SUNDAY, DECEMBER IS, 13 B 5 Marseilles Mayor May Be Dark Horse Against Charles De Gaulle MEDFOKD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON By PAUL EVE United Press International PARIS (UPI)-A hero of the French resistance in World War II a man honored after the war by General Charles de Gaulle himself may be a dark horse candidate to run for pres ident against De Gaulle in the next election, expected in 1965. He is Gaston Deferre, may or of Marseilles and socialist deputy in the French National Assembly. The French call him a "petardier," or firecracker. It describes a lively, explosive personality. At 53, and thus 20 years younger than De Gaulle, De ferre has a fine record admin istratively and politically. Although the nearest he has ever gotten to admitting he would stand for the presidency is a non-commital "That would take a lot of thinking about," he is already acting like a can didate. There is no doubt that he could easily obtain the nominal approval required to become a candidate. With every week that passes there seems to be more indication that the com bined opposition parties would support him at the polls. Has Two Years De Gaulle still has two years In office and is expected to re main until the last moment be fore submitting his post to elections, which it is antici pated will be late in 19B5. But the opposition parties re alize that they must begin now to build the image of a strong opponent to answer De Gaulle's own question, "If I go, who would take my place?" The image of Deferre is al ready a good one: Fine resist ance record in World War II, successful attorney, a good po litical record that kept him big new apartment buildings, aloof from the antics of the Fourth Republic, fine adminis trator and good television per sonality. Deferre was born in the He rauld department and was edu cated at Nimes. After a few years in colonial Africa he be came an attorney in Marseilles. Heads Underground During the war he directed the "Brutus" underground net work. De Gaulle's keen eye picked him out and Deferre was named to the No. 2 post in the Overseas Territories Minis try in 1945. He also became a member of the constituent as sembly and an important voice in the Socialist party. He became merchant marine minister in 1950 but, above all, his chosen work was running the city of Marseilles as may or. It was here that his quali ties as an administrator became really apparent. . In 1953 the port city, second only to Paris in size, was dying, economically poor and riddled with graft. Deferre, af ter 10 years, has turned it into a flourishing modern city with big new apartment buildings, many schools and no corrup tion. He was even able, when the French poured out of Al geria last year, to assimilate 100,000 of them into the area. One of Deferre's interests is directing the daily newspaper Le Provencal, and despite his J ... J'T! 1imi mm r GASTON DEFERRE May Oppose Charles de Gaulle long day's involvement in city and state affairs, he still calls frequent editorial conferences and even works as a reporter or editor at times. Distinguished Looking Man For 19 years Defferre has liv ed his life at a pace that aston ishes most citizens in Marseilles. He does not resemble the aver age southern Frenchman but is a tall, distinguished-looking man with piercing eyes and white, thinning hair. His dress is con servative British style. He is one of the best cus tomers on the airlines from Mar seilles to Paris, where he visits weekly and where, in the Na tional Assembly, his remarks are listened to with great atten tion. His home, where he lives with his wife overlooking the Mar seilles shipping lanes, does not see much of him. The couple have no children. He rises early, reads the Mar seilles and Paris newspapers and drives his black Peugeot car to the mayor's office to spend the morning working for the 900,000 inhabitants of his city. Afternoons and evenings are di vided between his work for his newspaper and the National As sembly. Keeps Himself Informed Strictly brought up as a Prot estant, Defferre is serious, even severe, but likes to keep himslf informd on the nation's literary and artistic life, the theater and the movies. Defferre, despite his innocent disclaimers, looks like a candi date and has been making more and more attacks on De Gaulle's policies. On the French principle that no one could be a serious contender without having visited the world's capitals, Defferre fits that picture, too. He has already been to Moscow and talked with Soviet Premier Ni kita Khrushchev. He had plan ned a Washington visit before the death of President Kennedy. Ways To Reduce Danger Of Fire Hazards Noted CORVALLIS-Ways to reduce Christmas fire hazards and make it a "safe Christmas" have been outlined by Charles R. Ross, Oregon State Univer sity extension forestry special ist. One of the most important steps is obtaining a fresh-cut Christmas tree and keeping it fresh, Ross emphasized. Mount the tree in water and make sure it has all the water it needs, he said. Be sure the tree is well sup ported and placed away from fireplaces, radiators, television sets and other sources of heat, he continued. Standing the tree in plain wa ter is as good or better than any chemical fire retardants tested to date, the specialist noted. A fresh cut on a slant, about one inch from the butt end, will increase the tree's wa ter intake. Bad Combination The new metal and plastic trees have their fire dangers too, Ross pointed out. Metal trees and strings of colored lights are a bad combination. The state fire marshall recom mends indirect lighting, such as a spotlight, for metal trees. If choosing a plastic tree, make sure the plastic is of the slow burning type and a nonconduc tor of electricity, he added. If using a flocked Christmas tree, Ross urges checking it to make sure the flocking has been properly treated to make it flameproof. Without such treat ment, flocking could be more dangerous than a plain green tree. The specialist also cautioned against using open-flame can dies on or near the tree where there is a chance for the flame to touch off the tree or presents. In lighting the tree, use only electric lighting sets that bear the UL (Underwriters Labora tories) label and do not plug too many cords into one outlet. Place the lights on the tree or other decorated greens so that bulbs will not rest against1 surrounding foilage or other ma leave the house or retire for i tcrial, Ross stressed. Never leave the house or retire for the evening without turning off all lighting. Tongue Point Seen As Indian School WASHINGTON (UPI) - Sen. Wayne Morse, D-Ore., said Fri day the old Tongue Point Naval Base near Astoria, Ore., would be used for a Bureau of Indian Affairs vocational educational school f o r Indian students of high school age. Morse said conversion cost was estimated at $5 million with an operating budget of $1.5 to $1.7 million. He said Interior Secretary Stewart Udall has approved the plans and was sending a re quest for funds to the Senate and House Appropriations Com mittees. Morse said the students would come primarily from the Paci fic Northwest. The proposed school would house 1 ,000 stu j dents and about 1R5 faculty ! members and supporting staff. IT'S A SMALL WONDER!
