We claim to surround the home with a halo, we wreathe it with our finest literary effusions, we embody a sentiment for it in our foundations of State; but the blunt truth is, that the idea is very abstract indeed. The real home is shorn of political romance. In thirty-two States to-day, a married women has no right to her own children. In sixteen states a wife has no right to her own earnings outside the home. In eight States a wife has no right to her own prop erty after marriage. In all the States, the wife has no right to the joint earnings. In every State except the four in which women are voters, there is discrimi nation against women in employment and compensa tion. In every State constitution, save Wyoming, Colorads, Utah and Idaho, the inelligible voters are aliens, lunatics, ' criminals, untaxed Indians and womed! Such discrimination detracts considerably from the home halo, and our boasted protection for Fire department. r . , 3")4 "50 Town law suit.;..' 117 00 City attorney fee J 108 30 Hauling 50 11 Labor on street ' 31 13 Meals J....t 2 00 Review, printing..'. When a newspaper is silent on matters like these, it implies cowardise or acquiesence. 1. Are you opposed to raising the saloon license? 2. Are you in favor of taking the proicrty and occu- n itimw nf tlio TM-ririle tr rnisc rfvenve for tlu- tmen ? Are you in favorof Rainier' s occupation tax law? 4. Are you in favor of saloons running all night? Are you in favor of saloons running on Sunday ? 0. Do yon consider a public house of prostitution a necessity in Rainier, and are you in favor of its con tinuance? 7. Are you in favor of open and unre stricted public gambling? 8. Are you in favor of slot machines in saloons for gambling purposes? Every person in Rainier has framed an answer to these questions, either yes or no, except the owner of the Review, and as he live in kelsoa, Wash., he tries to avoid taking an interest in thesje matters as an ex pressed opinion might reduce his income fron the sa loon push of the town. The Rainier correspondent of the Register has taken the negative of all the matters implied in these questions .and has often discussed them. For this reason he is called a knocker by the Review. This fairly leads us to inferr that the Re view considers one who favors all these things a good law abiding citizen. But the Register prefers to be lieve that the decent people of Rainier and Columbia County are with the man, who, not only writes up and praises the industrial enterprises and other good things of Rainier, but is able justly to criticise the acts of its (officials when deserved, and to expose ,the nisdeeds of ithe town's underwork! -as well, "' and that the clerk hirnUh all the coun ty aert with a copy of thla order.
