eood nnnsB olaoic thomsiwy, January 3, 1007 VALUABLE TRIPS ON MARKETING APPLES The New York I'm it frade Journal and Produce Kecurd publishes a pa per read by 11. M. Kingbbury, of tbe MiMourl Horticultural aociuty tba may prove ut iuterctt to growers liere as it giva some vuhmlile information ahout uia-UetiuK upiieg. r'rom Mr. KiDKabuiy'a pupor it can be seen that tbe Hen Davis is ttiil a very import ant factor in tbe apple (limineM in tbat state. Iho pupnr ia as (illos: Some time nine 1 received a letter from our worthy monetary, Mi. L. A. Uoodman, askiug me to write a pa per for t bis rxnelirig ou "Murketiug Apples" or tome kindred subject to be selected by me. At tbe time of re ceiving bis letter 1 was feeling pretty good, as 1 was junt winding up a very strenuous apple season, aod as apple, at tbat time were moving quite freely and prices getting better, I thought 1 oould see a successful close to a veiy unusul seasou. lieing in this frame of mind, 1 wrote to Mr. Uoodman that 1 would try to prepare a paper, and selected the eulijeot gi.eu above. If the subject is to be considered from tbe standpoint of tbe grower, at well as tbe dealer-and 1 think it should be it will be uecenary to be gin with early spring. First ot all, when the proper time. comes, spray your fruit. Cultivate your orobaid thoroughly and keep down vegetation. The most essential thing is to raise fruit of such quality thut it U deserv ing of a good market. As soon as y ur fruit crop is well set and apparently safe, you should take up the subject ot packages to be used. Uet the beet packages money will buy. It matters uot which you use barrels or boxes, or both. Tbey should be ot first chis material, and mak) an attractive package when pre sented to tbe consumer for their ap proval. Did you ever go to a fruit stand to buy a basket of peaohes and notice that one basket was made of tbe best material and bad a neat, tidy appear ance, showing cure in the packing, while another seemed to have a loose, eloucby look, as though it were only put together to reach trie marker. The fruit in the well made basket may not be quite as tine as the fruit in tbe other, but you will take it every time, ami if the qualtity of the fruit in both buhkets is tbe same, the sloucby look ing package will have to take a back seat and will not move until all tbe others have gone. So it is with apples. Make your package attractive. A message to the buyer tbat you bnve used care in packing and handling its conteuts. Ihe extra oust of a first class package is like bread cast upon the waters. It will tetuin to you utter many days, possibly an order for five or ten cars of fruit under your brand. After your packages are arranged for aud well under way, so tbey will be ready when needed, you should se lect your fruit. It you are a grower exclusively arid hare giveu our or chard the "square doal", this is a simple mutter, liut with the buyer it is not so easy. Orchard alter orchard must be vifiled. Memoranda should be made as to the fruit aud the ap proximate number of barrels of each variety in each orchard. Some or chards will bare to be passed up en tirely, while in others, only ceitain varieties can be packed. When you have gotten a line on the fruit in tbe section iu which you are operating, open up correspondence witb the buyers in sections of tbe oountry iu which you expect to find a market. Let them know just what you ex pect to have to olfer, aud when you will be ready for business. Let them understand tbat you expect to han dle nothing but first class stock, put up in i.Hrst. class shape. Make your letters short and to the poiut. Carry conviction to tbe buyer and make him feel that l.ejjneedn some of your apples for bis trade. When you get a buyer to this point, you are in position to do business with him, aud when you And a customer, above all things "make good." Seo that your fruit is properly aud honestly packed, and that your brand goes on every barrel in a neat arid JattiactWe way. Guar antee every barrel of fruit, and make it come up to the guarantee. When the buyer gets your first car load aud liude it all you represented it tojbebe will immedialelywire you for price on another car or possibly five. Don't lose your head when this bapnens, but price him what he wauts and at the market. Don't think be cause be iu is position to use more of your tipples thut you can spring tbe market ou hiui. like him a chuuoe to make a profit. Ciaiu his conlldenoe and compel bim to huve confidence iu you. 1 bad one car of Jonathan applos this season which 1 believe sold for me to one Urnr 25 cars of apples, be sides turning dowu older from them 1 could not till. The cur of Jonathans was fancy. The apples were sold at a fair price and th buyer doubtless made a nice profit on tb ni. As soon as tbey rece ved and examined thero they wanted prices on several more cars. As this was the last car I bad to offer, 1 switched them ou to Ben Davis. I sold them ten cars tbe first clip, and then five more. ' They then wanted ten mure, but could not see my way clear to bool. them just then. Later 1 sold them tcverul more cars They paid every diaft pron.ptly. Did not have a kick ou a cur sold to them. These pecple were strangers to me. I bad never sold them a dol lar's worth until the ca -of Jonathans. I looked up thoir rating and fouud tbey were thoroughly reliable. I gave tbim to nuderstaua mas 1 guaranieea everything sold them, and if by acci dent or carelessness of my packers I shipped them anything that was not right, I proposed to make it right. When vou not a good customer: stay with him. Some time you may ship him some apnles you did not intenJ to ship him, or possibly some of tl.e apples, or the whole car for tbat mat ter, are not us goi.d as you thought they were, it be so aavisea you, tnk his word for it. Allow any rea sonable claim be may make It he is tbe right kind of a customer bis claim will not be uuiust. Uae the telegraph freely. In this dny and age all perishable fruit is hnncrht und sold on the wires. An swer telegrams promptly, and always pay them. Don't be stingy. The Wnutern Union needs your contribu tion. and time is money. Ibe buyer nn tlm other end hasn't time for letter to reach him, and a telegram promptly aud properly answered has Bold manv cars of apples that other parties would have sold if the wires liad no oeen usea. Koil all vmir fruit on track. Con sign to no one. The man who packs bis fruit properly and guarantees it can always do this because a Brest many reliable nrrns wouia miner vuj ioht thev can depend upon than to get it on consignment. If yon can't ell your apples, throw tbera in the river and save your bar rels. There are iom few good commis sion Onus, but the tirin who can ban- die ynui fruit i.ud 11 ake you money can buy dimt tr.iiu you aud still maK you money. 1 shipped VI curs, about 14.000 bar rels ot ani.lea (bis reutou. and out side of some 1 have to storage, every car wi told on track and at a fail prioe, considering the season. Rev. Carlisle P. M. Martin, L L. D. Of Wavtrly, Texan, riles: "Of a morning, when 0rt arming, I often find a troubleHime colWlimi of phlegm wiucn produces a cuugh and 11 very hard to dislodge: but a small o nan tit v of Kallard'a Ilorehorrnd Syrup will at once dislodge it, and the trouble is over. I know of no medicine that is equal to it, and it is so pleasant to take. I can most cordially recommend it to all per sons needing a medicine for throat or lung trouble." Sold by Chas. N. Clarke.
