Captain Anlauf ot The Dalles is
agent for Stanley's latest work, and
those desiring it will do well to write

book, and is meeting with immense
sales.
A farmer down in Yamhill in ma
king out his assessment list, put in an
indebtedness of $240. An examination
disclosed the fact that the money was

The weather has been for the past
week all that the most exacting could
require. A few weeks continuance of
the same will make the winter easily
put up with, and assure stockmen
against loss.
There was a surprise party at John
A. Wilson's, Saturday night, on the
occasion of his son Austin's twentieth
birthday. A large number of young
friends were present to assist him in
the celebration.

left Thursday morning for California,

Wiekham. Mr. Smith goes tempor
arily to Adin Modoc county. The

Captain Coe's deserlptiou of the
murder of Indian Agent Bolan, which
appeared in our columns two weeks
ago, was copied all over the eastern
portion of this state and Washington,
which shows that our citizens have a
deep interest in all that pertains to
the early history and settlement of the
country.
The Insurance companies have set
tled with the county for the damage to
the court house by the recent tire, pay
ing $2730. This amount will repair
all damages, and under the efficient
management of Mr. C.J. Crandall the
architect in charge of the work of
repairing, it will probably leave a
handsome balance.

doing missionary work in Eastern Ore
gon for some time past, returned home

The Dalles purposes getting an ad
ditional supply of water from Dog
river, if it can be done. Our neighbors
may rind that settlers along the stream
will interpose an objection to its being
diverted from its natural channel.
There is a probability that the G A R
and the Relief Corps, and S of V will
have a joint public installation ot ora
cers. The arrangements have not
been completed, but notice will be
given next week should it be agreed
upon.
Mr. F. II. Button is expected home
soon, and we sincerely hope he will
have concluded to put up a sawmill on
his property. He has a splendid mill
site, and lots of timber, and the hum
of a big circular saw would be glad
music indeed.
Jay Gould according to a recent
dispatch says the Union Pacific has
purchased 13(1 locomot ives and between
4000 and 5000 freight cars, most of
which will be sent to this section of
the country tor the purpose of hauling
the wheat crop.
There will be a Christmas tree at the
school house in district 61, Tuesday
evening the 23rd. One at the Con
gregational church Christmas eve, and
one at the Methodist church Christ
nuia nieht. Contributions are now
being solicited.

Every fruit grower in the valley
should loin the society, and thus by
concerted action make a successful war
on the enemies, to their crops.
Mr. Frank York will sell his house
hold effects, horses, cows, fanning im
plements etc., Monday the 15th, Inst,
preparatory to leaving for the Sound.

some time their daughter dying there
last winter, and they go principally to
take care of their daughter's infant
child, and that without separating it
from its father If the climate there
agrees with them they will probably
remain.

side of the valley would do more to
enhance the values of property, and
bring in outside money, than any

effort on the part of the property own
ers, the thing could be easily accom
plished. k The plans should lie laid

done before spring. All it requires is
for some one Interested to take hold of
the matter.
Thpre is more or less growling on
the 10th of each month concerning the
collection of water rates. The Hy
drant Company have a rule that rates
for the month must be paid before the
10th, or a penalty of fifty cents is added
and If this is not paid the water is
turned off. There is no hardship or
injustice in the rule, yet people neglect
to pay and then feel aggrieved, on
account of the penalty. There is just
one way to avoid the annoyance of
the whole affair and that is to settle
before the 10th.
