(UPI) The Air Force disclosed Monday it now has 500 operational intercontinental bal listic missiles within the United States all armed with nuclear warheads and aimed at "a specific target." But it emphasized that these missiles are deterrent weapons to be used only for retaliation in the event of an enemy nu clear attack on the U.S. "They are purely defensive," stressed Col. Arthur Snowden, a spokes man for the Air Force's Ballis tic Systems Division (BSD) here. By the first of the year the number of these rockets will swell to 550, and to "well over 600" by mid-1964. All of these missiles which include Atlas, Titan and Minute man are capable of hitting and devastating any possible enemy target. Although the military and government cautiously refuse to identify "the specific target," it is commonly known to be the Soviet Union. U.S. Ahead "What was a serious race be tween the U.S. and Russia a few years ago now has turned heavily in favor of this country as far as the number of mis siles is concerned," said Snow den, who is in charge of BSD plans and policy. BDS is the headquarters man agement agency for all of the nation's ICUM's. Snowden said that Minuteman "instant ICB.M" missiles are in mass production and are being put into underground silos at the rate of one a day. He said that by the late 1960s the U.S. will have 900 operational Minuteman poised In firing position. Another leader in the space missile field, Maj. Gen. W. Aus tin Davis who is the BSD com mandertold United Press In ternational: "We are going to have a tre mendous missile force in the field in the near future. One of ! our follow-on efforts will be to (icld weapons as fast as we can build and develop them." Race Goes On But Davis pointed out that this country's big lead In the num ber of missiles does not mean an end to all aspects of the ' missile race. I The Air Force acknowledges that a new rivalry has emerged I between the world's two might iest powers. Both nations now j are waging a race to develop invincible anti-missile systems and at the same time working on missile deception techniques lor penetrating enemy defenses. Early last month Russia dis played a rocket which it said j was an anti-lCBM capable of intercepting missiles. Later in the monlh the U.S. said its i Niko-Zcus anti-missile missile I had scored its 10th successful intercept on one of our own I ICBM's in the Pacific. In addition to an anti-ICBM i systems, Davis said the U.S. must "improve Its re-entry ve hicles to give us a better capa- bility in this field." He said this : meant learning how (o increase I the capability of re-entry vc i hides lo fulfill their missions, i The re-entry vehicle is the nose cone section of Ihe ICBM i that is designed to hit an enemy i target with a nuclear warhead, i "We must try to slay ahead of any defensive system that an enemy might have," he said. Elsenhower that he seek the Republican presidential nomina tion, although he has no plans at present to run. Lodge, vice presidential nomi nee in 1960, said he had no di rect word of Eisenhower's ap peal and declined to say how he would reply to it. But there were strong indications that whatever his response, Lodge would not leave his post here until well into the new year. "I have not received any such message," he said when asked about reports that Eisenhower wanted him to return immedi ately to the United States and begin campaigning. "If I did re ceive such a message," he add ed, "I would consider it and take a good hard look at it." The 61-year old ambassador said that at present "I have no intention of running" for presi dent. He said he feels he can do the most good by continuing to serve here. Informed sources here said Lodge, who took up his post at the end of August, would not consider resigning for several months because of the critical situation in Viet Nam. He has worked closely with the new military junta, in power only six weeks, and is believed to want to stay here until South Viet Nam's effort against the Communists has im proved with the change of government.
