The duty of the lrgislature ia, Dot to investigate or f pond ti.r.e or money in fusing with and financ ing a loosing deal, but to r? peal so much of the exhistinj law as is necessary, and itself electa Master Fish Warden. That said warden be responsible to the legislature itself and report to it, and ltot to a ccmi&ioa whose chief end is pol itics. It is sale to say that no state in th Union, except Oregon, enjoys the unique distinction of having half of her delegation in congress tinder indictment, and half ot the other half under official investiga ' lion. What a spectacle we must now present to the people of other ; Mates? hat a subject for the prayers of those charitably in clined. What an object of con tempt and disdain to the rigidly honest, be he puritan or cavalier? At the beginning of the assessment work this year we were advised that all nperty would bo raised in value. AVe tot, this statement with faith and favor, bet expressed our doubts about the possibility of an equitable assessment being made. A few comparisons- and the people can draw their own conclu sions. Here is School District No. o!, in which is located the town of Houl ton, with three general stores, two sa loons, two hotels and a barbershop, and territory equal in size to the city limits of the City of Clatskanie, where there are seven general stores, a drug store, photograph gallery, four saloons, n - livery stable, three town halls, a saw null, a lawyer's office, twobutchershops and two bartwrshops.. Houlton proper ty is assessed at H,000, while the city f Clatskanie, with all its business, and Jive ' residences that -ost over S-VXX) each, is assessed at a trifle over $41,000. Then to make an individual comparison. Last vear the Rainier Gazette w as as eased H00. This year at o75. Last year the Clatskanie Chief was assessed $350. This year it is the, same. Last year the Oregon Mist was assessed 1100. This" year 433. Two years ago the Pittsburg Sentinel plant, now the Col cubliBegisteb, was assessed $120. Last year sot at all, but this year, although redirected from a hen roost after the first of March, it is assessed at f15. nnat is true ot tne printing business is true of every other- so far as we have investigated. To escape taxation a man should be a resident of Clatskanie, or else he must belong to the Republican ring of St. Helens. Now as a matter of fact we tried last spring to bny the Clatskanie Chief or the Oregon Mist, and the proprietors refused to take less then $2000 each for their plant. The Caiette plant waa- sold for $2000. We are not kicking about our assessment! ' being too bigh, but it certiinly should be no higher than that of the Chief or Mist, both old established papers. But we can pay our taxes, especially if busi ness continues as good as it is at pres ent. a r m j . ,t.!VL - This is to certify that all druggists j are authoried to refund your money : tt Foley's Honey and Tar fails to cure; your cough or cold. The work of organization has just be gun and will be vigorously pushed.
