The value of advertising was illus trated last week. Mrs. M. Sue Adams called at this office Wednesday and stated she had lost her gold watch, having dropped it somewhere on the streets. At her request we wrote an advertisement for the next issue, offer ing a reward for the return of the watch. Mrs. Adams then went home, and in less than two hours Roy Watson brought the watch to her and received the reward. : It pays to advertise in the Glacier. The concert given last Friday nialit by Mrs. Heald and her pupils, the Glee club and others was in every way a success. Hood River has musical tal ent of a high order, nnd these concerts should take place offener. The Glee club was at its best. The songs by Messrs La Fiance and Lewis were well received, and both gentlemen were encored.. Mrs. Heald at the piano 5s always good, and Hood River is for tunate in having such an accomplished . teacher of music. ( In our last - issue we mentioned that Joseph A. Wilson built the watering trough at Spring branch. We have since been informed that J. R. Rankin donated the lumber, George T. Prather furnished the irons and Mr. Wilson did the work. , Mr Prather says that when he was supervisor he tried to keep the trough in repair, but- teamsters, when watering their teams, would allow the tongues of their wagons to jam it out of place. One day he fixed up the trough in good shape, and before night of thestiiuc day it was knocked down. " Thursday there was" hauled, through (he'strecta of IIood'Ki'ver" on'a heavy wagon a sMI-boat that JooUs hi- mid sti-oiitfenougt to make an ocean vov - Hi.ce. -On i'liqbiry.w'e learned it was the handiwork' of voting -Harry Hans berry, who was hauling it to the river. He has named it the "8ea Gull," We lea in that the hoy never saw t boat built before he started on this one, but he has finished a piece of work that would do credit to workmen skilled in the use of tools.. ' Hood River will celebrate the rjal orious Fourth. A committee of ar rangements is preparing a programme which will appear next week. The committee expects to secure an orator, some one to read the Declaration of Independence, good music, a base ball game between the Dufur and Hood Kiver clubs and u big crowd. Backus ! , ' " , . j " t,rallt Evans bragging on their respective potato patches, and in com pany with C. Welds, the artist who looks after the soles of Hood River, we walked with Mr. Backus over to his place on Kiver street. Mr. Backus has 100 square feet of laud, one-half of which is in garden and the other half in fruit trees. His potatoes are fine thrifty looking tops atid not a weed in sight. Evidently Mr. Backus intends to beat Harbison Bros.' potatoes at our coming fair. But what drew our at tention more than the potato patch was his orchard. On less than half an acre he lias 200 bearing fruit trees ap ples, pears, prunes, reaches and cher ries. The trees are all thrifty looking and stand so close ' together that the limbs intertwine and form a delightful shady grove. .Our prohibition friend with us suggested that it would make a splendid beer garden, but we don't i t jink ,. Mr. Backus will act on the sug- j gestion, though his name would fit for that kind of an institution. Not a weed nor spear of grass is allowed to grow in his orchard. He does not irri gate, but cultivates thoroughly. He also lias a fine strawberry patch that thrives without irrigation. v Lecture Rey.
