Sma Worlds Around Us Jr By LYNN M. W ATKINS (tfMtr and Tribune) Sulcata 1963) Frog Chnnis Traveled From Shore To Shore On Hyacinths It was s peculiar sensation and became actually mystifying as time went on, continuing nifiht alter night. Some of the occupants of the cottage spoke of the nightly event as "un canny." From mild concern they began to wonder if they were imagining things or really hearing what they thought they heard. Jokingly, someone said "it sm-icked of the supernatu ral." The more observant and thoughtful of the group of lis teners noticed that there seem ed to he some sort of a connec tion between the noise and the direction and velocity of the wind. None of the perplexed folks would have thought any thing ahnut it had it ever hap pened in Ihe daytime, but It didn't, always at night; so it becamo just a little eerie. It alto became a nightly pastime nf the onttnacrs who SliiyCn HWillU! Ilifcms juat n check tip on the nightly chorus. The voices that came and went with the night and the wind direction, wore the sound nf frogs; croaks, twitters, runts, hleals and peeps. The sound would swell to full vol ume, Ihon slowly fade away un til it would bo entirely lost in the night. No one knew exactly when Ihe unusual frog chorus that came and went rouiiy was noticed, but at times it was very loud, then it was very faint and far away. Close To Shore The collage was within a few feet of Inn shore. The nights were warm and tho windows always open. The first to notice the. nnusualness of the frog chorus, was .(walroncd by the night breeze blowing the bed room curtains. Wide awake, he heard, very faintly, the sound of many frog vi.ices. The sound was very taint, but slowly grew louder, as if someono had turn ed up Ihe volume. A little later the sound was very loud, very lieir, and seemingly very near. While he listened there seemed to be a fading tendency; it con tinued to fade:. the voices grew fainter, and finally died out al together. Vnr ipvrrnl nlpht.l the In. ceasing and diminishing sound i oi Ihe froggy chorus continued. I Someone noticed that Ihe in-1 shore wind usually brought the , voices closer. If the wind held, the music continued and at n pilch. l)nc night, as the I voices began to fade, it was no ticed that the wind had shifted. No one could quite under stand why the wind and the calls should be so closely associated, but for some unexplained rea son they seemed to come and go; first very faint, and seem ingly far away, then increasing in volume until the frogs were in full cry, and apparently right at Ihi water's edge, and within a few feet of the cottage. Discovery Made Of course, frog voices were not unusual, they were present on most summer nights, but not ever in the ascending and de scending cadence. Even after an hour or more of riotous tumult, it sounded eerie to hear the voices fading, as if a great rlis- stance was slowly Intervening. Friends came to visit the cot tage. The chorus came under in tense study as more and more Interested listeners became in volved. Some went to Ihe lake shore to listen, and finally, the i discovery. Patches of water hyacinths dotted the lake, some more than half an acre in extent. On the floating masses lived dozens of frogs. A floating mass of the green vegetation carried a score or more of cold blooded music makers. The mass blew heller skellcr back and forth across the lake; Ihe little musicians came on tho summer breeze, now faint and far away, then loud and clear; traveling min strels of the summer night.
