If we hiil o Ihm(!iiih all tbe yeur such as we bate i:i bitfb water wbeie tbe boat come right np to our doors, and a coin :i. odious dook where height and paM-ieugt-r tr. lilo could be bandied ex pedi! iouelj , it would mean much to ub aa a rity. The impression tbat the tourist baa of Hood River when tbe hoata laud at tbe present mad bank dock, is not one tbat will enhance the prestage of our valley to any great ex tunt, and tbe number of people that daily travel the river who would rath er come ueie to do their trading if they could do eo without having to walk or ride mile through tbe duit or mud, and who rather than do so go ou up to Tbe Dalles to do their trad ing, is a matter to be seriously con sidered, ns it means thousands of dol lars goiug right paiit out doors year ly, that we should have. Tbey say you have tbe goods and we like to come to your town to trade, but your tnat landing is so inoonvenient we can't do it. It seems to me tbat now is au opportune time to take this mat tor of dredging a channel up. Tbe north bank railroad Is deeply inter ested in tbe matter of freight ship ments from tbia point, and the only way these could be obtained to any extent would be through some acces sible souroe which does not exist at present. Tbey now have a dipper dredge working at the mouth of tbe White Salmon, that no doubt tbey would contribute toward tbe work, and tbat working in connection with a giant which could be connected witb Mr. Wilson's pipe line would do the work expeditiously and witb a mini mum of expense. Some will say tbe sand will fill in your channel and shoal it every year, tbat is tbe exper ience of tow boat men on tbe lower river who have constructed similar channels of ten times the length ot this one, and in instances where tbey have no swift running stream to turn into it as we have, but supposing that was trie case, could we not easily afford to spend a thousand dollars or moreeaob year to keep it in navigable condi tion? 1 am quite sure tbe people would answer utHrmntlvely after tbe first year of its use. This is a matter of great impoi tiuice to our city and 1 think it is well worthy of immediate consideiatiou for if we wish to get tbe aid of tbe nortb bank people we must act at onoe. 1 tbink it la a matter that the mayor and oounoil should recognize and as juob iu authority appoint a waterway commission who could take bold of tbe matter vigor ously and carry it out. J. S. Booth. Loiter from Mr. Van Denian. B. II. Shepard and E. L. Smith have received tbe following letter from W. E. Van Denian, at the James town exposition : "You may not know that I sm here judging tbe horticultural exhibits as I did at Portland, but I am doing it jmt the same. It was not my inten tion to do thii work, but to go to my hoie in the cool woods of New Voik; however the exposition management and the exhibitors begge'd me so bard that I would serve that I Dually de cided to come here and do as I have just stated. Now, I want you to oall a meeting, if necessary, or in some way interest your fruit association there and have a display ot fruit seut here tbe last week in September. Aa you may know, there is to be a meeting of tbe American Pomological sooiety here at tbat time and there ate always beau tiful fruit exhibits accompanying and under tbe direction ot a committee of tbe society. There are medals given for these exhibits and tbey are well worth contesting for and knowing tbat you have nucb abundant quanti ties of tine fruit 1 tbink it will be greatly to your advantage to make an exhibit here. It need not be specific but it should be thoroughly represen tative of your section. Vou would not need to send anyone with it but simply to send it bore nd have it planed ou exhibition iu the place that would be reserved for such exhibits Of oourse, we vould like to know if you are goiua to do this or not and about how union you would send in iidbii irnn rlanirlA t.ll Ho HO. I want to tell you tbe exposition is good ; 1 say very good ana very muuu better than tbe general impresdon, anri anv nf rmir neoole who may want to visit tbe eastern states should come down this way to visit tbe epxosition and at tbe same ti ne tbe national capital where every American oitizen should go once in bis life. The rates are cneap and I know that no one who makes tbe trip would regret it. I bave no objection to your putting this letter in your local paper if you so wish, or t making any use of it l.liQt Willi 1,1 hn tj tbe advantage of ycnr section or tbia corner of the world, yours very ituiy, II. On September 3 tbe Oregon delega tion to the national convention of tbe U. A. R. and W. It. C. started for Saratoga Springs, N. Y. From flood tfiver were Uen. S. r. ulytbe, wif and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Q. K. Castner, Mr. and Mrs. J. li. Kinsny and two children, Maurice and Katb ryne, Mrs. 11. II. Newel. At liiggs we wcie iiilned by Uen. 13. F. Pike and wife. Uen. Pike waa department commander of Oregou in 1901. Our department president ot tbe W. K. U , Mrs. Cora M. Davis, met us at Un ion, Ore. From Portland, Depart ment Color liearer A. C. Edmunds and daughter and Thomas Phelps. Mrs. M. Iborp, of Corvallis, second delegate to tbe national convention of W. K. U. Other people rrooi various points filled tbe car and every one wai congenial no chronic kickers. We were 40 minutes late into Ogden and upon arrival found our train bad left just 18 minutes before. Uen. filvtbe wired tbe superintendent at Salt Lake City and seemed an engine to take us on. We kept ictiug time, onoe on account of a (re gbt engine off tbe track, and when we teacbed Green Riper we were six hours Me. We passed tbiougb Grand Junctiou in dayliebt. This is tbe n. ted fruit section of western Colorado and for man? miles tbe country is level, i be area of land available for oultivatin i ia much larger than Hood River vi 1 ley. Tbe railroad passes ti. rough miles of apple, pear and peach or- obarda. The apple crop is light this year, only tbe Ben Davis appearing good. Pears are a light crop, and ao oasionally the effects of the blight are seen in the older orobarda. reaches failed entirely. Hundreds of acres of young oi chard, apples and peaches, are to be seen from the car window. The young trees are cultivated and ii rtgated from tbe start, tbe rills fol lowing tbe tree rows. Unlike Hood Kiver tbe urand junc tion fruit growers do not build palat lal country residences, nor maxe otn- er lasting improvements which makes tbe country look like ine people aiu not intend to stay long after tbey have made their pile. Good water for tbe city is piped from the bills, for house use on farms it is nueiea riom irrigating ditobes into cisterns. At Colorado Kpriugs tropical rrous sell cheap, but (or home grown, prices are way up. Apples, not wrapped. i ana o tier, sen ai co a box; retail at 5 oenta a piece. Annies iu market are mostly a yellow sweet apple and some Jonathans. Hood River Uravensteins, union paoK, would brine from W to $5 a box. We saw no first class apples on the fruit stands. Tbe population of Colorado Springs is 37,000. Tourist travel is rrado Sorinna 20 hours. We were droDned at 2:30 a. m. Sept. C. At 8:30 the fast mail would not take our car so Mr. and Mrs. Castner left us here in order to reach Saratoga on time. Tbe train would not care for all. Ibe remainder of our party took little side trips and spent a very pleasant dev. We left at 9:25 p. m. and bave been traveling on time ever since. Expect tc reach Chicago 10:40 Sunday.
