At the pectaT school eleotlon last Friday there were 74 otea cast in favor of bonding the district to build a new school bouse and U against. While there was a light vote cast, yet it was tnticn larger than that usually cast at school elebtions. Sufficient funds have been piovided to build a One bluh school building of twelve rooms, in addition to retiring the outstanding school bonds. Wblie it adils to the debt of the oommunity, it is one of the best investments we can make. Good schools are necea sarv to the prospeiity of any place end Hood Elver will keep pace with the most progressive cities In this re gard. - lue Commercial Club banquet last Friday evening was probably the Isrg est of its kind ever given In Hood River. Compared with the oooaslon of a year ago, it was over double In size. It was the Intention of the ottl- oers of the club to limit the number In attendance only to the seating ca puulty if the hall and the largest ball in the city was engaged (or the pur pose. Ibe result! of the banquet have amply repaid the elforts of the man agement, aa well hi the expense, and thia Bunnnl event will be made a feat ure ot the organization in this city. Hood Kiver is proud to meet the emi nent mea of the state in the city and glitd to have them with ua on these oooaeions. Ibe publicity given to the event, and. to Hood River in gen eral, ou aocouL't of the banquet, again heralds our advantages to the world and la but an Incident In the work of the Commercial Club lu its efforts to work for a greater Hood River. Comments of Looker-on. The special services at the M. E. Church were ended last Thursday night with grant success. Dr. Lathrop when Interviewed by oar reporter said that be bad never been in;a oiiurob where they gave bim suou loyal support as they did bere and be was verv muoh pleased with the results. During the meeting 47 were added to the church and since Ucto ber, when Dr. Lathrop came, 61 have joined the church. The servloes .are made very interesting to both the abrlstlau and unbeliever and the ser mous are oilap, ireBh, breezy thoughts that somehow or other atilke a man right at the heart and stay there and din'tdioo otf. The Sunday sobool is taking on new vigor and last Sun dav 100 were iresent. iney nave oood corns of ushers at the door and everyone who goes Into the church is grasped by tLe band and told "to come bhbIu." If a stianger feels blue anil lonesome after he leaves, is his ovu iuult, because no one b i Has auv tlaM to complain of oolduess af ter the cordial treatment be receives at the ohuroh. The company that las been formed to pu: lu the oleotrio light plant will pnt In a large pluut to tuinixh power for other industries and there will be other industries that will need power all right. The proprittors of the meat market bave organized a com pany to put in an Ice plant and we uuderftand this company has pur chased property on which tc locate tbe plant. A capitalist was up from fortlaud a few days a.-o to we about building a trolley line from tbe dook via the depot to Wblta Salmon, aud made tbe proposition tbat if our citi zens would take iOOOO worth ot stook it would be put in. Tbe amount was subscribed in balf aj hour. It ceema at this time that all these improve ments are act rally assured to us and tbat tbey will actually be put lu dur ing tbe cuu.fng summer. With these improvements completed aod some work on the sdee a, wbiob must be doue anyway, White Salmon will be a fairly up to date town in anotbei year. Not ouly are these Improve ments to be made duriug tbe next year, but the town a goiug to hate a more rapid growth than ever before. At leant too new stores, tarrying diflere t lines ot goods from any we now have, will bo estuhlisbed here in the neai future, to or more new brick hulliiiiivs aro now assured. With all then- tlili.gs in eight and tbe completion oi tbe North Rank rail road near at baud, tbe future looks very bright to the people of this oom munity, lu spite ot tbe ptedictloua of hard times, which seem likely to be verified in tbe ori-t rn part of tbe country. In fact this place bag but little to fear from a peilod of depres sion, even should it extend over the uotthwest, wbiob seems unlikely. Agricultural regions, and especially fruit sections, are always tb least affected by such occurrences. . There la ulways a beavy demand for high class fruit, and White Halmou pro ducer the best tbat cau be rained. As the town is supported by tbe great vulley behind it, there is no duugi r of a slump in real estate, or a oenaa'ioo of building activity here. In f.ict it looks aa though White Sal mon is going to bave a more rapid giowtb than evei before duviug tbe coming spring and summer, and many of our optimistic oltlzeus con fidently predict tbat th population of tbe town will reach tbe oue thous and mark before another year, and tbat in a short time it will become what its natural advantages and tbe progressive spii It of its citizens en titles it to be tbe metropolis of the north bank. White Salmon will be the first town of iU size In this sec tion to bave a first-class electric light system and should tbe trolley line to the depot be built, wbiob it undoubt edly will in another year or so at lend, we will bave transportation fa ilitloi far superior to any other plaoe along tbe liver. Mtb all these things in sight there is no reason to feel penalmisliu aud the number ot knock ers in tbe oommunity ii growing steadily less. Knterpiise.
