L. H. HUGGINS (& CO. tnssr. ON WAY HOME FROM MEXICO. 20. Ki Fato, Texas, Jan Kditor Ulaoler: After a week's atay In Mexico City bere we are back In Uncle Sara's coun try once more and very glad Indeed to b bere, though there la macb of Interest to be - seen In Mexico. I hardly know b iw or where to begin to describe the many interesting places we visited doring oar sbort stay. A person could well pot in two or eren three weeks constantly on the go and tben not visit all bietorlo points in and aronnd Mexioo City. To as it was indeed a foreign land. The people and their mode ot living, their eostoma and language made you realize at once that yon were in a strange land. Mexico City ia a very clem oity, the rooier class being employed in sweep ing and sprinkling the streeta by band. The atreets are very narrow, bat what an army of workmen it takes to even tben keep tbe streeta of a tlty clean in toot niauner. You do net e large sprinkling carts. Once in a while there is a unal! one in tbe out vina districts, bat tbe greater por tion of tbe whole city Is sprinkled by men and boys by throwing buckets of water, scattering it as much as posit hie when emptying the pail. Some times a box wagon oarrlea tbe water which is banded out by tbe pail full, Other places they din water from sort ot atone reservoir or from a ditch I'belr markets are great places, too. There you go every morning to get your day's supplies.' - People there we met say you buy only cne day's pro vUlons at a time. You see everything ' is in little piles, say three or four potatoes, five or six tomatoes, a band ful of nuts, a small phe ot bnans or Deas aud so on. They ask one, two or five cents for each pile, as tbs prices may be. Esga are never eold bv the dozen, but so ruuoh an euu It Is a great sight; everything being found in these markets food, now era. potttirv. cheap laoes and cotton piece goods. - Their exclusive flower market is beautiful. If you go early all kinds of flowers, a buuob of per baps 20 of tbe most beautiful roses for II Mexican money. DO cents our money; violets, bunob as large as you can ffiaap. for 10 cents Mexican We visited what they call "the thieves market," where they olulm everytblug in it waa stolen. We would uaU it a "junk shop," but if you Nad any thing you waut it costs next to no thing, Then there ia the government niwn shop. The government loan money on any artiole you wish to na n. If not redeemed in ao many mouths the articles are sold, liere you can, If you are a good judge, get diamonds, jewelry, eto;. down to fur nlture and dishes at very reasonable ratea. They bare some very large tiusluess bouses in every line, mostly Pieoob. Uermnn or Spanish. Thoy all olose from 12 uutll 3 o'clock to take tbnii afternoon siesta, tben open until 8 in tbe evening. We visited some of tbelr old churches, some of which were built bv the Azteu Indians. They are beau tilnlly carved and deoorated in solid gold and xllver. The ohapel of Uaud alupe they call the Holiest of Holy shrines in tbe Catbollo world. Mere their people ome by thousands to worship and drink from tbe ever boil lug spring ot pure olent water which ourea all Ills and whoever is In Mexico and drinka from that fountain la ame to return. Th guide who took us through told us tbe very beautiful In dian legenda concerning tbia much' worshiped Saint Uaudalupe. We vis Iltod Cbapultepeo castle built by the .Atteca In wblob every ruler of Mexico fees lived from Montezuma, Uortez aud Alaximllliau down to President Diaz, who, people tell you, is virtually king of the Mexloan republic This ;oaie Is. of oourse. beluu kept in nioderu repair, but tbey claim It ia the old castle with Improvements. In tbs grounds we were shown Montezuma' bath tub, a large stone tank eonnact tad by a subterranean passage with tbe losstle ;jalso tbe well where be drowned bis wife and many tbiugs en to snow tie was ciuel ruler, tit til bis people see oj to revere bis memory and they seem to never tire in pointing out beautiful statuary that whs once Mux iuilllian's. .The national palaoe Is only open to foreigners on Sundays and only to those having permits nh tsined through a consul. A frleud obtained one fromlhe tJermnu consul, took as with a few otbets through. nr friend speaking Spanish, making it very interesting. The tornlsbiugs of gold and silver table servioe and cut glass with tbe Mexican oout of arms on each and eveiy pleoe is simply 4i aud beyond description. We were t. j fortunate to be in the oity Sbriu rs' week, to whom and their wives .'i0ideot Diaz gave public reoep tlum held in th palace, lie received Chess in a body, this welcomo being Mordsd in Spanish, the high poteu f ite answering In English, alter which every one passed by and was shaken hands with Jby President Diaz with a Mordtoeack In Spanish. You must r hum re gloves to grasp bia majesty's Liifiii. Taking it all together our Mftk there waa one eeastant round of Kilttasure, ending on Wednesday by a trip to tbe snoient pyramids, wbiob they claim are prehistorio, aud pa Wednesday evening a grind bail waa given to the hrlners and their ft lends only and waa Indeed pretty Might, tbe ladies being beautifully gowned. We were limply, wltb many other, spectators. On Thursday an exnursioo for Shriners and friends to Jnfrmavaca, celebrated as tbe ahid au, f l oe of a clock which waa pre peutet) io Coitez by King Cbailea the j Fifth, of Spain, and win i luced In the tower o' a church begun in 152!). when finished costing over one milllco dol lars., On Thursday evening we left tbe jlty, stopping at Aguafoalientes, noted for its hot epilogs aud baths; bIbo as tbe home of tbe drown wmk wbioh we all admire so union. We were at one fsctory, we would o il it, where tbey do tbe most beautiful oik. it makes the ladies lxh they emild take a oar load home wltb them. We tm rled only one lity aud ulght. leaving on Saturday morning and arriving 1 1 El Pa-40 on Sunday afternoon, utur getting through the custom house in spection, tired, dusty and hungry, aud oh, ao glad to be once more un der our own flag's protection. 11 llo to Hood Klter.
