HOOD RIVER GLACIER THURSDAY. JANUARY 9-. tPPR. Pf NEW SWITCHBOARD BEING INSTALLED Ibe ne mitchboai J, powei board and telephones aud other electrical apparatat tor tb- Home Telepbooe Co. were reoiveJ last week and ex pert! from the factories are busy in itttllinu it iu tbe new telephone build ing and expect to tte able to have it ia compl te service in tbe next few weeks. Ibe switchboard ia known aa a Lamp Line Signal Full Relay Cut 09 Multiple Central Energy switch board, and wag deaignated by W. J. lirownell, K. K., and built by tbe Strom berg-Carl: n Telephone Manu factured Co., rf Kocbester, N. Y. Ibis firm ia tbe la.'goat manufacturer of telephone apparatos in the world and tmuUbra the government with lta telepbouea, and has recently in stalled systems in the royal palace at St. Petersburg. Tbe Hood Kiver board ia one of Ibe latent boards that bail been built and closely follows tbe lines of tbe new board thut ia now be ing installed in Seattle. Ibe operat ing gTitoui is simplicity itself. When a subscriber removes tbe receiver from tbe switobbook it lights a small inoandesoent light on the operator's pi-sition and be u greeted by "Num ber". On giving tbe number, tbe girl completes tbe conneetion and in stantly rings the subtcriher be has called for. lu other wurds, in five seconds from tbe time be has started tbe call, bis party is ruog. whlcb will irive the Hood Kiver people very rap id telephone servii.t When tbe party rung dinners the rail, a light from I lie telephone flashes for a moment, LiOtifying tho operator that tbe party is answeriuu When both receiver are hung up. the lights HbhIi again and remain lit;!. ted uutil the operator bas taken dowu the collection. Ibis gives tbe operator complete snpervibion without having to I tten to a router satiou ; enabling a Miberibei to get ten parties, one utter the other, us rapidly as be secured tbe Urst one. The telephone of tbe new company have no batteries and eaoh phone re ceives its electrio energy from tbe central oflicu This is accomplished by storage batteries. A complete charging set and powerbnard is in stalled iu the reut.vil (ftioeaudthe batteries charged there. Ibis goes much better service than under tbe old system of battori s in the phones for tbe reason that eaoh phone re ceives tbe same amount of energy and, consequently nil phones "talk" alike. The selective ringing on tbe party line pbon s is a very ingenious invention, and Is cBlled a converter This runs in different cycles. The bells on the phones are wound to oorrrespoud with these cycles, so that the operator wuy teleot the cur rent and ring ouly the phone called. This will do away with the continu ous riuging of bells, as undei previ ous condition. Miss Susan Oeitry, ot Minneapolis, has arrived in the city and will be placed iu entire charge of tbe service. Mi as Ueary bas been chief operator on one of tbe large eastern plunt9 for several years, and ber name is a sirHicierjt guarnntee for good service. A number of features will be installed in tbe new system, wbicb will certain ly meet wito the approval of tele pbooe usors ot Hood Kiver. tor in stance, a morning call system will be inaugurated, wbereby the subscriber oan be called every morning at a cer tain time; or, it ho wishes to be called for a certain train, bis tele phone will ring continuously, ringing until the subscriber answers, thus as suring tbe operator that be must be awake. A new Western Union clock is being iu BUlled and Western Union time will be furnished the sn beer i hers at an? time that you wish to ask for it. Au arrangement bus been completed with the O. K. & N. and Mt. Hood railroad companies n hereby tbe arrival and departure of all traine will be given the central office, so that the sub scriber ran always ascertain how lute his train is by simply asking central. Ihe loccation of Urea will also be giv en and tbe operators will be fully posted on current happenings, so that tbe telepboue will practioaliy be a bu reau nf information in conjunction with its aerv.ee. Messrs. Darley and Schluter, from Rochester, N. Y., are the inttallers that have been sent from the tactory to instill the apparatus and are rueh ing their work to an early completion. The construction work in tbe city is piactically Unified, and is what is known aa a Multiple Cable Top eys tern, doing away with dangerous wires. One block ot under ground bas been put in and cable installed in it, and the cable splicers will arrive in the next ten days to complete the work. Every telephone man who has seen this plant, pronounced it to be a model plant, and Manager Urnwnili expects i,o derive considerable reputa tion from its building. Our citizens can teel juetly proud of the at; u ici tion of this plant for tbe reason that every dollar of its stock is held in Hood Kiver and C3 stockholders live iu the city and its immediate vicini ty, so that exoelleut service is as sured. Tho company expeeu 1 1 In Id a pubiio reception on tbe ooiur.letiun ot installation and expect to entertain their subscribers at that time. nil) Suffer from Rheumatism?
