Kecut attar mauj long monthi la in atora tor Frederick Jell, son of Mr. aud Mrs. W. J. Jeffs, formerly of Taooma, bat no of Victoria, 11. O., who la maroooad on Indefatigable Island, ona of tba Uala- Ssgos group, off the wast ooast of outidor. Admiral Evans baa reoelrad orders from the nsvj department to send a hlp to rescue this sailor. Fred Jeffs is 27 years of age. It was when Mr. Jeffs was in bnsiness In Taooma that Fred began bis acquaint ance with the sea oaptalns and other officers wbiob finally resulted in bis going to sea. After being away sev eral yeara be returned to Taooma and for some time be was with the Con nelly Shoe Company on PsolHo ave nue. Later be went to Hood River, Or., to manage a boot and shoe store. Then again the longing for the sea re turned and be went as mate on a ship bound for Australia. A brother, George, was drowned ou the ill-fated steamer Clallam some four years ago, as be waa returning to Victoria from a visit to bis brother, a J. Jeffs, at Olympia. The latter Is now manager of the boot and shoe de partment in the People's Store, Ta ooma, and another brother, William Henry, Is marine engineer ou oue of the aceamers plying twUnen Ban Franolsoo and China, and still miotbei brother, Albert Viotor, Is nuuitiger of marine boiler works at Portlxuil Jeffs, who was working bis way back to the United States, after hav ing seen the better part of the world, shipped on the Norwegian baik Alex andra, of Chrlttlanla, wbiob aailed from Newoastle, Mew South Wales, on Novembor 26, 1906, for Panama, with a cargo of ooal aboard. After having been beoalnied ' for many days and the supply of water threatening to give out, Captain 1& Patterson, the skipper of the Alexan dra, on May 8, ordered the boats lowered and an. attempt whs made to land at Charles Island of tba Uala pagoa grodp. Owing to the strong Antarctlo cur rent, a landing oould not be effected, and in endeavotlog to locate Chat ham Island, another of toe Ualapagos Islands, the water supply gave out entirely, compelling the crew of nine men to seek refuge on Indefatigable Island. To find water on a voloanlo Island, where there is none except during tba rainy aeason. is not an easy task, and when drinkable water was at last found in a cave, the orew discovered that their boats were lost and they nnnld not return to their bark. For two months the stranded marin ers lived on pelicans, tortoises, Ig uanas, orabs and various aea foods. While there is thick vegetation In parts of Iodefatigable, one of the larg at islands of the Oalnpaaos arohlpel Baa. for the most cart it la oovered with lava and oaotua Is theprlnolpal plant life. It Is the borne of a speci men of iguana peoullar to the Gala nsBoa Islands. This animal is of the lizard family and the specimens to be found on these Paolflo Islands are the only animals of their kind tojlive In the water as well as out or it. That Jeffs was not rescued ftora the island with his comrades was evl dently due to Illness, wbioh caused him to refuse to ioin the other mem bers of the party when they changed their camp from the west side of the Island to the eastern shore. In bis reoort. after being rescued. Captain Patterson tells of the way in wbiob Jeffs waa left behind. "Some of our men." be says, "found a cove on the east ooast of the Island, which they called 'Trapper's Cove.' and which they thought would be more likely to be In the view of passing ships, as vessels plying be tween other islands of the group and Guayaquil passed the eastern side of the Indefatigable in following their course. All but Sailor Fred Jells agreed to so to the new camp, and we left him, after using every possible means to urge him. Xhinklng that Jeffs would decide to follow us, we left him a bag of provisions, some turtle and built him Are. After many days of bard walking over the Bharp rooks and atones we arrived at the new chmD." By questioning the members of the orew after they were rescued, the American vloe-ooneul at Guayaquil learned that Jeffs had been suffering from pleurisy and that his companions. weakened from lack of water and pri vation, had been unable to carry him over the treaoheroua country between the east and west ah ores. The Gala pagos Islands ate tbe home of the laigest tortoises known to exist, many measuring more than three feet in length, and it waa neoessary for the stranded party to tight these creatures by day and barrioade themselves at night. The Noiwegian ooosulate, having learned that the bark Alexandra was supposed to have been abandoned in tbe waters surrounding the Galapagos Islands, sent the Bolandia Isldra Ja ointa from Guayaquil, under com mand of a German captain, Bohnboff, who found tbe orew of tbe abandoned ship on Ootober 28. Not having sutfloleni provisions to permit of tbe men returning to find Jeffs, Captain Bobnhoff decided to pass along tbe western shore of tba Island on tbe way to Guayaquil Here again tbe Antarc tic ourrent proved too strong for tbe vessel and severe storm made it ut terly impossible tor tbe skipper t follow out bis plans, so that tbe efforts to locate Jeffs bad to be abandoned. Of the nine men wbo bad originally landed on Indefatigable Island, but seven were resoued f y the skipper of the Isadra Jacinta, Sailor Martin I Sobaetfer having died cn tbe Island, sapfxwdly killed by turtles. His ! skeleton had been Identified by tbe otbeis from the shoes ne wore, me ninth man was Jeffs, and to find him, living or dead, a ship of the United States navy will be dispatched to In defatigable lsiana, an almost o- I used an I you derive no benefit. ! money will be returned. Tbe animal life on inese ibuiikjb is peculiar and many expeditions have been made for tbe purpose of studying tbe various specimens to be found there. On Indefatigable Island mois ture seems to be more scaroe than ou tbe other islands of the aroblpelugo, and tbe turtles that is, tbe land tortoises-rely on tbe giant oaolus plants 01 moisture. The waters surrounding Indefatig able Island are extremely dangorou-s 0 log to ths large number ot reels and aboals and the swift currents, many of wbiob do not appear on the cbarta. The artlole is illustrated with views of tbe grade ana or doio portais of the Cape Horn tunnel, in sum ming up bis observations on tbe work be says : "It is believed that no other road In the United States, men when the conditions for eaay construction are miioh more favorable, has such light grades and curves for such a length aa this one. The fact that there are no adverse grades at all between Ken newlck and Vancouver for west bound trains will allow trains ot enormous weight to be hauled in this direction Tbe exceedingly rigid requirements and high standards used In construe tlon mulled to a oountry of tbe rug eed character traversed by this road. have resulted in very costly work. No expense has been spared to make everything of tbe best and the needs and more riuld standards ot tbe fu ture In the railway world have been anticipated tor many years." Mr. Hardesty points out that tbe high price of labor and materials have resulted In a very expensive roan. He says that for miles at tbe stretch tbe cost will average over 1100,000 a mile and will sometimes reach 8150, 000. ffiThat the construction of tbe S. P, 3c S. Rv. is possibly the most impor taut niece ot railroad woik carried on in the United States during 1907 Is tbe editorial opinion of the Eugi ueerlng Newa, given in tbe same mini bar. ibe editorial points out that tbe Hill lines will be able to get away from the steep grades over tbe Cas oade mountains on the Northern Paolflo and Great Northern, tbe form er crossing the range at an elevation of 2827 feet and tbe Great Northern climbing to an elevation ot 3380 feet while each road has grades as steep as 2.2 per oent la its ascent ot the mountains. "In tbe entire distance of 20 miles along tbe valley of the Columbia,' continues tbe editorial, "there Isabno. lutelv no rising grade against west bound traffic and foreastbound traffic the maximum grade is ouly U.2 per oent or lOW feet per mile. The total rise in the 220 miles la only 324 feel Notwithstanding that the line is com polled to follow the narrow valley of tbe river, maximum ourvage has teen reduced to 3 per oent. That such a toad will permit enormous train loads and very low cost of hauling and will have great tratUo oapacity can he eou at a glance." Catarrh Cure, Cooper's XIne C. There are thoeanuds of people who suffer with Catarrh, but do little or no thing to remove the dread disease. This neglect permits the disease to inflame the Mucus Membrane and may affect the nose, throat, lungs, stomach, bowels or bladder. Cold aggravates Catarrh and if allowed to become chronic it leads to Bronchitis and also to Consumption. Fully forty per cent of the deaths in America are from diseases of the air passages. Use the Nine C's and be cured. It is also a sure cure for Croup. Brouchitis, Colds and LaGripne. If has announced his oandidncy for the Pemnnrntio nomination for congrc.-s from the second district.
