Lebanon's Warriors Nudge Crater High Comets 52-51 LEBANON Lebanon's War riors over game a ihree-point deficit in (he last minute of play here Friday night to edge the Crater High basketball team 52-51. Crater had a 49-46 with three minutes left on the clock. A Comet bad pass gave the War riors the ball and with a minute left Tom Mechals goaled from the corner for 49-48. Lebanon grabbed another op portunity when Mike Turner's layup on a fast break failed to go in. Mechals this time fired a shot in from the head of the key for a 50-49 Warrior lead. Shots failed to go in for Cra ter's Larry Pepper and Darryl Summerfield. Jerry Joslin was fouled and made both gift tos ses on the one and one for 52-40. With nine seconds on the clock Larry Pepper sank two charity tries for 52-51. Lebanon got the ball and held on. 25-AU at llatf Lebanon led 19-13 at the quar-; ter. But, there still will be some haskctball activity in this area this week. Heading the program will be the Lions Club Holiday Classic Tournament at Cave Junction. It will give an indication of what is in store in the Rogue League because tourney entries represent half the schools in that circuit. Phoenix and St. Mary's High clash in the Friday opener and Illinois Valley and Eagle Point in Hip second game. Friday's winners mix in the Saturday finale after a tussle between the first night losers. Sulhrrlin will play at Hogue River on Friday and Douglas at Crater in Central Point on Saturday in other prep engage ments. On the collegiate front Southern Oregon College will take on Humboldt State at Ar eata, Calif., on Friday and Sat urday. Belter Ball Handling The Comets had better ball handling that they've had in three previous tussles but did throw the ball away more times than they gained it. And, early violations were harmful. Crater fired 15 of 39 for .395 from the field and from the free stripe shot a scoring .840 on 21 of 25. Louisiana State dizzy Saturday hitting on 26 of ,17 passes to j give the Bears a 14-7 victory in : the fifth annual Blue Bonnet I Bowl. A crowd of 50,1X10 saw LSU J score early in the first quarter, I then hang nn for dear life as Trull filled the air with foot balls. Trull hit end James Ingram with 7 and 13-yard scoring pass es in the fourth quarter to bring the Bears from behind. The game was a lot more onesided than the score indi cated, however, as the Bears had four long drives run out deep in LSU territory. A lfl-yard touchdown run by Baylor, halfback Henry Pickett was called back in the third quarter on a personal foul pen alty, and two plays later LSU back Buddy Socfkcr intercepted a Trull pass ending the Baylor threat. Nov., and host Lakeview High posted Friday night victories lo gain the Saturday champion ship finale of the Winnemucca To - The - Sea Basketball Tourn ament here. The Nevada school edged 53-50 and Lakeview downed Eagle Point 51-39. Lakeviews' Honkers fought ahead in the third quarter to beat the Eagles. EP had 15-6 and 25-20 quarter and halftime leads. After three periods Lake view was on top 3fi-35, Dennis Warren put in 23 points for the Honkers and fireg Stephens 11. For the Eagles Lon me Mesloh totaled 2n. Each club hit about 33 per rent from the field. Lakeview had a 33-2fl margin in rebounds, led hy Warren Mesloh pared the Eagle hoard work. On the following kickoff, LSU halfback Joe Lahruo gave Ti ger fans something to cheer about for the first lime in three quarters, as he returned the kick 72 yards to the Baylor 24 before being brought down from behind by Lawrence Elkins. The Tigers could gain only one yard in four plays, however, and Baylor took over to run out the clock. LSU managed to score after an exchange of punts in t h e first quarter.
