SHELLEY HEARS THE GOOD NEWS CarBon.Waah., Sept. 20. Editor Glaoior: 1 note witb plesure tbe repoit in ;e.terdaaj'a Ort-ooian of tU tale of 50,000 boxea f choice Hood Kiver ap ples. Remembering tbBt Mr. Loomif, of Looinia & Co., aaid laut year that in tbe cuatter of marketing apples Hood Kifer stood in class of bet owu Tbat "sueb a pioduct ai Hood Kiver tuiDiabed would always Hod a ready eale at a good prio," aud uow Mr. Steiubart, the present purchaser ays: Hood Kiver in tbe pivotal point around which buyers revolve ior the fluent grade of applo htoclt tbat is put opou tit- market anywhere In tbe world, aud we aud tbe otbor arms know it. It ie surprising tbat such a comparatively small ciopas is grown bore outs such a tig Hure in tbe ap ple world, but it is acoouuted for oy tbe faot that dealers everywhere recog nize that Hood River apples are the absolute standard of excellence in quality and as lung as Hood Kiver continues to ship tbe One qualtiy of apples for wbioh ebe is noted, there will be a good market for them at high prices." Such opinions, coming as tbey do from some of tbe largest dealers and exporters In tbe United States, tbould hove a tendency to establish firmly in tbe mind of tbe apple grcwer cf Hood Kiver tbat there is little dauber of an oversupply of its peerless product. After having been absent about a year from Hood Kiver, smrounded by tbe pessimist and knocker, tbe this piece of good news is probably more refreshing to me than to many of yoftr apple kings who are already on easy street. During tbe past six years 1 have noted carefully the marvelous develop ment of your valley aud watched with Interest prices tbat have steadily in creased and many times through your columns I have expressed an abiding faith in tbe gieat future of your fair valley, the like of whicb.from a stand point of 8oenic beauty, cbaiming en vironments aud prollt producing pro ducts, cannot be surpassed in the world. Nature has indeed been lavish there, adding to the splendid natural vantages. You will peimit me to say tbat these results are largely due to the intelligence of your citizens, backed up by grit and perseverance. To tbe good work of tbe Commercial Club, your community at laige and tbe dissemination of knowledge tbat bas gone out through your valuable newspapers (the Glacier having done the pinneei work) much credit is due. Aud I give it as my opinion tbat it requires no prophetic tiuger to point to tbe time at no very distant day when tbe prl.e of tearing orchards in your valley will find quick buyers at double tbe prices tbat they are telling (oi today. Koswell Shelley. HOOD RIVER OLAOTBK, tatmftPAY, OCTOBER 1 I9Q. 29 oreasiug cares of her sick and aged relatives, wbiob to her was a labor of love. However, a large circle of trieuds accorded ber tbe respect, con Aden e and love of which she was worthy. Mrs. Cantletd came to Hood River some thirteen years ago witb ber ancle aud aunt, tbe late Mr. and Mrs. P. r. Bradford, both of whom died a few year later, leaving to ber loving care another aged uncle, Mr. A. Brad lord, and an aunt, Mrs Daniel Brad lord. She was loved as u daughter in ber uncle's family and no daughter oould excel in service tbe care bestowed upon tbese aged relatives. By ber cheery, kind disposition and tbuogbt fulness tor ether she soon endeared herself to many and made for herself a place in tbe cburcb and community, from wbiob sbe will be sadly missed. She was, as ber pastor said, "a thorough Cougiegtttionalist," having been brought up in this faitb trom ber early childhood. Her cburcb ilfe and her work were very dear ;to ber and for years sbe took a leading part in tbe choir aud was an active worker in tbe Ladies Aid. In all of tbe de partments ot oliuich service her life bore the mark of deep devotion and conscientiousness of spirit. Not only was she a woman of deep oonviotion and earnest spirit, but sbe possessed tbe rare gift of calling fortb the faithful service of her co-workers in every good work. The ordering of ber course and bearing were as the powerful forces of nature, quiet, deep and beneficent, ever moving steadily .to spread tbe swest influences which would soothe, strengthen and cheer. We who knew ber best wish that all knew tbe beauty aud power which dwells in suoh a life as was hers. It was a rare return foi ber kind ness, after carin; for all of ber family through sicknss and death, tbat sbe found so many kind friends to min ister unto ber through ber last illness and when the shadows were falling sbe gave to tbem a smile and cheery words, which we all so well remember. The record of suoh a life is its own fitting memorial, and one could not help but feel honored in having en joyed the friendship and fellowship of one so oapable, earnest aud devoted.
