The doctor is one of the moat prominent horticulturists In tbe northwest. For a per'od of 10 yews be was tbe honored piesident of the Oregon State Horticultural society, and during his Inourobenoy proved a most efficient officer. Dr. Blalock was suooeeded In office by our townsman tbe Hon. E. L. Smith. At tbe present time the dnotor is devoating bis entire time and energy to the development ot tbe resources of Blalook Island. This island Is located a tew miles above Arlington In tbe Co lumbia river, and possesses an area of 4400 gores, Six hundred and fqrty aore of this territory is located on the Oregon side and the remainder on tbe Washington Side. In its piesent stage of development the doctor has 40 acres in orchard whioh is set prinolpaly to pe-toes and aprloots whioh have prov en a very proOtable crop for that lo cality. The situation of tbe island and obaraoter of the soil are oouduo ive to early vegetation. In addition to his large orchard be has at tbe present time 500 aorea in alfalfa, and is now making arrange ment! to sow auaiuuiiiu uruo. When this Held has been sown It v. ill be tbe largest alfalfa field in tbe west and we believe in the United bUtes. Tbe crops are irrigated by a pump- system wh'on nuas us aouro m hu rlr. The water is pumped up from the river by a new and economical system known as the "Gas Produoing System." This plant will supply an abundance of water for bis entire tiaot. , ' Dr. Blalook intends to stock his farm with the very best of bogs, and at tbe present time has 250 bead of tbe finest thoroughbred Berkshires obtainable.
