DECEMBER 23, 1963 Recipes Listed For Tempting Hors d'Oeuvres Chopped ripe olives and eggs perked up with seasonings make tempting hors d'oeuvrcs. Required for Olive Egg Canapes are on-helf cup ripe olives; three hard-boiled eggs; one-fourth teaspoon celery salt; dash pepper; two tablespoons chopped sour pickle; two table spoons mayonnaise; butter or margarine; six to eight thin slices bread; one tablespoon chopped pimiento. Chop olives and eggs. Com bine with celery salt, pepper, pickle and mayonnaise. Butter bread, then spread with olive mixture. Cut into small trian gles, rounds or other fancy shapes. Garnish each with a bit of pimiento. Makes about 24 canapes. A new way of preparing hot hors d'oeuvrcs is to spear a piece of canned pineapple, a pit ted date half and a maraschino cherry on a toothpick. Roll in moist flaked coconut and broil until coconut begins to toast and appetizers are heat ed through. Serve hot. The 10 award winners were selected on the basis of outstanding achieve ments in their fields. Russian Cosmonaut Among Award Winners New York Valentina Teresh kova, 26-year-old cosmonaut from Moscow, has been selected by Mademoiselle magazine as one of its ten Merit Award win ners for 11)63. Miss Tereshkova was cited for her 71-hour orbital flight last June, a flight that earned for her the title "first woman in space" and received world-wide recognition. She had been textile weaver since the age of 18. graduating in 1960 from a Soviet trade school as a "cotton spinning technologist" and was, by 1961, an accomplished parachutist. It was not until after she entered the USSR spaceflight training program that she received in struction as a pilot. Miss Tercshkova's participa tion in the training program has been described as a con scientious and vigorous one, her determination the envy of male co-trainees. Many Fields An annual event since 1944, the silver-medallion awards were given this year to young women who range in age from 21 to 30. Mrs. Blackwell com mended the 1963 winners as "remarkable young women who have already distinguished themselves in their fields, for whom this past year has meant special achievement, and who may be expected to achieve even greater honors in the future." In addition to Miss Teresh kova young women singled out for this recognition include sing ing comedienne Barbara Streis and, at 21 the youngest member of the award-wininng g r o u p, who, since her first appearance on Broadway less than two years ago, has also acquired fame in nightclubs, on television, and as a recording star; fashion de signer Deanna Littell, at 24 the creative inspiration behind tne nearly overnight success ol Harold Goldstein, a sportswear firm; French-Indian movie ac tress Leela Naidu, 23, whose very first film won an award at the Berlin Film Festival; 30-year-old opera singer Reri Grist, who debuted within three months last year at three major opera houses La Scala, the Vienna State and Covcnt Gar den and received critical ac claim in all; writer Susan Son tag who, at 30, produced one of 1963's most extraordinary Ichronicles of imagination, "The Benefactor"; athlete Mu riel Grossfeld, a 23-year-old gymnast expected to be an out standing Olympic representative in Tokyo in 1964 competition; politician Nancy Brown, a 23-year-old law s c h o o 1 student who, when a senior two years ago at the University of Mary land, won a Democratic seat in the Maryland legislature and became the youngest woman legislator in the nation: educa tor Janet Newton, 27, who re "ently began a private project to coach tenement children and has since formed an informal Homework Help Plan that pro vides tutors for the children; and actuary Anna Maria Raupa pnrt, at 23 the youngest woman ever to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. New Hash Recipe This recipe, offered by the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association deserves considera tion tor a Sunday brunch. Chop a medium-sized onion fine and cook in 3 tablespoons of bacon fat Drain a 7'i-ounce can of minced clams. Chop 4 to 6 boiled potatoes very fine and add to the drained clams and to the onion in the skillet. Season with salt and pepper and mix lightly.
