Myrun S Smith, the Underwood

off passengers at that place, lie snid
It waa reported tbat a platfoim baa

no doubt provision would be made to
load strawberries tbia year at tbat
place.
The atation at Hood, their nearest
railroad atatiou at the present, la
practically Inaooesiable to Under
wood. Ther is no road to tbe plaoe
od tba only way to get there ia to
walk down tbe track (or two miles.
It liea at tbe toot of a steep bluft and
cannot be reached Irom tbe top of
tbe mountain above, while along tbe
liver there ia no wagon road to tbe
plaoe from Underwood.
Tbe farmers are spending 1600 on
tbe new road op tbe valley, which waa
built tbree tears ago, and it is the
beat road out of tbe White Salmon
valley, being a watei grade and much
shorter than tbiuugb White Salmon,
while saving a very heavy grade now
existing on the White Balmon road.
Tbe railroad company now bas a
steam shovel at work just west ot Un
derwood taking out boulders aud
rook, loading tbree train loads a day,
wbiob ia being taken to riprap the
road just below Stevenson, opposite
the rock being removed will make
room tor a sidetrack at Underwood,
and there is no doubt the business
which will come to Uuderwoid trom
tbe valley will make a side track and
atation absolutely necessary at Uuder
wood, or tbe business will be ferried
across tbe river to Mood Kiver and
loaded on tbe U. K. & N. trains, as
It will be oheuper to bring It here
than to take it to Uingen, aa the loca
tion ot tbe Hood station is inacoess
able from the White Salmon valley.
The improvement Club at Under
wood ia holding eatbusiastio meetings
twice a month, aud doing much good.
A local baseball association bas been
formed, wbiob ia making amusement
(or the lovers of this sport. Sunday
a game was played at Husuni, but the
club met their second defeat for the
season, tbeUusum club being tbe via
tors. Ibe White Snlmoq team was
also on band to contest with tbe win
ner, and the Husum team won tbe
second t me Tbe return game will
be played at Underwood. A basket
aoulal and dance given at Smith's bail
Saturday eveuiog, for tbe benefit of
tbe club, netted $55.50 from tbe sale
of baskets.
Tbe work on the abutment of tbe
bridge across Wbito Siilmon is belug;
finished this week, aud ready for the;
heavy travel of tbe road. j
The J. N. Teal, Capitol City and,
Dalles City boats are now making
regular stops at Undei wood aud will
be able to take care of some of the
berry business which cannot be
bandied by tbe railroad.
Mr. John Rilm, of Vining, la., says:
"I have been selling DeWitt a Kklne '

they give better siiticfaition than any
pill I ever sold." Sold by Keir & Cass.
