THE HOOD RIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1907. Five WHEREABOUTS STILL A MYSTERY Tb March for John llamann baa dmd ooaaooeaafuL Friday morning Hairy Draper'a blood b iUndt arrived from Spokaoa ana loursaav DigDi Andy Vaogbao broogbt op bia voang boanda Irom Portland. Ibe latter were taken in tbe direction ot tbe east of town wbere man waa reported loiteiing around farm bouse, They did not piok up any trail tbat nlgbt and weie taken back and pat op for tbe nigbt. Ibe next morning both pair ot hoanda were taken out and appeared to pick op a trail very aoon. Xbey followed it down aorosa tbe Button farm and over to tbe terry landing, wbere the dogs went out on me nat boat stationed there. Soourins tbe neighborhood Draper'a dogi followed a trail t'j tbe old barn ot tbe Oregon Lumber Co., ami then op tbe ateep inoline of tbe mountain loutb and over tbe top of it. They tben circled arouud and came back to tbe acow again. No Tib er trails wete picked op ty tbe doge, and tbia led to tbe belief by many tbat tbe missing man was in tbe riv er. All day Friday and Saturday a large posse of men scoured tbe country for several miles in tbe vloinity of tbe river, duc nothing came 01 it. As Is uiual, many rumors came in of seeing something tbat looked like a clue, but after being followed tbey developed nothing. Ibe only thirg picked up was a lead pencil and near by a ttone with a few drops of blood on it, which was (bough1; to indioate that tbe nian tad passed that way. The pencil was said by Mrs. llamann to be like one her husbaud carried. It waa thought the blood ou tbe stone niigbt have been oaused by a nosebleed or wound, and gave the searching party hope of aoon Hading the unfortunate man, but like all other clues, ended in failure. Hatuidav tbe entire mill crews of White Sal'nou joined in tbe search, and there were fully 250 men making a systematic bnni through the gulch es, thickets aud mountains. Saturday afternoon Cbarlle John sou, an Indian, came in and reported seeing a uiau in tbe mountain a oou pie of miles east of town, and the bounds weie taken to tbe ptaoe in company with the Indian. Alter bunting arouud (or a couple of hours no tiail was picked up and tbe bunt was abandoned. Ihe Draper bounds were taken borne Saturday evening and Andy Vaugbau went to Poitlaud Sunday at ternoou with bis dogs. Ibe river iu tbe vicinity of the boat lauding was dragged all day Sat urday aud part of Sunday, but noth ing was found, tbat would give any clue. Ibe result of tbe investigation has thrown no light on Mr. tiamann'a disappearance. While many have loimed an opinion as to what became ot him, yet there is nothing to do but wait for developments. A Thanksgiving Appeal. To those who ate acquainted with tbe methods and tbe good work ac complished bv the Boys' and Girls' Aid society iu rescuing and caring for dependent and deliuquent children ot the state, it is unnecessary to say anything but tbat the sooie'.y needs Ibe assistance of tbe publio at 1'bauksUvlug, but as there may be many who have not studied the work or bad occasion to know ot some of tbe good accomplished, it would be well to say tbat this suoiety Is located in tbe city ot Poitland but cares foi all children throughout tbe state ot Oregon who are in need. Ibe society has never been known to refuse ad mission to any child provided it is bualtby and oue Unit can be placed out iu a private home. Neither bin it refused to accept auy boy or girl who through incorrigibility haa ren dered himself beyond the ooutrol of his parents and for whom at au eurly date tbe iefoim sbool, 01 worse, the penitentiary, would open its doors. But In ordei to defend this class and keep them from a penal institution, the BoyV and Girls' Aid society's agent comes along sad takes the boy or girl iu charge and retains bis cut tody until tbey have ascertained i( there is any chance for refotmutiou, and If so the child is directed iu the right path and so saved from haviug tbe disgrace of being committed to a penHl institution. But if it is found, on tbe other bund, tbat the child is a degenerate and Its association with other children is burtlul, tben it is plaoed in some institution organized for the purpose of caring for that class of children. The society has on its flies at Port laud, Otegon, 3253 cases that It bas bandied and cared for during tbt per iod of its existence. It is suppotted bv Stat" and county aid and charita ble contributions, aud at this time of the vear It is reaobiuu out and asking every person who is a friend to tbe institution or to destitute children to nut their hands in their pockets and make a small donatiou of money or to send to tlx home in Poitland, Uro- canued fruit, vegetables, or anything tbat would be u-eiul in tne nouse hold. At everv count? seat there is au Pd vlsory board, whose business it is tc look attei tbe interests ot tbe society and its wards, who are pl -ced out iu family homes. In this county Ed Hostetler, The Ddres, Ore., Is the secretary, and any person who bas anything to-douute can Bud out where to deliver the same by phoning to this add less. Ibe railroad companies and steam boats throughout tbe state have on operated with tbe society so far as to say that tbey will deadhead all sup plies sent to them from any source during Thanksgiving. Therefore, it is hoped tbat this city and county will at least do thei share (or the good of tbe little ones wbo are depen dent on charity for support. railroads put Oregon In touch with tbe world, and apple growing waa re vived with tbe very satisfactory re sults shown by tbe apple fairs which for th part few years have been held in various sections of tbe state. Tbe friendly rivalry developed be tween apple growers of various sec tions acts as an industrial and busi ness tonic Now llood Kiver srowers come forwsid with a display of apples grown in mat section wnieb oballeng ea competition : again YambiU ooun ty, and yet again Linn, challenge tbe state, not to mention tbe world, to beat tbe apples that tbey prodaoe, backing up tbe challenge by samples from their orchards tbat are boldly declared to be tbe "best." A little acrimony cornea In now and tben, bat ail tonios are somewhat bitter, benoe the value of this one Is not impaired. Finally, all "show apples" are sent to Portland, or should be if tbey are not, and tbe ball wbere tbe State Horticultural society meets in annosl convention is redolent of tbe spioy odors of old-fasbloned garrets and cellars wbere apples yeaia agone were stored foi winter use. Oregonian. How to Become Rich. In order to become riob it is neces sary merely to follow tbe perfectly simple procedure of auy king ot fi nance, lhus : Borrow all the money you can upon the property you already own. with tbe money buy more property. Combine tbe two properties, float a loan, and with tbe money bay third property. Merge tbe three properties, use the merger si security for a loan, and with the money bay another large property. Consolidate tbis with tbe others. seleot a board of directors, and au thorize yourself to float twine aa much stook as there is. Sell this stock, and with the money buy five or six more properties. Organize a holding company wblob will oarry tbe stocks of all tbe properties. You are new so wealthy and influen tial that you do not need' to make any more loans. Increase the stock ot your proper ties aud Bell bonds upon them. Authorize yourself to boy ever thing in sight with this money. Now you will bave control ot eveij-j tliioir: also you will have tbe say so in a-iy number of subsidiary companies aud a controlling voloe in eigne or nine insurance companies and nation al banks. After tbis there doesn't seem to te much for you to do except to get tbe dyspepsia, get bnld and prattle gently about tbe excellence ot motal rf' verbs.
