Hood, applea grow wbiob are shipped all over the civiliz ed would, and the lusolousnees of whioh ia enjoyed by the settler in Bouth Africa, the inhabitant of Si beria, the sous and daughters of tbe Orient and tbe bardy fortuue seekers of Alaska. Ibeae apples gi every where and ure sold in all of tbe mar kets of tbe woild. Perhaps there is not a plaoe in tbe world wbeie tbe apples produoed are more sought aftei and Ond a more ready sale than tboso produoed bere. Before tbe crop Is fully matured buyers begin to get in touob with tbe local snippers and utu lally befoie gathering time tbe eutlre crop bas been sold to tbe orobard at pries that would make tbe average ap ple grower gasp with aatoniabment. Laat year and tbe year before tbe whole orop was disposed ot in this way, tbe lowest price paid being II 50 a box and tbe blgbeat M.27 a box. The Upitzenberg is tbe variety of apple that does beat bere and brings the best prioe. Last year tbe fancy Hpitzenbergs sold f. o. b. at $'1.27 a box. Ibis was tbe prioe bid for tbe entire output ot tbe liood Kiver Ap ple Urowers Union, which practically meant all tbe fancy Spitzeobergs lu tbo Hood Hirer valley. Tbe bidder was tbe Davidson Fruit Co. of this place. Other grades of Hpitzen bergs sold at from M.25 to 93. Ibe Yellow Newtowu Pippin ranks second in this valley In quality and market value. They sold last year at from $1.75 to 82.25 a box. Ihey an excellent keepers and can be shipped all over the world. They bate some ripples bere now ot last year's groMtb aud tbey aie as sound aud perfect as they were the day tbey were taken from tbe tree. Ihey bave never been in oold storage, either. Hood Kiver apples bave been shipped to Europe, to South Africa aud to Cbina and tbey have cert led so perfectly that when tbey reached their destination they were lu as good condition as when tbey started from this station, their carrying qualities ara unex celled. Last year there were 175 oars of ap ples shipped from this valley. Ibis year It is estimated that tbe ship menta will reach 250 cars. A large number of new orchards have come into bearing this yenr and then tbe yield is very large. Tbe fruit U uu usually flue this season and. If posal ble. the quality excells that of last year's orop. Tbe Hood River Apple Urowers Un ion handles at least UU per cent of tbe shipments from this valley and It is very careful to see tbat tbe fruit that is parked tor eastern shipments is ot tbe very tlneat quality. Ibe union bas always beeu proud of the reputation tbat the Hood Kiver apples bave made for themselves In the niai kets ot tbe world and it is seemingly dtermlned to guard tbat reputatlou with zealous care. This year a rule of tbe uuion is to the ettect tbat its fancy pack will contain perfeot apples only and tbat all lmperreotlons, Dow ever si ght, will be ruled out. Tbe apples must not only be perfeot but of uniform size. No apples are shipped east exoept the fancy pack. Hie choice pack is bo Id in the western markets. Heavy shipments of choice pack were made to Alaska last year and good prices were realized by tbe shippers. Fruit shipments from North Yakima at tbis time are averaging about ten cars a day. The warm weather ia bringing tbe Iruit in fairly rapidly but tbe Immense total shipped lust week bas bad tbe effect of pretty well cleaulng up all exoept tbe later stuff uear North Yakima. Tbe lower valley is about shipped out of the immediate fruit. There lemaiua in cold storage here, it is understood, some 15 or 20 cars ot peaches wbiob will require icing when tbey are shipped, which will be before long. There are in the railroad yard bere to some sixty empty refrigerator cars held in waiting for tbe shippers when they ask for them. One feature about the work this summer to date bas been tbe manner iu wbiob tbe rail road has furnished ioed oars when sought by those sending out tbe fruit. There have been oomplalnts, or at least grumbling, of some delay iu moving cars or slowness in travel after tbey have been turned over by tbe abippers. These, however, have tut been serious aud up to tbis time it is safe to say, the railroad end ot tbe buslueis has beeu very satisfactory ail along tbe line and much better thau was anticipated by those wbo retain a liroly recollection of what ooourred last year.
