(UPO Many Drugs Now Use Unknown To n Five Years Ago WASHINGTON (UPI) - Of all the drugs now ministering to man's welfare 45 per cent were unknown five years ago. This is one of many examples riled in a recent report by the House Science and Astronautics C'ommiltee of the hot pace being set by modern research and technology. The pace must he continued and even increased, the com mittee said, "for our well-being depends in a large measure on the rale" of scientific advances. Scientific progress, the com mittee said, will determine "The character of tomorrow's civilization." Science is the search for tin clcrstanding everything from "the forces in the atomic nuclei In the motions of the stars in the galazics." "At the end of the spectrum," the committee said, "we need to learn about the nature of mat ter, energy, and life Itself, both In strengthen the philosophical understanding of our purpose in I lie universe and to master tools permitting us to manipulate natural force for human better ment. "At the other end of the spec trum, we mean to control dis ease, improve food supplies, beautify our surroundings and our environment at a time when blight such as pollution and erosion threaten them), pro vide useful and rewarding em ployment, and add In the variety and comfort of goods and serv ices supplied to our people." The committee said man has progressed further in science in tlie past several decades "than in all previous history." Prog ress in the lifetime of today's youth "will undoubtedly exceed that of all time previous to 1963 Technology, the committee said, has "transformed life in the United Slates in the last 100 years" and has "helped us to achieve the highest standard of living in the world." A century ago men and ani mals did most of the world's work. Today machines do most of it. Since 1 iltii) the average lifespan has jumped from 40 to 70 years, the commit tee said. !n the meantime, technologi cal developments have spurred economic growth. Today, the committed said, "some industries derive most of their business from products that did not exist 2(1 years ago." "Of all Hie fnnd products avail able to the housewife today." it said, "66 per cent did not exist 10 years ago. Of all the drugs now on the market, 4!i per cent were unknown five years ago."
