It's hard to tell from his expression whether he's in a predicament or is welcoming the op portunity to throw the ball to a teammate in South Eugene's Axemen Tip Tornado South Eugene High School's hard-racing, hot-shooting Axe men basketball con 1 1 n g e n t, drove in front for keeps in the closing minutes of a nip and tuck second half here Friday night to clip the Medford Black Tornado 67-63 In the first en counter of a two-game non league series. A turn and drive shot by Dick Shearer with 2:37 on the clock broke a,59-all knot and put the Axemen on top for good. Shear er added a pair of free heaves with two minutes left to play. Then 6-6 all-stater John Pink staff drove the base for an other goal a half-minute later and the Eugene club had a six point 65-59 margin that was just a bit too much for Medford to wipe away. Two-Point Gap The Tornado did have oppor tunities and came within two points of catching up before the final buzzer sounded. Less than a half-minute after South stretched to Its six-point spread, its widest of the night, scrapping Larry Vowell netted a push shot from the side. Then, the pressing Tornadoes got the ball out of bounds twice, on a muffed pass and on a violation by the Axemen, at the Medford end of the court. One shot was blocked by the South cngers, who stiffened their defenses and another try bounded from the rim. Medford lost the ball on a violation but got it under the SE hoop. Mike Barnes scored on a fast break with 14 seconds left. But, the basket was dis allowed becnuso Vowell had been followed by Bob Coleman ns the break got underway. Pinkstaff was made relative ly Ineffective for the Axemen in the first half by the Medford defenders. His teammates had trouble getting him the ball. When they did the likes of Bruce Bertrand and Steve Davis were on him. In the third quarter, it be came a different story. A dead ly shot from both inside and out, Pinkstaff put in seven goals in 14 tries. He wound up with 24 points to lead both teams in scoring. His 12 rebounds also led In that department. When Pinkstaff was out of the lineup or wasn't getting scoring chances, teammates helped take up the slack and Soulh fired a burning .450 from the field on 27 goals in 60 tries. Medford had a .323 gunning mark on 21 of 65. Free shots helped Ihe Tornado to keep the scoring close. They put in 21 ol 26. The Axmen swished 13 or 20. Bertrand Has 14 Bertrand with 14 points and Bill Enyart and Vowell with 13 each paced Ihe Medford scoring and were supported by Barnes and Davis with eight each. Shearer, George Myrmo and Rich Brooke also had eight apiece for Soulh. Medford had an edge of four In rebounding, 44-40, with rugged Bill Enyart making 11 retrieves, Davis and Bertrand each nine and Bill Houston seven in spirited effort. Rrooko pulled seven for Ihe Choppers and Shearer six. Medford had 18-14 and 33-30 quarter and hnlftime differ ences. At Ihe end of three peri ods South Eugene was on top 53-50. Tussle Evened As the final chukker began, a goal and a free shot by Hous ton evened Ihe scrap. Medford went ahead 55-53 on free losses by Bertrand. Pinkstaff evened the count at the free stripe and Coleman grabbed a loose ball in the slot and put it in for 57-55 SE lead. An Enyart goal squared the gnme again and Berlrand's turning jumper made it 59-57 for Medford. Shearer's shot from free line range pull ed the Axemen Into the last tie score with three minutes left to play. Enyart with five points, Vowell and Davis each with four and Bertrand and Barnes with two apiece teamed to keep Medford in the scoring thick of it. Enyart, Davis, Barnes, Pete Hinman, Vowell and Rich Knight were scorers in the sec ond period when Medford built the widest spread of eight points at 28-20. South fought back into the battle on the efforts of Brookes, Myrmo, Jim Wathey, Shearer, Ed Muth, Jim Burke and Pinkstaff. Discouraging Start It was a discouraging start for Medford. Myrmo hit a jump er off the opening tipoff. He followed with a driver and Cole man hit from close range on a Pinkstaff feed. In the mean time, Barnes put in a lone free toss for Medford and the score was 6-1. But, the Medford's quickly got rolling. Vowell sank a long push, Bertrand fired from the side of the slot and put in a rebound. Barnes added a second gifter and got a corner jumper, Vow ell swished another long push. In this run, Coleman got a lone South bucket. Medford led 12-8 and stayed in front until the sec ond half. Prospect won, 63-36. The winners had a 31-20 half time lead, then really poured in on during the second half, scor ing 32 points while holding Cra ter to 16. In a preliminary to this game, the tide went the other way around. The Crater sophomores ran over the Prospect JV 63-32. But Prospect's varsity con trolled the floor in its match with the Crater JV. Five of the Prospect men hit In double figures. High man was Andy Maurer with 15 points. Jerry Wilson had 13, John Scott 12, Art Andrcsen 11, and Bill Hunt 10. It was the third sh-niuhl win for Prospect. The Cougars did not dominate the boards but came through with some renl fino work on their play patterns. iney got outstanding ball-hawking by Jerry Wilson. High point man of Ihe game, however, was Dave Harper of the Cornels JV. He netted 18 points, half of his team's total. Crater sophomores headed Ihe Cougar JV 22-5 at the quar ter and 37-8 at Ihe half. Crater held the lead during much of the second and third quarters, and at one point open ed up a five-point gap. But, a Cottage Grove surge in the last part of the fourth quarter took the visitors out to a 49-42 advan tage with only a minute to go. The Comets developed a last- minute punch of their own, with Darryl Sum merfield hitting twice, with 44 seconds left and again with three to go, but it was too late. The shooting percentages from the field told the story of the game. Crater shot 20 of 70 for a .284 average (.324 in the first half, .250 in the second). Cot tage Grove, meanwhile, took only 49 shots but made 21 of them for a .429 percentage (.371 in the first half and .500 in the second). Tied Six Times The teams each had .500 aver age from the free throw line, Crater 6 for 12 and Cottage Grove 7 for 14. The score was tied six times. one of them half-time, when the count was knotted at 23-all. Cot tage Grove led after the first quarter 12-10, and at the third intermission, 33-29. The Comets were superior on SE, Central Live Up To Preseason Billing By United Press International South Eugene and Central Catholic lived up to preseason expectations Friday night with victories against highly - rated high school basketball oppo nents. South Eugene, ranked first in the season's initial Oregon Jour nal poll, edged third - ranked Medford h7-63. Central Catholic, rated sixth, got by second ranked Grant of Portland Bti 65. Marshfield, rated fifth smashed arch-rival North Bend S3-4B, but eighth-ranked Granls Pass and ninlh-place South Sa lem both were dumped. Sunset's tall Apollos lopped Soulh Salem 74-48 and Roseburg edged Grants Pass 62-57. North Catholic, rated No. 1 in th Class A-2 poll, had to scramble to beat Mt. The lead actually changed hands only twice. Cottage Grove led during the early and late stages of the game, while Crater dominated the middle portion. The visitors lumped off to a quick 6-0 lead on three feeder- tvoe plays, men tne Lomeis defense toughened up and the Fireballs' shots began to find their marks. Larry Pepper put Crater on the scoreboard with 4:55 left in the opening period. After allow ing another Cottage Grove two pointer by Charles Olds the Comets closed the gap to 8-6 on Mike Turner's shot from the corner and a jumper by Sum- merfield. Comets Roar Back Olds and Bruce Hall stretched the visitors' lead to 12-6 with 36 seconds left in the period, but the Comets roared back. Pepper hit with eight seconds remaining and Summerfield with just two ticks of the clock to go. Summerfield was sharp. He was high point man of the game with 19. Bob Stroh had 11 for Crater. High point man for Cot tage Grove was Olds with 14. Merle Carpenter and Mark Hen ningsgaard each had 10. Stroh and Mike Turner exer cised the most control of the boards. Stroh came down with 15 rebounds, Turner with 11. The Comets were at their best in the first part of the second quarter. Mike Turner knotted the count at 12-all when the period was half a minute old. A Summerfield jump shot put the Cornels in the lead. TJien Summerfield hit again to make it 16-12 at 5:55. Two Henningsgaard field goals brought Cottage Grove even again, but Stroh plunked in a free throw, Summerfield hit from the corner and Stroh put in another two-pointer to put the Comets ahead at 21-16 with 4:10 left in the half. Kept Oulside Crater's defense was at its best during this part of the game. The visitors rarely got in close and had to settle for shoot ing from the outside. But then personal fouls started to hurt the Comets. Mike Turner fouled Richard Wright of Cot tage Grove, who made one of two shots. Hall hit with a two pointer, then made a free throw after being fouled by Pepper. Wright brought Cottage Grove even with a free throw after being fouled by Mike Turner again. Summerfield put Craler ahead Open 'til 9 Mon.-Fri. Grants Pass 476-434 J the Crater-Cottage Grove basketball game at Central Point Friday night. Other Comets include Mike Turner (32), left, Bob Turner (20) at right. with 1:10 left but a Hall jumper knotted the count with 23 sec onds left. It stayed that way, 23-23, at the half. After the intermission, the score seesawed back and forth. Crater held brief leads at 25-23 and 26-25. But then Bob Turner fouled Henningsgaard, who made both of his shots to Dut the visitors ahead 27-26. They dominated from that point on. Tied at 33 and 35 Carpenter made it 29-26, Sum merfield closed the gap with a layup, but Hall and Olds took Cottage Grove out to a 33-28 lead. Summerfield was fouled with three seconds left in the period. He plunked one in for 33-29 at the end of the third per iod. Crater tied the score for the last times early in the fourth quarter at 33-all and again at 35 all. Cottage Grove went ahead to stay at 37-35 with 5:09 left in the game. A Stroh free throw brought the Comets to within one point at 4:53. Mike Lee hit for Cottage Grove, and then Bob Turner excited the crowd when he stole the ball at mid-court and went in all alone with a layup to make it 39-38 at 4:05. But then Carpenter found the range with three field goals in the last four minutes. Ashland Grizzlies Defeat Willamette ASHLAND Ashland High's basketball Grizzlies "looked like different team" here Friday night and recorded their first victory of the new campaign. Much improved over a week ago when they lost twice at Redding, Calif., the Bruins bounced Willamette of Eugene 70-61. The Ashlanders turned in steadier game throughout, even more so in the second half when they were able to get the shots they were working for. Willamette grabbed a 14-13 first period margin but Ashland headed 32-29 and 55-44 at the other rest breaks. 15-Point Spread The Wolverines were on top through most of the first quar ter. In the second canto the score was even at 23-all' then Ashland went ahead. The game was tied again at 29-all. Then a Grizzly three-point play put the home club on top for good. Willamette pulled up to 34-33 but Ashland widened from there and six minutes into the third quarter had its widest advan tage 15 points at 53-38. In the last stanza the game was narrowed to eight points at 63 55. Ashland got seven points in the last couple of minutes of play to hold off any Willamette rally plans. The Grizzlies swished a siz zling .647 from the field (11 of 17) in their 23-point third quar ter. Ashland's field average for HUSTON RUNNERUP SACRAMENTO, Calif.
