Many Origins Given
For Plum Pudding
BOSTON, Mass. (UPI)-Plum
pudding, a standby of holiday
menus, shows up In assorted
books as having assorted
origins. , , , ,
One commercial producer of
Iho pudding cited one hook on
"Old English Customs" by a
man named Ditchfipld, who said
that plum pudding "is not older
than the early years of the 18lh
. renturv." It was a "House of
Hanover" or active settlement
dish consisting of a porridge or
pottage, and not a pudding,
made up of very strong broth
of shin of beef.
"Encyclopedia of Food" says
tho earliest record of plum pud
ding came from Iho memoirs
of a Frenchman who took a
voyage on a British ship in 1058.
The chef combined flour, lard,
currants, salt and popper, in
a napkin and cooked the "por
ridge" in bouillon which the
Frenchman called "not abso
lutely bad."
Tho first mention of "plum
pudding," per se, was given in
a 171)1 book of a Mrs. Kraser
who was called the "sole teacher
of the art of cookery" in Edin
burg, Scotland. She entitled Ifir
raisin-like dessert "plum pud
ding," and it may have boon
becauso of the swelling of the
raisins that the dish got its
name. "Plum" evidently meant
to "rise" or "swell" in those
days. In that area.
For her daughter's wedding
and reception which followed
Mrs. Smith chose a satin bro
cade sheath dress of orange and
brown with brown accessories.
Mrs. Sacchi wore a beige dress
with black accessories.
At the reception Mrs. Jerry
Smith, sister - in - law of the
bride, cut and served the cake,
and Mrs. Jerry Brannon pour
ed coffee. Mrs. Ray Hogue pre
sided at the punch bowl. In
charge of the guest book was
Miss Carole Sacchi, Auburn,
Calif., sister of the bridegroom,
Miss Diane Hcidcmann and
Miss Janice Gaull were al the
gitt table.
Trip Later
The coupe plans a wedding
trip to Auburn, Calif, from De
cember 24 until January 1. For
traveling the bride wore a white
wool sheath dress with gray
accessories and the red rosebuds
and white carnation corsage
from her bridal bouquet.
The bride attended Medford
High School. Mr. Sacchi attend
ed Medford High School and is
employed by Cascade Wood
Products. They are making
their home at 233 South Ivy
Street.
Among the out of town guests
was Douglas Sacchi, Auburn,
Calif., brother of the bridegroom.
