Hood ki Visit OLAOlKBTHttflAt fiisPTElri&ft 11 tm. igoob Shirr (Slarirr Issued Every Thursday by ARTHUR D. MOE. Publisher. ""The enumeration of tbe number of fsrple tree at Hood Hirer made last year by tbe experiment itatlon of tbe Oregon Agricultural College placed tbe number at 390.0U0. There weie many small orobarda which were not, however, included in tbit eoumern tlnn and durins tbe year that bai hpsed aince tbe census was taken, tbooaanda of treea have been planted. We believe tbat tliere are fully 500,000 i pie treea at present in liood river Tiilley. At first glance tLia may not aeem a very large nouiber compared to some of tbe great apple growing districts, but a little calculation baaed on tuture results may not be uninter esting FJaoing tbe probable aveiage yield at tbree boxes to tbe tree in five yeara we have tbe tidy amount of 1 1, 000,000 boxea or 2,500 oara Figuring an average prloe for tbe fruit at 11.50 per box we bave tbe lum of 12,000,000, On tbis basin it ia easy to puceive tbat altbougo many developments are taklDg place to meet tbe immense in crease in business and to facilitate tbe baudling of tbe already fast Increasing ontput, we are not progressing any too rapidly. Tbe growing interest in better roads for Hood Kiver county Indicates tbat tbe meter is being seriously consider ed. It ia claimed by those who bave given tbe matter considerable study tbat tax of five mills on tbe assessed valuation of property in tbe valley would raise an amount sufficient to pay the interest on bonds in sum big enough to eighty to hundred miles of road. It does not aeem as If there could be anything done tbat would be a better investment to Hood Kiver for property ownera than roads tbat would be in gooi condition at all sea sons of tbe 'year. The small amount required of each taX payer to con struct and maintain them would bs realized many times over In saving of time both in hauling fruit and gen eral tarfflo. To transport tbe enor mous amount of frnit tbat will soon be produod in tbe valley makes it Im putative tbat better roads be provided and to bave tbem ready for Increased traffic means that work ought to be oommenoed in tbe very near future. Many realize tbe urgont necessity for the permanent improvement and con struction of tbe new highways, but it cannot be dine except through con cet ted action. It Is hoped that tbe good roads meeting which will be held bore September 19 will result in form ulating a plan for dtifray lug' tbe ex pense of road improvement and tbat it will be put into execution with as little delay as possible.
