UECEHBKR 13, JS83 Final Plans for New H0SDital:Medical Science Taking Newer Look At German Measles To Be Submitted to State Board A 5 Final plans of the proposed Sacred Heart Hospital will be submitted to the State Board of Health for approval at the end of December, according to Sister Luke, hospital admin istrator. Working drawings and spec ifications have been completed and are available for review. Immediate construction plans call for three integrated units the nursing unit, the admin istration unit and the auxiliary unit. All units will be built of fire- Former Convict's Arraignment Set SEATTLE (UPIWohn Was ylenchuk, 51, an ex-convict, was to be arraigned here today on charges of murder and robbery in connection with a 1954 bank holdup here in which a Seattle policeman was shot to death. A federal indictment charged) him with taking part in the rob- j bery of the Greenwood Branch J of the Seattle -1 irst National Bank. Wasylenchuk was brought from Canada Wednesday b y Federal Bureau of Investigation officials. The move came as Vancouver, B.C. lawyers were trying to have his extradition blocked. They claimed he could not be extradited because he is a parolee. The Seattle charges against Wasylenchuk were made by a U.S. grand jury here Sept, 10. He was arrested on the charges Oct. 17. Wasylenchuk was paroled from a Canadian prison earlier this year after serving time for a 1955 robbery of a Burnaby, B.C. bank. Vancouver attorney Thomas Dohm said Wasylen chuk was technically still under sentence while on parole. Wasylenchuk was being held in Oakalla prison in suburban Vancouver when picked up by the FBI agents. proof materials, a reinforced concrete structural frame and brick exterior walls. The nurs ing unit will be four story con struction, and the other units will be two story. Provides 89 Beds The nursing unit will provide 89 beds at completion, an in crease of nine beds over pres ent facilities. Future comple tion of the ground floor area in this unit will permit an addi tion 34 patient beds to be pro vided with no increase in aux iliary facillities. The nursing unit concept is unique in hospital construction today insofar as all patient rooms will be private, a fact that will permit improved nurs ing care at less operating cost. Patient rooms will be individ ually controlled for complete climatic comfort both summer and winter with no recircula tion of air, permitting each bed to serve the most strict isola tion needs. Each patient room will be furnished with individaul wa ter closet and combination ward robe, lavatory cabinet. Built - in patient consoles adja cent to each bed will summon nurse assistance as vell as pro vide individual telephone and television service. Television Available Television sets will be avail able at all rooms, with remote control operation by the pa tient. Each bed will be equip ped with built-in oxygen, and special care beds will be equip ped with suction outlets as well. The administration unit will provide reception area, wait ing room, gift shop, meeting hall and rest rooms for the public as well as the normal administration facilities. The auxiliary unit will in clude the medical and service facilities necessary for daily op eration. The immediate medical pro gram calls for complete emer gency radiology and laboratory facilities and a surgical facili ty consisting of out patient sur gery, cystoscopy surgery, two general surgeries and one spe cial surgery capable of accom modating the latest in monitor ing equipment, post - anesthe sia room and auxiliary staff fa cilities. Service Facilities The service facilities include kitchen, cafeteria with public snack bar, pharmacy, central supply and storage and the cen tral mechanical room for the entire hospital. The mechanical program pro vides complete heating and air conditioning for all facilities with special consideration for aseptic treatment of air at the surgical suite. Internally, the hospital will operate on a network of special communication systems to fa cilitate the best in medical-surgical care. In addition to the individual patient nurse call. plans call for an internal inter communication system includ ing paging system, special sur gery, radiology, laboratory au dio system, pneumatic tube system, alerting and alarm systems. These wilt be supple mented by the standard tele phone system. Surgeries will be equipped with built-in oxide gases as well as wet process vacuum system. Electrical Facilities Electrical facilities will pro vide fluorescent lighting gener ally designed for minimum maintenance and housekeeping. A built-in "dry process vac uum cleaning system will be provided in the nursing unit. Emergency electrical genera tion will be furnished to handle all neccessary loads in the event of disruption of normal electrical service. All facilities and services have been planned for possi ble expansion to eliminate cost ly demolition at a future date. Entire cost for the ultimate hos pital program will be less than the national average for hos pital construction, hospital of ficials said. By DKLOS SMITH 111 Science KUitor XEW YORK (UPI) - Medical science is having a newer new look at German measles and it doesn't at all like the newest new things it is seeing. lne first new look was 22 years ago, when this virus dis ease was considered utterly harmless. That new look re vealed it could have disastrous effects on the babies of women who had it during the first stages of pregnancy. With this exception German measles still was considered a harmless disease although in very rare instances it might give rise to a passing inflam mation of the brain. More Numerous Now the current newer look is revealing that these brain in flammations and other compli cations involving the central nervous system are more nu merous than was supposed. 1 H also is snowing Wat even !the most diagnostically skilled . of physicians can have trouble I telling its rash and other symp toms from those of measles, I scarlet fever, infectious monon i ucleosis, and of side-effects from drugs. As a disease German measles was first described in 1752. Vi ruses were unknown then and it was considered a hybrid of measles and scarlet fever. It was established as an independ ent disease in 1815 but not un til 1962, HT years later, was the virus which causes it, iso lated. That shows how elusively subtle the vims is. it may also show virologists were not ob sessively interested in finding it. For a very long time, after all, medical science thought it was only capable of causing a mild discomfort for a few days. The scientific heat was put on the virologists with the discov ery that it could cause still births, abortions, and malforma tions and mental retardation in infants. Now the heat is intensi fied by the new, new look. What medical science wants from the virologists is a quick and easy test to show whether a pregnant woman (or anyone else) has German measles or something else within hours of the appearance of the first rash Laboratory tests at present are laborious ami uncertain and they take davs. Ceateml in Britain Much of the newest look is centered in Great Britain where there was a major epidemic in 1962.
