Dispensary Medical Association, Props" Buffalo N Y ANOTHER LETTER FROM OTTEN-HILL PARTY MM Ooenn, January 10, 1909. Editor Uluicer Ihe last time we wrote you we were it 1 remember cor rectly .bout to go and bear the Koyal Hawaiian Bund, wbioh wa did and enjoyed it greatly, to out surprise very few people were out. We uuked seveial why the people did uot tutu out bettor. l'heii answer was thnt the weatbot was too cold. It wuh cool and there wns a little sprinkle of rain now and then, but for December was simply beautiful. It wag waun enough to use an umbrella for protec tion from the sun and showers in be tween. During that week we took in be few points of interest iu and around the city. Went out to the pineapple district where you ride for miles and miles ti rough sugiir cane Belda before coming to the pineap ples. Vp passed through this district liutd with Holds of the fruit in difter ent stages ot growth, it taking two years, 1 believe, for tbem to msituie. One place we were told the tons of plants were two miles lung so you may realize to pnir.e extent the acie age, when it took two hours to reach the end of the road, where we were met and taken o a hotel, you might call it, still it ia a private bungalow home, where we weie served to a good home oooked dinuei, with fresh aud deliiious strawberries f erred with choppei pineapple for deceit, our host saying they had to mix in the pineapple to make the berties go urouod as it was just a little early tnr berries, but 'a January we thought ourselves fortunate to bare thorn even mixed. While there ia uot much to do here to ciooupy your time we managed to pot in the week to good advantage and on luesduy started on the trip to the volcano. We bad been told in liouolulu that the trip was something tierce, but to our great satisfaction we.bad a lively trip, no one ot ua the least little tit seasick aud enjoyed every minute of it We passed the leper Island in the distance. A more desolate looking place you could uot imagine, though they told us the other tide, where the settlement is located is very Htn. Well we hoped it was for the take of those who always bave to stay there after having once been banished. One thing we no ticed in Honolulu, every where are homes and sobools for the children of poor or leper parents, ho they are to be pitied. The next morning we were on the coast of the island of Hawxii, tlr largest of the group, it is very, very beautiful, just as far as the eye cculd see was plantation after plantation of sugarcane, green aud leautiful. Uete and there as we passed along was what appeared to be a small tou but on inquiry we were t,id 'hey weie the pi HiiHiiou f iliiings Kuril Un til, ii. n Im ii cwu pusiollire. rime, t Uoi I. church, elo Aloft t.l l ieui t.aie i l.t r own f.tigur mill. Here we bad dinner and took a ride out to their one wonder, Kaiubow falls. Afterwards we to"k the train to Ulenwood, passing through a real jungle that looked as though it would be impossible to penetrate After a lew miles of this we once more went lor miles and miles through the fields of oaue. At Ulenwood we took a stage foi a 9-mile ride to the Volcano House, we passed again through the jungles with here and there a clearing aud at last about 7 o'clock w :iw the bright ted glow from the volcano. Even that seut a thrill through you, as we were very impatient at our slow progress, it being uphill, but at Us1: we arrived tired and hungry ami were met ly the sailing . landloid, Mr. Ueajofthenes Lycurgos. 1J is dinner whs just as good as his name 1j loig and we all did it justice. As soon aftet dinner a- we could we were fitted out with noises, lauterns, divided skirt fur the ladies, (all tiding usttide) and a gaide and we started for the crater. We went one and one half miles by trail tb'oogh the jungle almost straight dan hill, then two miles aoross the lava beds, the glow from the crater ever guiding us on to Kil avea, the greatest aotive volcano in the world. At last we are there; all we cau tay or do is to stand on the blink of the great precipice and gaze down 215 feet ou four acres of burn ing lava and exclaim How beautiful ! Look there, oh! Look over there! Isn't that grand, etc. 1 can ouly nay as a gentleman said, we see it, we taste it, we smell it, we wondei what power is behind it, but we have not the words to describe it. it is simply graud. At last we had to leturn to the hotel to sleep. In the morning aftei goiug over the sulphur beds iind lookiug and wondering about the steam escaping from eveiy crack iu the ground, we again started to the crater to see it by day light. It whs just as beautiful in its way as by night aud we enjoyed it thoroughly. Ihe next innrniug at half past six we very reluctautly climbed iuto the old stage and started ou our return trip over the same old way, aud bad ouly one oue experience. At Laupahoehoe we 'Hiv them kiing so e donkeys aboard. Ihey put a btrong halter and rope ou theni and trail them after the boat lo the steamer here they hoist tbem up on a sort of a rope ladder. Une poor donkey would not swim at all aud seemed scared to death. At about 7 o'clock a. m we again unit ed at Honolulu, wbeu we decided to start for dan Frauciscn, as there was a laige steamship, the Maschuiiti, ready to sail, aud there was uo other ship on wbioh we could sail until Jau uary 39, which was longer thuu we thought we oared to stay as the weath et bad become quite oppressive. So jv are homeward hound with only oue regret. Home liawaiiau friends said they bad planned a laub iu our honor at their home, that being to the best of wnr knowledge a teal Ha waiian dinner, however Ihey came to see us off aud decorated ua iu their Leis wbioh we threw hack as we sailed away with alah to those we were leav ing behind and happy to get uearer the loved ones at home.
