cessful event. Much merriment was

ical Society of J be Dalles will plane
a market on the grave of I'. H Balob,
author of The liridgo of the Uods,
who is buried In the cemetery at Lyle,
Washington. Tbe society will also
visit tbe oburoh, now used as a school
bonne, which he Helped to build and
bold memorial exercises. The Dalles
people will go from The Dalles to

their destination. The exercises will

new pastor was formerly a prominent
member of tbis conference and for
several years whs located at Seattle.
Later be was connected with church
work in Eastern Washington. His
it ohnrge was at Cbaiiton, Iowa,
hut owing to the fact that the cliinttte
did not agree with his wife's health
he was compelled to return to the
coast.

Election to Amend Charter SuccesKfiil'
The speoiael election beld Tuesday
to amend tbe city charter resulted in
all three mersures of the xmeuduieuU
being carried. Tbe vote was a liiiht
cue and very little opposition was
manifested to any of the measures ex
cept the one providing for street im
provement out ot the general fund.
This was, however, carried liy a vote
of 95 to 65. Tbe amendment provid
ing tor an increase in the indebted
ness of the city from 2, WW lo 5,000
was carried by a vote of 121 to 3, aud
the one permitting the city to borrow
funds to tbe amount of &,(W0 was also
successful by a vote of 125 to 35.

A Traveling Man's Experience.
"I must tell vou my experience on an
east bound O. K. & N. H. It. trnin from
1'endleton to La Grande, Oie.," writes
Sam A. Oarlier, a well-known traveing
man. "I waa in the cmoking depart
ment with some other traveling men
when one of them went out into t he
coach and came back and said, 'There
is a woman sick unto death in the car.'

not straighten them, and with a death
like look on her face. Two or three la

her whiskey. I went to my suit caee

(I never travel without it) ran to the
water tank, put a double dose of medi
cine in the glass, poured some water
into it and stirred it ith a pencil; then
1 had (iiite a time to get the ladies to
let me give it to her, but I succeeded.

worked with her, rubbin" her hands,
and in twenty minutes I gave her an
