MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 196J A 5 STAR GAZER0 'XJlCZtC WEST Weather Bureau Call Ignored by Sandman WASHINGTON (UPD-Many people have told me that when they wake up in the wee hours they often start to worry about something and have trouble getting back to sleep. I dare say, however, that very few ever contracted in somnia from worrying about the taxidermy business, as I did a night or two ago. I fell out of the arms of Morpheus about 3 a.m. and, as is my custom, got out of bed and called the weather bureau. I find that listening to a record ed weather forecast will drift me back to dreamland faster than a glass of warm milk. Only C... time it didn't work. When I returned to my pillow and tried to re-establish con tact with the sandman, it sud denly occurred to me that many years had gone by since I last saw a stuffed owl. Shaken Up A thought like that can really shake you up. Particularly at 3 a.m. In my youth, no parlor was complete without a stuffed owl. They were more plentiful than beaded curtains. Stuffed owls were to taxidermy what stuffed turkeys are to Thanksgiving. Remembering that, I sat bolt upright and said to myself, "If stuffed owls have gone out of fashion, as seems to be the case, then how are the poor taxidermists making a living?" That did it. From then until dawn's early light, I lay there drawing mental pictures of tax idermists starving in the streets because the fickle public had turned against stuffed owls. Later than day, still haunted by these nocturnal musings, I began telephoning local taxider mists to inquire if everything were all right. As usual, my fears were groundless. "Of course we're all right, silly," one of them told me. "The taxidermy business has never been better. But it was sweet of you to call." Stuff Anything "It's true that people no long er have stuffed owls in their parlors," another said, "but you should see the things they put in their recreation rooms. "More Americans than ever before are frequenting field and stream, and anything they can bag, snag or flag down they fret -r: -wv It's a "Dog gone" shame that everyone won't receive a Christmas Gift selected from McGuire's Quality Crafted Home Furnishings The Mail Tribune Shop Early... I will bring to use to have mount ed. "Folks who go on hunting and fishing trips are deter mined to hang some kind of trophy, even if it's only a pe destrian." As a matter of fact, I learned that the market for stuffed owls is by no means dead. The de mand is still there, a taxider mist explained, but the supply is limited because owls are now protected by game laws. All of which made me feel a lot better. You won't catch me losing any more sleep over that. Teacher Faces Bargaining Unit RED BANK, N. J. (UPI) -History teacher Thomas M. Perry taught his senior class about the labor movement so well that he found himself fac ing their organized bargaining unit Thursday. Thomas teaches at Red Bank High School and describes him self as a "fairly tough and de manding teacher." That could be the reason the 31 members of the class showed up Thursday organized as "Unit ed Slaveworkers, Local 211." Some even carried placards which said "Boss Unfair." The students presented Thom as with a seven-point petition in cluding demands for a writters cramp break, more regard for the fact that students have other subjects, an end to ex cessive homework, a shorter term paper and more time to do it. Thomas went along with the practical lesson in labor nego tiations and sat down with the negotiating committee. After deliberating, he granted one of the demands to give stu dents more time to complete their term papers. The papers, however, will still have to be at least 5,000 words long. Edited by Sirs, Alma Denny. (Copyright bv General Feature? Corp.) Mr. H. L. This is a new, visit the children of his former marriage. Rid. H. L. This is a new start for me. I want to enjoy it fully. ei Mds. H. L. I married a widower of 60 a few weeks ago. He has three children from his former marriage and I thought I'd become part of a large warm family circle. I have no one of my own nearby. Instead, my husband informs me he's not interested in them and they are not interested in him. They seem to be lovely people. I hope I won't be blamed for this estrangement. I don't like it. Mr. II. L. I was alone for five years and needed the com panionship of my children des perately. Even though they'd been closer to their mother than to me they were all I had left and I sought them out. But they rebuffed me. Whenever I called I seemed in the way, they were just going out or their dinner guests were just arriving. They got along fine without me and vice versa. The Council: If life were just an endurance test, Mr. L., to see how much we can get along without, we'd all run up long lists of "dispensables" but short Softly Feminine Deep collar curves around your shoulders gracefully as a stole skirt falls softly. Of course you can "get along," but that's a bland neutral state. What of emotional enrichment, peaks of good feeling? Granted that your relations with your children were never exactly ardent, the new chapter you're opening now can, with the help of your sen sitive wife, include a friendly and relaxed communication with them. We suggest that Mrs. L. "play dumb" in the matter of strained relations. Assuming all is hunky-dory between the gen erations, let her invite them to visit. Her female intuition and know-how will operate in Mr. L.'s behalf to steer his well- meaning approaches to the young folks away from the shoals of intrusion, interference, and recrimination.
