Although it has not reached Die size that it has in some parts of the country, it is, nevertheless, higher than average. As a result of family split-ups locally, there are now 2,652 men and women in the county who are listed as divorced or sepa rated. Of the total, 2,107 are di vorced and 555 are separated. The figures are based on a survey recently made by the Department of Health, Educa tion and Welfare and on data gathered by the Department of Commerce. Local Residents Noted They show that, in Jackson County, 50 local residents out of every 1.000 over the age of 14 are either divorced or sepa rated. That is a higher ratio than is reported for most of the United States, the average being 43 per 1,000. In the State of Oregon, it is 48 per l.ouo. Growing attention is being paid to the divorce situation be cause of the effect that it has on the lives of so many adults and, more especially, on their children. 10(1,000 Divorces In U.S. In Lhe past year there were more than 400,000 divorces in the United Slates. They have markedly changed Lhe lives of 800,000 men and women and of their nearly 500.000 children. While the number of divorces keeps going up, in line with the expansion of the population, mere has been no increase in the rate itself. Actually, the divorce rate per 1,000 people has been droi ping since 1046, when the all time high of 610,000 divorces was recorded. This avalanche was attrobut cd to the marital difficulties connected with hasty war-time marriages and with the long separations that ensued. Some Have Remained Many of the people who found that their marriages were not made in ncaven, and who were subsequently divorced, have re married, me figures show. According to the Govern ment's figures, for every person in ine united Mates who has been divorced and who has nol remarried, there are 2.5 others. once divorced, who have re married. Assuming that Jackson Coun ty is average in this respect, there are an estimated 5,268 ad ditional men and women locally who have gone through divorce. Crown Zellerbach Warns Investors SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - Crown Zellerbach Corp., sur prised by a five-point rise In its stock because of rumors it has a new miracle drug In the works, Wednesday tried to head off speculators. A company spokesman said even if the experimental drug Dimethyl Sulfoxide, or DMSO should live up to the effects at tributed to it, "commercializa tion of the chemical as a drug would have little effect on the company's overall sales volumes and earnings. However, stock purchasers were apparently unimpressed as the stock, which closed Tuesday at 55' soared to 60' i on the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange Wednesday. A Crown Zellerbach public relations man reported: "Our annual business is more than $600 million, of this, the chemi cal division docs only $2 million. What's all the fuss about?" The University of Oregon Medical School in Portland has been testing DMSO. Doctors said the chemical, derived from wood, has bright possibilities in the field of medi cine but that much testing re mained to be done before it could be marketed. Its posaibi- Mies include help in human or- f'' gan transplant, pain killing and Mr,, the potential of transporting medication in the human body. "Debbi Eve'' 23-ln.
