Tbis winter tbe state of Oregon will be 50 years old and it has been sug gested by the Oregon Daily Journal tbat some kiud of a semi centennial celebration be held. Oregon was admitted to tbe union as a state on February 14, 1859, says tbe Journal, berce ou that day next year, 1909, will occur the fiftieth an niversary or semi-centennial of tbe birth of Oregon as one of tbe states of tbe great American uuiou. The popu lation of Oregon tbe next year, 1800, was 5'2,4I!5, having Increased from 12, 204 iu 1850 These numbers luclude only white population When admit ted, therefore, Oregon bad about 50, 000 white people. Its growth has been slow, but it has grown some, eno igh to celebrate. Most if not all states tbat have pass ed the semi-centennial mark have cel ebrated tbe event, studied and re counted 'heir development, rejoioed in their progress and portraved the victories of tbe future. Why should not Oiegon follow tbis example? Tbe time is short, only five months, but it is sutlloent to prepare some sort of a celebration for the fiftieth anniver sary of tbis splendid state. Tbe Journal has seen nn nieution mad. i of this matter yet and so brings forward the suggestion. The anniver sary will come at a time of year wbon nothing else iu particular ia doing, and when people of all sorts can take a littlo time tor this affair. A ponderous freight train out of Ashland Tuesday morning, says tbe Tidings, comprising 40 or more heav ily louded cars, was climbiag the Sis kiyou grade propelled by five big locomotives, three on tbe Lead end and two on the rear, when a car in the middle of tbe train suddenly donbled up and Ibe tremendous power behind it crushed the oar Into kindling and scattered its contents of barley broad cast. Tbe accident blocked the tiaok for several hours and delayed passen ger trains. Tbe ear was too "weak" in iti structural capacity to withstand the tremendous Impact of tb long train and was literally torn to pieces. Formerly it was tbe custom of the Southern Pacifio company operating department to divide its freight trains into sections across the mountains, but nowadays it ia tbe practice to make up long trains and add loo o mo tives in proportion.
