HOOP KtVER OLA IER, THPKSDAY, JUL? 6. 190ft. f ; 11 i i Trescott's Graduation. By JAMES CHAMBERS. CopjrlthU.4, UT7. bjr C. II. Sutcllffe. Trescott clipped the mlvertlHotnent from the pnper and tucked It Into btf pockotbook. lie hnd nlKut made up his niluil to go to one of the fashion able resorts for liln mouth's vacation, but this apieallng advertisement do cliled hlni. It was Just a few Hues of small typo, but every wnlenre painted alluringly the delights of a summer on a fans and announced that Klin farm was to be rented for the mouth of August at an extremely reasonable, rate. Trescott wrote to "E. Mnrsden, agent," and the answer decided him. lie could bare a far better time than would lie his If cooiied up In some stuffy room at an expensive hotel, and tho thought of a whole bouse to him self for no entire month was attrac tive after having occupied the tiny liedroom and parlor of a bncbelor apartment for eleven months. So Mnrsden engaged to have the farm house put In projier order by the first Saturday In August. It was with pleasurable anticipation thatTrescottclliiilied Into the buckboard that mot him at the station. The farm was a comfortable looking place, some fifteen acres In extent, and lKirdorlng a small lake. Tho house, a two story frame, was painted, and Iieds of flow ers made the front yard gorgeous. Inside It was the pink of cleanliness, but the place struck a chill to his soul. The arrangement of the furniture re minded htm of the cheap boarding house In which he had spent his first years In the city, and try as he would he could not alter the gaunt arrange ment of tho place. He had sent some money to tho agent with tho request that some simple groceries lie put In, and he bad no trouble In getting bis supiier, but the moment the meal was "TOUCAN HELP I" HniD CONPEPCD, WITH over and tho dishes washed he went out of dooru to smoke his pipe. He did not enter the place again until It was time to seek the chill liedroom. It was rnluiiig the next morning, and ho spent a most miserable day roaming about the dreary rooms and wishing for the Sunday papers. He had a couple of books In his satchel, but he could not make himself com fortable enough to read, and, after vainly seeking to change the furniture about Into some semblance of com fort, ho gave It up and dragged au old rocker out to the barn. Here, at least, he felt less oppressed by the dreariness of It all. He spent a fairly comfortable after noon and was just about to rouse him Bclf to go la and prepare supper when the sound of wheels cnught his ear, followed In a moment by the jangle of the doorbell. He raced across the yard and through tho bouse to present himself at the door. A young girl stood ou the porch, while an elderly woman sat In the covered buggy. "flood afternoon," was her brisk Brectlug. "Is Mrs. Trescott at home?" 'There isn't any Mrs. Trescott," he nald, with a laugh, "unless you mean my mother. She Is In Knglaud Just now." "I am Miss Marsden," she explained. "I drove out to get acquainted and see how you liked the place. I sun posed, of course, that there was a fam ily." "There Isn't any family," he said, "and I don't like the place. Of all the dismal places I was ever lu this If the worst. I was going lu to tell your brother so In the morning. 'Comfort able and homelike,'" he quoted from the advertisement. "And he promised to have It all fixed up." "There was a woman here all day Friday," tho girl said. "Didn't she rlean.up properly?" "She elwiiied up," he conceded, "but I can't make the place look homelike. I shiver every time I look at It. I'm going to ch(t'igi the name and call It Lemon rami instead." "I gness It's n.it a bad as that," she said, with a rlppilur; laugh. "I thought there would bo a woman tu the family to make things look 'homey,' o I did not come myself. May we come In?" He stood nsldo lu silent Invitation. He followed them Into the house, and his admiration for the personality of the brisk young woman Increased as she rapidly moved from room to room, giving tho touch here and there that was needed to transform the apart meats. "You're a magician," he declared as, with a final pat to the sofa pillows, she transformed the parlor and moved into the dining room. "Now It looks like a place to be lived in." j "It's the pun ly feminine ton1i that no bachelor can acquire," she eald, with a little laugh. "If I had known that you were alone, I should have been out yesterday morning before you arrived." "I'm glad you t.alted," be said sim ply. "Won't you and your mother stay to supper? I can cook If I can't kep bouse. I wlil put the horse up nnd you can telephone your brother." "I am 'K. .Marsden,' " Bhe explained. "I have no brother. When father died I decided to keep up the business. Eva Marsden did not look very well, and, besides, people do not like to do busi ness with a woman. So, between the simple Initial and a typewriter, I man ago to get along." "You should cuino to town," be ad vised, "and .all yourself a 'home maker.' It ought to lie worth a lot of money." "That might be profitable In winter," she agreed. "Perhaps I will try It." "But In the meantime, supper," lie Insisted. "I'll look after tho horse. There are a couple of magazines you might care tj look at while I am gone. I shall not be long." He dashed out to get the horse under cover. Ho roamed the back way and surprised '.be girl bustling about the kitchen. "You can help," she concedtd, with a smile, "but I Just know that you can't make biscuit." "But I can," he Insisted. "I'll show you some day. Meantime I'll make the coffee and put the things ou the table." "The table Is all set," she cried. Tfou must think me a very slow house keeper." "It takes me longer than that," n admitted, "though I suppose that prac tice makes perfect, and before long I ball bo able to do as well as you." "I'll come to tea on your last nlgbt here and let you give n graduation ex hibition," she promised, with a laugh. "Meantime you might get some fresh water." Trescott was sorry to see them drive off, but the girl left behind the fra grant memory of her presence, and the place scorned homelike at last. Trescott saw much of the Marsden In the days that followed, and long before the end of bis month 'he bad come to love the light hearted girl who had faced the world so bravely when necessity demanded. The yacatluu drew to a close all too soon, and Trescott Insisted upon hold ing Eva to her promise to attend bis graduation exhibition. Afterward they sat out uuder the trees while Mrs. Marsden drowsed contentedly upon tho porch. "Have you been thinking over that hoiucmnking proposition?" he asked. Eva looked up, with a smile. "I think I Inek the courage to make a try," she confessed. "It has been very easy here. It Is best to leave well enough alone." "I)o yon think you would care to take on a single contract?" he suggest ed. "You have spoiled me for a bach elor apartment." "I might help you get started lu a flat," she agreed. "I usually take a vacation after the summer season la over. I could help you buy your things nnd settle them." "Hut I should want you to stay nnd help use thein," he explained "to bo a perpetual homemnkcr to one lone bachelor. What do you say, dear?" "I think," she whispered, "that I should like that plan better than the first." "Then seal the contract with a kiss," pleaded TreRcott. Mimulman Law Agalmt Painting "Do you paint?" I asked, going to ward the easel, disguising my sur prise at meeting with Buch disregard of Mussulman customs In this ortho dox household. "No, not painting, just playing. It Is only an Impression, not a reproduc tion, of one of Allah's realities." (lood Mussulmans do not believe In "repro ducing Allah's realities," yet there stood on the easel a charming pastel Even orthodox Moslems I saw were not above beating the devil round the stump. "How very beautiful!" I exclaimed. "Alshe Hauum, you are an artist." 'Tray, pray, young Hanum," Bhe protested, a Uttlo frightened, tnought; "pray do not say such things, t am not an artist. I ouly play with the colors." "Let me Bee some more of your playing," I persisted. Ilather reluctantly, though wishing to comply with her guest's desires he brought out a large portfolio 'yn tabling several pastela and water col- ori, aud we sat down on a rug to examine them. Whether they were well done or not I cannot tell, but they were full of life and happiness Tho curious purt was that whenever she painted any outdoor life she ualnt td It from her window, and on the canvas first was the window aud then through It you saw tho landscape as he saw it.
