat is deoided they will not he named. A new townsite is being laid out at tbe termiual, a general store will be put in, aud a resident ageut kept at tbat point. 'I be company have ten acres ot grouud at tbat point, and It will ke one of tbe important stations ou tbe line, probably next to Dee in the amount of business doue. Tbe location makes it tbe most accessible place ou tbe Hoe for tbe upper country, as it Is easily cached from all parts of tbe seotiuu betweeu tbe Hast and Middle Forks, over good roads aud practically level grades. That a small town will be built here la practically assured. Another importaut project iu the Upper Valley Is the incorporation ot tbe Riverside lirigation and Power Co, with W. H. Kccles, 0, I. Faily aud tO. 11. Ureen as Incorporators, with a capital stock of $20,000 It is tbe purpose of the oompauy to take about '2.&00 inches of water out ot the Middle Fork aud irrigate '2,300 aores of tbe land ou the bench betweeu tbe Middle and West Forks, opposite Dee. The ditcb will be put in opera tion for next year, and will be of great value to the land to be irrigat ed. Considerable land on tbia tench has been improved during tbe last year, and It now bus all the advan tages of any part of tbe valley, being located oloae to tbe Mt. Hood road, moderate elevation and the best o soil. At Odell a movement bas been made to get tbe business of tbat seo tion nearer tbe railroad station, and with this end in view I, W. Atkinson, of Pendleton, has purobased two aores of ground adjoining the road, on the old Davis place, aud near the Odell station. Lumber Is already on tbe ground foi a new store building, and Mr. Atkinson has a $15,000 stock of goods wbioh he will move from Peudletou to tbe new location at Odell. The extention of the railroai, tap uiug as it does tbat part ot the upper alley which was Lefore just out of reaoh, the centering of a new business at Odell station, will result in a very large increase in business tor tbe road, as well ai a stimulant to greater development along the line of the road, especially in the uppei valley. II will make (.rotltable the running ol trains ou tbe road which will be a Letter accommodation to travelers, in regard to time of leaviug aud return log to tbe valley the same day, and he a benefit to the general public. STRANGE JAP WITH "BRAIN BROKE" Saturday morning Marshal Lofta was called to tbe Hood Kiver haun dry. on Paradise I' aim, to arrest a voiinu Juo who was annoying lue girl. It appears that the fellow grabbed tbe tlrut girl that came in woik. but she broke away aud ran Into the building. Two others that came were treated iu the same way Tbe foreman arriving shortly aftei drove the Orientul away, hut as be stiil hung around the Marshal was notified and placed him under arrest. At tbe jail an interpreter wus secured, and after asking a few questious, said, "Jao bov crazy, liiain broke. It appears that be came from tbe eastern part of tbe state aud had been hanging around tbe Jap store and was without money. His uame is Fuzi oka. A day or two before he was out to tbe power plant of the Flectric Light company and his actlous were very stiange. lie could talk some Knglish and asked questions about, the wires and weut up to the switch board as it to take hold of the switch es, when be was tired out by Mr. Shutes. He was next seen 011 one ot tbe small buildings near tbe phut grasping one of the heavy lead wires with oue hand and was thou chased , i t 1... 11. I. Hurl hu tliknn hnlfl of tbe wire with both band or bad tbe 1 oof of the building keen wet so that tbe current from the wires bad passed through bis body, be would probably have been killed. Pruni there be weut to tbe bridge which carries tbe pipe line for the company over the river and climbed on top, walking around witb unconoeru. Painters were at work on tbe bridge and Ids actions were so strauge tbat he was ordeied oil and Constable (ianger notified, but the Jap bad disappeared when Air. Sanger appeared ou tbe soeue. At tbe jail the Jap has said several times be would like to get out so be oould jump to tbe river. When searched after bis arreat a button was found carefully w tapped iu a small rag, as if it were a coin. A charge of insanity was preferred and Tuesday morning he was exam ined before Judge Derby by County Physician Sbaw aud committed to tbe iusaue asylum at Salem. Mr-. He made a failure of the hotel and saloon busiuess and left bis wife, tbe matter ending in a divoroe. Mrs. iieuuiugseu H second marriage was probably a busty affair, as the giomn, who is .o years old, aid not kuow the (list uame of his intended wife when he applied for a liceuse. aud bad to go back and get tbe proper data before Cleik Angle would issue the license. About John I'inney. Oregon printers have kindly reool lections of John Finney, nho used to manage tbe American Type Foun ders Company s branch store iu Port land. John was a strenuous, six- fout-foui individual never bunting a scrap and never running from one a kind of "tread softly, but carry 11 nig stick sort and au all around prinoe or goon fellows who made mends of every newspaper publisher from Calfiornla to the British Col umbia liue. He is new at tbe head of tbe Amerloan company's branch house in Seattle, where iu addition to the arduous stunt ot selling press es, type and ink, and doing the "Pay Streak," he Muds time to publish a bright little magaziue called Finney s friuter. A copy of the Printer bas found its way to our table, aud we have spent a joyful hour in reading John's highly origiual "editorials." Hue is just a sample of what he get out ot hii system under tbe heading of "liilous Bill's Hunob of iiile:" "Tbey lasso a cow's hind-leg be oause she gets up rear first a horse's tore-leg because be geta up trout first.
