... J 'ft ntbb nrvt'A fttioaait, thuahpay, June ii i&dA. Woman'sWorid MRS. KATE L JONES. TKa Nw Pr..d.tit of th. Woman'. National Rlif Corp. Mis. Kata E. Jon th. n. ... tlonal prwMant of the Woman'a Re- iwr corps, who was elected to lta bfgheat office by the great woman's auxiliary of the Q. A. R. at the annual encampment In Saratoga last summer, Is one of the ablest of patriotic work ers. In choosing her the Woman's corpa has honored one of Its beat known veterans. Mrs. Jones Is a pioneer In the work of the W. R. C. She has been In the movement ever since it began, and she helped It to begin. It was Mrs. Jones who organized and was made presi dent of the first Woman's Relief corps In New York state. That was m Sep tember, 1883. Six months later, through her efforts, the department of New York state was formed. The first national convention of the Woman's Relief corps at Minneapolis In 1884 found her seated as a delegate. She was elected national chaplain In 1888; has served two years as depart- MBS. KATB B. JOKES. ment president and four years as de partment counselor. For the past four years Mrs. Jones has been devoting her efforts to the new work of patriot lc Instruction, Inaugurated by the Wo man's Relief corps, In which she baa done efficient work, traveling all over the country and Introducing new fea turesthe department presentation of flags, the badge pin contests and the flag mission to the white schools of the south. Mrs. Jones gets her patriotic Impulse directly, being a lineal descendant of the Herklmer-Schuylers of Revolution ary fame. A strong effort was put forth for her election last year. She won out this year in a lively contest for the leadership. Why Wo Do Thoso Things. Many customs are so common that we have lost sight of their origin. Times and habits have changed. Rel ics of olden days have been banded on and carried down from generation to generation to our present day. Shaking hands is an example and began In this way: When adversaries were making a truce with one another each found It wiser to grasp the oth er's weapon hand to Insure himself against treachery. The truce conclud ed, they become friends, and so the custom grew as a salutation between friends. Even nowadays enemies do not shake hands till peace-a truce ia made. Perhaps the modern woman discov ered the origin of the courtesy, and that is why it bos dropped out of use. At one time It was the custom for women to go on the knee to men of rank to beg for mercy, and later It became an acknowledgment of superiority. That Is why it Is stlU retained where royal ty is concerned, but the example of the old country woman who still "bobs'' to the squire's lady Is not fol lowed by the younger generation, and the pretty courtesy that was the fash ion when our grandmothers held sway is now forsaken and almost obsolete. A man when greeting a lady raises his hat. Why does his salutation take this form? In the days when armor was more fashionable than silk hats or panamas the helmet was only raised when no danger was near, so to lift the hat wna a sign that the wearer dared to stand In the presence of the person so greet ed unarmed. What of the oldest of old customs, the kiss? To kiss Is to adore, and the word adore signifies simply to carry the hand to the mouth. Kissing the band to the statue of a god was a Roman form of adoration and as a mode of salutation expressed reverence and worship. To .kiss the book when tak ing an oath Is a public acknowledg ment that you adore the deity whose book you kiss. To kiss the lips is to adore the living breath of the person saluted. In Scripture allusion is made to kissing the hem of garments, which signifies an adoration of anything be longing to or touching the wearer, while kissing the feet or ground was ;to bumble oneself in adoration. nobodyTpared Kidney Troubles Attack Hood River Men and Women, Old and Yonng. Hopes Center at Denver. Chicago, June 8. Leaders in the woman suffrage movement held a meeting today to decide what they should do with the Republican Na tional Convention. The radicals were in favor of fighting, but the veterans counseled moderation and said the best plan was neither to beseech nor demand, but to make a dlnlfled re quest. The women are very hopeful that the Democratic National Conven tion will grant them a suffrage plank, as they have some sort of under standing with Bryan to this effect. Portland, Or., June 8. George II. Kill, vice-president of the defunct Title Guarantee & Trust Company, will not be prosecuted on the four charges on which he was indicted with J. Thorburn Ross, T. T. Burk hart and J. E. Aitchlson. All four charges were dismissed this morning in the Circuit Court by Presiding Judge Gantenbein at the motion of the Deupty District Attorney. The dismissal of the charges as to Hill does not affect the other three bankers, and they still have the charges hanging over them. Ross is the' only one who has had a trial and he was tried on only one of the four charges. It is the opinion of District At torney Manning that Hill was not active as an officer of the bank and knew practically nothing of the deals which led to the Indictments. The books of the hank revealed no active participation by Hill. If State Treasurer George A. Stael Is Indicted because ef tkt part he played In the handling f the educa tional fund of the state, which re sulted In its dissipation by the offi cials of the Title Guarantee & Trust Co., It will be returned by a grand jury or an Information will have to be filed by George J.
