THURSDAY, Christmas Will Be Quiet, Religious Day Inside Vatican By WILLIAM SUNDERLAND United Press International VATICAN CITY (UPI) -Christmas Eve, 1941, was a grim holiday for Italy. The Vatican, in the heart ol Rome, also was suffering, des pite its World War II neutral ity. There wasn't enough food and there was even less cheer. Giovanni Battista Montini was a monsignor with the Vatican Secretarial of State and, as was his custom, he had invited some friends to hear midnight Mass and then eat with him. After Mass, he told them rue fully: "I'm sorry, but it was impossible to get the necessary food. This may be out of or-Hpi- hul have a bottle of cham pagne I've been saving and I suggest we arinn u iukuuici . Prate On Earth One of the toasts that night was simple: "To peace on Earth and goodwill to all men.' Twenty-two years later, Mon tini also will have the tradition al post-midnight dinner in me Vatican. But this time he is Pope Paul VI. This will be his first Christ mas as Pope, but those close to him believe he will spend the dav as he has In the past. Naturally, the emphasis will be on the religious. Christmas for the Pope be nin ihrpR davs before Dec. 25. When he makes his traditional Christmas address. This year it probably will deal with peace. It will be broadcast around the world by Vatican Radio. On Christmas Eve, Pope Paul will say midnight Mass in St. Peters Basilica and afterward, as is the Italian custom, prob ably will dine with close friends normally Vatican pre lates. Turkey Certain There is almost certain to be turkey on the table for Christ mas dinner, although chances arc it will be boiled instead of roasted. A salad, maybe a vege table or two, and a glass of wine not more will make up the rest of the dinner. All the pontiffs meals are prepared by nuns specially charged with the job. As each Pope is elected he decides which nuns he wants to run the kitchen and in many eases they come from the home area ol the pomitt. The late Pope John XX1I1 had the Poor Sisters of Bcrga nm, near his birthplace, run ning the kitchen and the pres ent pontiff relics on the Sisters Eddie Fisher Plans Trip To Mexico PUERTO VAI.LARTA, Mexico (UPI) Eddie Fisher is coming here this weekend, perhaps to seek the divorce that would open the way for Richard Bur ton to marry Elizabeth Taylor, it was reported today. Judge Arcadio Estrada Quin nnes, who granted n divorce to Burton's wife Sybil earlier this week, said Fisher is expected "sometime between Saturday ami Monday." He would not say whether the singer plans to file for a "quickie" divorce from Miss Tavlor. (In Hollywood Wednesday, Fisher said of his marriage to Miss Tavlor, "I would liko to be out of this thing whatever it is as soon as possible." But Fisher insisted he had no plans lor a trip to Mexico. Earlier Sinatra Kidnap Tries Told I.OS ANGELES (UPll-Two earlier attempts to kidnap Hank Sinatra Jr. and the near success of the crime were re lated toiliiv bv a cellmate of one of the three suspected kid llillH't'S. "Once in Arizona, we just missed connections." John Wil liam Irwin, 42, was quoted as telling Robert Dale Howard, 27, I.akewiiud, Calif,, before his transfer here Tuesday from a San Diego. Calif., jail' Irwin also was quoted as tell ing llou.ii.l that the two young er susix'cts, Harry Worlhington KiHiian and Joseph Clvde Ams ler. both 2:i. spirited Sinatra Jr. through roadblocks in the Lake Talioe area whore the youth was kidnaped Dec. R. MODERN PLUMBING & SHEET METAL Phont 773-5368 613 t Jjckton Sheaf DECEMBER 19, 1903 o St. Mary the Child. They come from near Monti- ni's north Italian birthplace. For desert there is the tradi tional Italian Christmas cake called "Panettone," which is pound cake. It is made by sev eral large firms in Milan, where Montini served as arch bishop until he was elected pon tiff. 1 Naturally, a number of the firms send dozens of Die cakes to him every Christmas. The Pope keeps one and then has the others distributed to vari ous orphanages and other such institutions. A bottle of Italian spumante, i a sort of sweet champagne, al-1 so is traditional although Pope , Paul probably will take only a sip or two himself. ! During Christmas morning and most of the day, the Pope will often go to his private chapel to pray. At mid-day he will appear at his window over- j looking St. Peters Square to, give his blessing and possibly J make a few remarks. i Otherwise, Christmas is a quiet, religious day inside the Vatican. j LEGAL NOTICES TIMBER FOR SALE.
