THIS HOOD BIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY, HOVEMBER H, 1907. FAVORS POSTAL SAVINGS BANKS Poit master General George ton L. Meyer was tbe guest of honor at ttia banquet of tbe lodiutiial club of Chi oatjo iat week. Lie gave bia views re gardlng postal Improvements, inolud lug establishment ol postal aariagi fcanks aud the extension of tbe par osli post syst- oi, wbion be will rec ommend to oongresa In hia annaal re port. lie said the postotfloe department during tbe past tlsoal yeai sent to En rope tbe wonny of immigrants to tbe extent of 71 UUO.UUP. He estimate! tbe auiouut m money in tbe United States at :i, 123,1150,673. of which II, 010,710,' 00 ih iu tbe Uriks. 1X0,850,. 153 is iu ILe tieasuiy, and tbe bal ance, l,778,0Ul (i'JO In tbe bauds of individuals and other places. "For a strikiug illustration of tbe value of a putlal sariim bank, take tbe pieseul time," bhij Mi. Meyer. "Many aiuaii ucoouuts uuve beea witbdiawn troui national binds, liust oonipHuiia aud savings banks bv.tiund depi siors, aud the money bas gone In to tb strong box or into biding On occasions like these what people want is absolute teounty. Alttr tbey with draw their mouey tbey dread loss from tboft oi by Hre, bat tbey do not; lose oontideuce iu tbe seourity of tbe government or it pledges. i'beiefore tbe small accounts referred to would flow Into the postal savings bankiand would be lud bank into ine channels of trade by being deposilei Iu tbe na tionul banks iu I bote communities, to tbe great advantage of labor and iu distry. "When a crisis bad passed aud con Hdeuce bud been testored, tbe money would be returned to tbe savings banks, because in tbe postal savings banks it would receive only about bait the Interest paid by savings banks If tbe mouey is withheld from national banks or trust companies, it loses the benefit of being drawn by check, nor, if deposited in a postal savings bank, can the depositor re ceive aooomojodati'in iu tbe way of a loan or tbe acceptance of bankable paper. In other words, tbe postotllce department is not going into tba banking business. It desirs only to encourage thrift to offer an acoessilile and safer form of depositing savings by naturalized oitizens and foreigners as well as by our people living in out of tho way places." Mr. Meyer said In conclusion be believed the need for both parcels poet and postal savings banks would be reoognized by congress this year. Why Tra le at Home J Why should people trade at home? Is it duty? Is it loyalty to institu tions which calls people to suoh deeds and such consistent actions? Or is it merely a fetish to bold trade from drifting elsewheie?, We think (be trade at home princi ple is based on something more. It has for its basis self interest. With out borne trade tbe individual would suffer. However, it is tbe way with most people to accept a general prin ciple but make themselves exoeptione, arguing that tbeir actions will make very little difference, because tbey are few while the rest are many. We have round a very loyal and en tbusiastio supporter of borne trading in tbe person of a man who lives in a growing suburb of Portland. Mot on ly does he believe in pationiziug borne iulustiies, but he bas thought it all out aud decided jmt why, lor bis own sake, us well as for tbe sake of other?, ho should do bis buying at hume. :. Ibis is his reesoning : - "Do I buy at home? I should say 1 do. Why? liecause I help myself by doing it, I suppose. How? Well, 1 thought it Ml out long ago. "Suppose everybody in Portland sent to Chicago or some other city foi all their goods : before long all tbe stores would go oui of business. Then the big wholesalers would have to cut down if they didn't quit altogether. Tbe people wbo found work formerly could not find it auy more and would have to eo somewhere else, and Poit land would grow smaller faster than she has grown large. "And tbe same thing ii true of ev ery community. There is a store within two blocks of my bouse. There Is another five blocks away. I give most of my trade to the nearest store because 1 want it 1 1 stay right there. It is haudy, tbe store is a good littfe store and tbe man wbo iudh it Is a first class fellow. There's no use talk log. he does gut a little more for big goods tbaa some cf tbe places down town, bat 1 am willing to pay a cent more here and there for the sake of supporting him aud doing my abaie toward beeping turn right where he is. It's w.irth it to me and my neighDorp, " 1 hat store helps my property, and it is almost a necessity at time. Do you think I would give it tbe scraps of inv trade and do tbe bulk of it elsewhere? No sir, that's not right f ha heloi me I'll help him all I can. I'd rather trade in Oregon than in other -tateo; I'd rather trade in Port lund than other oities, oil my street than on otbpr streets aud iu my near neighborhood than els-where because the business neatest me helps me most. That's what I call trading at home, and it is right. When asked if be did no trading down town be leplied that be did on ly wben be believed tbe neighborhood nraa were presuming that fiey were sure of his trade and neglecting him or selling too high. "The possibility of tiading elsewhere is just a check uu the notue t-tores, and that's all 1 ever tbink of it But I've not bad to dn mnch of it." In this man's reasoning lies a great deal of truth. For the sake oi the community in which you live, for tbe sake of voui family, your propeity and yourself it is best to trade at hnnm when it is possible. And it ii also well to remember that everyone helps to make up tbe whole. 1'iades man. LI-NiiERIAU COLD Withstood Other Treatment But Quickly Cured by Chamberlain's Congh Remedy.
