It srjs that svery year "thousands of eastern orchards are abandoued to San Jose scale, to tbe codling motb, to the wooly aphis, to the blight and tbe myriad other pests that prey upon the apple. Ecb year the Irost ruins 1 large percentage of the oiop. Ibe modem couirnernial orchard, scientifi cally manag-d, is almost unknown iu many orchard sectiom that in yi bih gone liy produced treroendons crops " This oun be and no doubt will be remedied some lint, but nowhere are there ioi b ijeai conditions for pro ducing fir st class apples as in Oregon. It is especially valuable a a cure for chronic and muscular rheumatism, and for the relief from pain which it affords in acute inflamaiory rheuma tism. Those who have used it have invariably spoken of it in the highest terms of praise, l.ame buck, lame shoulder ami Htiff neck are due to rheu matism of the muscles, usmlly brought on by exposure 10 Cold or damp, and are quickly cured by applying this liniment freely and massaging the affected parts. Soreness of the muscles, whether in duced by violent exercise or injury, is allayed by this liniment. For sale by all (iealers. F. A. CRAM. FITTED UP COM PLETE MACHINE SHOP The reporter droppe I in at the new machine shop of Foust & Howe at the corner of Columl ia and Sixth street and w is surprised at the extent of the idaut uud facilities for hand ling all kin 's of machine work. Since moving Ibe shop to its present quarters several new machines have been added ujtil they are now pre pared to do about anything that comes along iu the shape ol repair work. Ibe shop is a great ouuven leooa to the owners of automobiles as Mr. Poult is an expert in this line and oun repair any kiud of a I reuk that can he done out' ide of an nuto mobile factory lhey have added a vulcaui.er to make over old tires aud renair puuetures. Steam for the vul oauizei is provided by Ihe boiler of tuaold wood saw and as it takes fr u ornve h urs to vulcanize the rubber this machine is k"pt pretty busy. An old tire can bo maile as good as new at half tbe expouse of a new one even If almost entmlv worn out. Mr. Ko'ist was very buty Eri lay making a model for a new pipe wrench Which has been invented by a Hood Klvr limn and which promises to be better thau anything cf this kind wbioh is now on the market, ihe Arm have bIso just completed a ma abrne for cutting asparagus tips tbe inveutiun cf John Koherg aud which is being made tor bis use As Mr. Ku berg has a viry laige pa'ch of aspara gus and in putting it up for market be is anxious t. facilitate u.uotr hand work by tho use of tbe machine. Bi cycle repairing is also doi e at tbe she; and at this time of the year they are getting a good deal of tbis kind of work. A small lathe bas been added to the shop for doiug the smaller class of BMofaiue work while the large lathe will tske care ot the uea.y wurk. A band saw has been found necessary aud tbey dud It a great convenience in do iug work for inn customers. In ad dition to this a uew milling maobiue hai beeu installed. While their out fit is very compile Mr. Howe stated that the shoo would oe enlarged as last as tbe business warranted. For a burn or scald apply Chamlrei lain's salve. It will allay the pain al most instantly and quickly heal Ihe in jured parts. For sale by all dealers. Applet OncHsionaily it is hinted that Ihe orct'n r i business, i he production of Hr t class fruit, may be cerdone in Oregon Such fers seem unfounded. The popi lation of the world is con stantly increasing, and the consump tion of good fruit h increi rug tin re rat i liy than population Few places comparatively, ran be depeuded upon for perfect ti uit Severs 1 states pto- Afl Indiau cave has b-eu discovered in tbetolid rock about two miles from town. No one knows anything abont this cave, not even some ol the Id Inhabitants of the Uooduoe Hills who have resided in the Columbia valley for more than 40 years, c-or do the oldest Hock Cresk ludiau know any thing about tbis cave. W. P Kaucb volunteered to lead tbe tlrst exploring party ot 20 Otitis citizens to tbis wonderful cave of a few days ago, and siooe Ibattine every body wants to see it. Ibe cave is a mile from the railroad track. Ibe opening of the cave ia reached by a rouudabout walk up a gradual as oent ot from one to two miles. I he doorway of tbe cave is between two aud three feet high, and about four feet wide, and on account of Ihe loose boulders lying near a footman might pass very near to it without ob serving that it was a oave. These loose rock show by their color i hat tbey have not beeu moved for ages, and tbe quautity ot them indicates that tbey were placed tber I so as to wall op tbe mouth of the care if de sired Tbe entile party went inside, and it wus estimated that there was room for 200 more people The cmv is cf circular form, and from eight to nine feet to the highest point of the ceiling. Ihe formation iM that of burned lava rocks, and the condition ut the walls uud ceiling show traces of the worti of man A number of paintings. Indiau hierog lyphics, etc, are still to he seen on the smoothest rook in the ceiling. Parts of tbe walls appear to be smok ed, aud owing to the formation it is easy to break off fr grueuts of the lava rock which show very plainly that it had at one time undeigone a high degree of heat. A smooth sand lluoi at the bottom ot the cave, and an obstructed opening on ttie side to w ird a perpeudicular cliff only a few feet away give couclusive evidence the cave wus ouc used by wild In diaus. About 50 yards from this cave is an other wonder tbe handiwork of tbe Indians of years ago Tbis oousists of an opening out through tbe clitf to the perpendicular wall wnioh over looks the level valley of hundreds of aore below. Tbis window Is nearly foot wide and about three teet in height. No doubt many deer, hull alo or other wild animals have beeu killed on the flat below by Indiaus, who shot through this opening. Tbe oldest while tillers tell ot tbe remnants of a once large Indian village on tie ground where tbe town of Cliffs is built, and some ol tbe oldest Indians tell of tbeir "an ootta" fathers, living here many years ago when tbe first white man (sup posed to be tbe Lewis aud Clark ex (.edition drifted down tbe Columbia Kiver and stopped at this Indisn vil luge several days The fluding ot many i 'diau curins such as stone ax es, mortars, pestles, battle-axes, flint arrow points, etc , give further evi deuce ot a tribe once occupying these grounds.
