the securities corporation of 40 Wall

between Now rork and London and

from Los Angeles. Reoently wben be

would be a splendid idea to take a
banker friend tbere a box of apples.
He went to a fruit dealer and made
known his wants tor tbe best apple is,
tbe market.
There is ouly one apple in tbe
market worth buying," he was told,
aud that is what is called tbe Oiegon
apple. Everyone is asking for it now,
and will take nothing else attei ouce
trying it."
This wrt9 said to a toi mer Ualitorma

Mr. Selleck goes ou to say tuat no
himseli wbeu in New York buys them
every day at the fruit stands and pays
15 cents to JO cents apiece ror inem,
aud does not consider it money ill

sold there under ine general name oi

meut enough. Tbey are Spitzenberg,
Newtown Pippins aud tbe Bauanu ap
pie, which has never beeu grown else
wheie. Mr. Selleck pays 30 cents for
it at the fruit stands. Mr. Selleck is
eager that the commercial bodies here

when you love to smell a skunk; wbeu
a drummer bas no brass wbeu these
things all come to pass, then tbe man
tbat'a wise will oegleot to advertise "
Advertising as well as everything else
t at is worth doing, should be done
oorreotly, and no man does this light
who a rnply tells his local paper be
will take a space, tbeu confides to bis
intimates "that he takes tbe space be

for months he changes his ad, ao nat-

aware that bis fellow citizens are
sending to tbe large oities money tbat
should be spent in their borne town,
simply beoause tbe wide awake city
meichant is advertising in every way
aud plaoing catcby prices before tbe
country people. Tbe town merchant
can sell cheaper anil can give fresher
goods and a better money a worth.
but bow is tbe thing to be done if be
does not take an interest in telling
bis fellow citizens of tbe bargains he
has tor tbem. Think of the expenses
of a big city store witb enormous
rents, clerk hire and the million ex
peases tbat pile up Id tbe city, men
think of the smaller merobant who
oould undersell this oity store and
still get rich, if he would, in tbe
meantime bow does the oity merchant
reach tbe people? By advertising
"special sales" and then when be bas
caught his bird be sells many dollars
worth tbat Indemnities bim for any
loss this small pi Iced article on sale
has cost him.
It certainly pays to advertise. The
man who keeps up a constant run ot
telling bis wares, wiui out. You must
remember tbe people in tbis world
are rushing about und tbe only thing
tbey stop to do is to read tbe papers.
So have sometbiug tbere, in a catcby
