The Hood River Townsite Company sold eight lots, block 23. to A. S. Blowers Monday. The lots lie just east of the new grade near the state road. The survey of Skamania county would give it a boom, and assist ma terially In its settlement. It should receive the attention of the Washing ton delegation. C. P. Bush sold 100 acres of land situate near the forks of the river to A. L. Phelps Saturday, it being a por tion of section 30 township one north of range nine east. Captain Anlauf ot The Dalles is agent for Stanley's latest work, and those desiring it will do well to write him tUere. It is a very interesting book, and is meeting with immense sales. A farmer down in Yamhill in ma king out his assessment list, put in an indebtedness of $240. An examination disclosed the fact that the money was Rowing to the county for delinquent taxes. The recepeion given to Rev. Mr. Wells and wife at their home Thurs day evening of this week, with many tokens of good will, was an occasion enjoyed by all, and one not soon to be forgotton. The weather has been for the past week all that the most exacting could require. A few weeks continuance of the same will make the winter easily put up with, and assure stockmen against loss. There was a surprise party at John A. Wilson's, Saturday night, on the occasion of his son Austin's twentieth birthday. A large number of young friends were present to assist him in the celebration. Captain Coe's deserlptiou of the murder of Indian Agent Bolan, which appeared in our columns two weeks ago, was copied all over the eastern portion of this state and Washington, which shows that our citizens have a deep interest in all that pertains to the early history and settlement of the country. The Insurance companies have set tled with the county for the damage to the court house by the recent tire, pay ing $2730. This amount will repair all damages, and under the efficient management of Mr. C.J. Crandall the architect in charge of the work of repairing, it will probably leave a handsome balance. Rev. The arrangements have not been completed, but notice will be given next week should it be agreed upon. Mr. F. II. Button is expected home soon, and we sincerely hope he will have concluded to put up a sawmill on his property. He has a splendid mill site, and lots of timber, and the hum of a big circular saw would be glad music indeed. Jay Gould according to a recent dispatch says the Union Pacific has purchased 13(1 locomot ives and between 4000 and 5000 freight cars, most of which will be sent to this section of the country tor the purpose of hauling the wheat crop. There will be a Christmas tree at the school house in district 61, Tuesday evening the 23rd. One at the Con gregational church Christmas eve, and one at the Methodist church Christ nuia nieht. All it requires is for some one Interested to take hold of the matter. Thpre is more or less growling on the 10th of each month concerning the collection of water rates. The Hy drant Company have a rule that rates for the month must be paid before the 10th, or a penalty of fifty cents is added and If this is not paid the water is turned off. There is no hardship or injustice in the rule, yet people neglect to pay and then feel aggrieved, on account of the penalty.
